Chapter Four

Katherine had never thought about dying, it wasn't necessarily something she liked to dwell on. Sure she'd had one or two deep conversations with her mother about life after death but mostly she liked to focus on the present. It wasn't until she had the sensation that every bone in her body was being crushed did she actually give the after life thought, she thought about her baby brother that had died in a car accent at just 3 years old, she thought about her grandpa and how he had died fighting for the country. She thought about her old dog Toby and how he had died a few months ago. Was she finally going to say hello to them after such a long time? Was she finally going to give her little brother a piggy back ride? The though almost calmed her growing panic as she felt her body being tossed around. It didn't hurt anymore, she was going to die and it didn't seem like such a bad idea.

"Katherine!" She heard someone scream her name. The voice was familiar and she wondered if it was her grandpa. "Jack grab her we have to get out of here!"

Katherine was starting to come back around and the pain in her body was becoming more prominent. She felt strong arms wrap themselves around her body and hoist her up like she didn't weight anything at all, she could feel someone's hot breath against her neck and it somehow made the pain ebb away.

"If we don't get out now we're all going to drown." A frantic voice said and Katherine could hear the rushing of water somewhere. She pried her eyes open and saw nothing but blue, a deep blue that looked like the ocean. It was calm and warm and inviting, it made Katherine want to cry it was so perfect. She blinked then realized she was looking into someone's eyes, someone's gorgeous eyes.

"Jack focus, we need to get her and Crutchie out of here." The voice said again and she realized it was David who was speaking.

Jacks arms tightened around her and she felt her head start to swim again as he started to climb his way up something. Before she knew it her vision was tunneling and she had blacked out again.

"Wake up Katherine! Wake up youse gotta to help me out here!" She heard a different voice calling to her. The voice was frantic and full of worry and she felt herself snap out of the darkness. The first thing she noticed was that she was soaking wet, the next thing she noticed was she was pressed against someone. Her head throbbed and something hard was being pushed into her back and it made her uncomfortable.

"Wake up!" The voice said sternly and Katherine's gaze focused on that miraculous blue again. She noticed sooner than last time who it was and sat up feeling panicked. Her head screamed in protest as she took in the horrific scene around her. Piles of debris littered the water around them ignited with flames, she spotted the small plane about a hundred yards away one half on fire and the other half emerged in water. Her eyes widened in fear as she heard screams from inside the plane, there was people still in there! Jack seemed to know what she was going to do before she did it because he grabbed her waist and held her against his chest.

"There's nothing ya can do." He said his voice still frantic. She struggled against him ignoring her pounding head as she watched the plain sink faster into the water putting out the nasty flames.

"But there's people still in there!" She said desperately tears filling her eyes. She watched in horror as the plain vanished under the surf leaving nothing behind except piles of burning debris. "W-what about David!" She asked suddenly realizing her friend could be dead.

"He's over there with Crutchie." Jack said his voice shaking. Katherine turned and saw two people huddled on a small yellow raft she burst into tears at the sight of there small body's against the horizon. "Ya gotta help me get us over there, you ain't the lightest person ever." Jack said moving the water back with one hand and keeping the other firmly around her waist.

Katherine sniffed but had no other choice but to help him paddle towards the small raft that David must of somehow gotten afloat. Her heart was pounding so hard she feared it might burst, she felt like she was going to pass out again as she struggled to suck in enough breath.

"Your hyperventilating, calm down." Jack ordered noticing her labored breathing. Katherine knew he was right and yet she had no power over her body anymore, she felt physically useless. It seemed like hours of Katherine fighting to stay conscious but finally they made it to the yellow raft.

"Oh thank goodness you guys are okay." David said his voice slightly hysterical as Jack helped Katherine into the raft. Crutchie was curled up in a ball in one corner and appeared to be sleeping which Katherine took as a bad sign.

"Crutch! Is he okay?" Jack said as he got in his voice raised with worry.

"He passed out when I got him in here, he's still b-breathing so I'm p-praying he's okay." David said his voice shaking. Katherine maneuvered her body so she wasn't completely pressed against Jack, the raft was obviously not meant for four people. Already she could see the water starting to spill into the raft from all the weight and knew it was only a matter of time before before it would sink. She tried to calm her breathing as Jack and David leaned over to inspect Crutchie, she was going into shock. What had just happened? Had there plane really just crashed? What about all those poor people? Katherine heart broke as she thought about the young couple with the baby and the sleeping elderly couple, what a tragedy.

She pressed a hand against her temple and pulled it away with blood on her hands, that didn't look good. She looked down at her white paint stained blouse and tattered sweats. Her shirt was ridiculously see through from the water, she blushed and covered herself up hoping no one had notice. She noticed Jack had a deep gash on his upper fore arm and it dripped with blood making the bottom of the raft turn a nasty shade of pink. Other than that he seemed to be fine, David on the other hand had half his shirt ripped away and she could tell by the was he was holding his side that he might of busted a few ribs. She couldn't see Crutchie from where she was but she prayed that he he was okay too. The last thing that guy needed was to be injured again.

Katherine let her eyes scan the scene of the crash and it broke her heart again, the full reality of the situation was beginning to weigh down on her. They were stuck out at sea with nothing, no food, no water, and with a raft that was about to sink.

She was fairly certain they were all going to die.
