Chapter Nineteen
The next few days were practically hell for Katherine, Jack had resorted to glaring at her 90% of the time and ignoring her for the rest of the 10%. It was awful, for the most part David and Clara hadn't seen anything wrong with the fact that Joseph Pulitzer was her father. In their opinion they new Katherine was nothing like him and weren't going to judge. Jack on the other hand has his own ideas, he couldn't see past the fact that Katherine was related to the man who was part of the problem Jack had grew up on the streets. Katherine hated being at odds with him, she'd just begun to really fall for him.
"Hey Kath do you want to come help me and Clara?" David asked crouching next to her in the sand. She'd currently been starring expressionlessly off into the distance looking rather lost.
"Wha-? Oh, yea, sure." Katherine said getting to her feet and brushing away the endless sand. For the last two weeks or so David and Clara had been working non stop at coming up with a sort of signal they could use out of the two things they had: a half empty can of shaving cream and gallon of plane fuel they'd managed to find on the shore.
David put his hand on her shoulder as they walked back over to Clara emerged in a series of wires and strings. David put out a sort of brotherly glow to him that helped make Katherine feel a bit better, she could hardly believe she'd once had a crush on David. It seemed every sense Crutchie had died everything had started changing so fast, she'd gotten close to Jack both emotionally and physically... and they'd found so many things from the plane wreck that had washed up after so many storm, plus Katherine had seen Clara and David holding hands that morning. It seemed they'd all changed into completely different people on that wretched island.
"Katherine you doing okay?" Clara asked as she sat down next to her. Clara's blonde hair was tied up in a pony tail with a piece of string and a few loose strands blew into her blue eyes.
"Yea." She lied inspecting the mess before her. "So... what are you guys trying to do?"
"Well," Clara said holding up part of a wire. "We were thinking that we need some sort of signal that could catch the attention of a plane or boat that happened to come by. Obviously we would use either the gas or the can considering if we got it just right we could get it to explode, the only problem is the explosion wouldn't be big enough from the ground, we need something to launch it into the air." She said making a motion like she was throwing a baseball.
"The only problem." David said "Is that we'd have to time it perfectly to get it to explode at just the right time. If it went off to soon it could hurt us, but if it didn't go off fast enough our efforts would be worthless." He said rubbing the sides of his head with his fingers.
Katherine had never been good at Science or Math, it had never interested her enough to want to know more then just the basics. In her opinion she was a better writer than anything, ask her to write an essay on a book? No problem. But ask her to do an equation? Forget it.
"So basically were sitting around wishing we could actually accomplish something." Clara said sounding exasperated.
"Hey that's better than nothing." Katherine pointed out.
"I guess so. Where's Jack?" Clara asked changing the subject.
Katherine shrugged "I don't know, probably reeking havoc somewhere."
"Have you guys talked yet?" She asked.
"No." Sighed Katherine. "I don't think there's any way to go back to how it was."
"That's not true." David cut in leaning back on his hands. "He just needs to blow off some steam, give him some time."
Katherine snorted not seeing how that was possible, after all it was her father that had made his life hell. Why should he ever forgive her? She cursed herself for letting him find out, she knew he shouldn't have found out!
"I feel so stupid." Katherine said burying her face in her hands.
"Don't feel that way Kath." Clara said patting her back comfortingly.
"No Clara, I'm not kidding. I am so stupid! I should of kept my mouth shut!" She said sharply.
"To be honest Katherine," David said. "We all would I found out eventually, we were gonna get off this island and we all would have known when we saw the daughter of the richest a man in New York finally found after being lost at sea!" He said mimicking a news reporters voice.
Katherine hugged her legs and rocked back and forth feeling her chest contract. No matter what David or Clara said she still couldn't get over the fact she had let her secrete spill. Now it was her fault Jack wouldn't talk to her, or hold her, or kiss her, or push her up against a tree...
Thoes memories burned brightly in her mind as she sat there trying to convince herself everything was going to be okay. It didn't work.
