Chapter Five
Being on a sinking raft with three other boys wasn't very fun in Katherine's opinion. In just the first hour or so Katherine was certain she was going to go insane. First of all there wasn't much room so she was constantly touching someone and Katherine got claustrophobic very easy. Second of all Jack and David couldn't stop arguing about why the plane had crashed.
"It was not a terrorist attack Jack! Did you feel how the plane had shuttered? It was an engine failure." David said smartly.
"I'm pretty sure I saw a Russian missile sink when we was swimin' away." Jack said pressing his wadded up shirt to his bleeding arm. Katherine tried not to stare but it was hard when his solid bare chest was centimeters away from her face.
"Who's the one with the degree in law?" David asked pulling his arm awkwardly out from under Katherine.
"Who's the one with the better imagination?" Jack mocked in the same bossy tone.
Katherine rolled her eyes but opted to interfere with there argument, Crutchie had finally woken up a while ago and just sat there listening to their conversation with the look of amusement on his face. He'd been surprised to learn the plane had crashed but had generally had a good attitude about it. Out of all of them Crutchie was the least wounded which made everyone very relieved.
Katherine felt her back scream in protest from her position so she tried moving herself so she would be on top of Jack instead of having him on top of her but that just put her in David's lap and her feet in Crutchies face.
"Sorry." She apologized blushing like crazy.
"No your fine, Jacks probably been crushing you for the last hour. Sorry about that." David apologized.
"Best hour of my life." Jack muttered as she shifted out of David's lap and back down next to Jack. She shot him a glare and tried moving again but it made the raft tip slightly and more water rushed over the side.
"Careful, careful!" David said steading her. "If we tip were dead."
"If I lay next to him any longer then I'm going to go crazy." Katherine shot at
Jack.
"No one said youse gotta lay next ta me doll face. You could lay on me if that would make ya feel any better." Jack said smirking at her.
"Not now Jack." David said tying to move but he had to stop and clutch his ribs in pain.
"That might actually work." Crutchie said suddenly. Everyone turned to looked at him there eyebrows raised. "Not to put Kathy in a tough position or anything but since she's the lighter one of all of us she should go on top."
His logic did make sense Katherine just didn't want to admit it.
Crutchie shrugged. "Maybe if Jack stays where he is and Katherine moves so David can lay down where she was then I can put my feet between you guys and Kath can lay on top."
"That's a good idea Crutch, why didn't I think of that?" David asked looking a little surprised. Crutchie just smiled and shrugged his shoulders.
"Must be all dis sea water." He said grinning. They all laughed and set to work at maneuvering themselves, Katherine reluctantly laid on Jacks chest as David slowly lowered himself to the spot Katherine had been in.
"Ya know I really like that shirt on you. It's very flattering." Jack said smirking down at her his eyes wandering to her see through shirt.
"Shut up." Katherine all but hissed and attempted to cover her chest from his prying eyes. For once in her life she was glad she was wearing a black bra or the situation would of been a whole lot worse.
"Okay Katherine now you can lay across." David said still clutching his ribs.
"Or you could stay here if you'd like." Jack said not bothering to hide the fact that he was still starring at her. Katherine clenched her jaw and got off him and lowered herself so she was sitting on Crutchies legs, her legs were across David's chests and stuck a little out of the boat. She laid down so her back was against Jacks chest, it was the most comfortable position she'd been in and instantly her back muscles relaxed. "Mmmm this works too." Jack said grinning at her one of his hands coming up to grab her waist.
"Touch me and you die." She said her voice so low only Jack heard it. He grinded his teeth in response but pulled his hand away leaving her skin tingling from his touch. His gorgeous blue eyes were steady against her brown ones, after a moment she had too look away.
They were all silent for a few minutes just listening to the swish of the water against the raft. It was a peaceful sound that made Katherine want to fall asleep, her head had stopped bleeding a while ago but her head was still sore where she had smacked it against something. Her whole body needed to sleep but she was to terrified to do so. What if a storm came while she was a sleep and she drowned? What if sharks came and tore a hole in there raft? She knew these things were not highly likely at the moment but she still worried. Perhaps the real thing she was worried about was the boy her head was laying on. She barely knew him but already she knew what kind of a person he was, she figured it was stupid to think like that but it still worried her. She was very aware of his chest moving up and down with every breath and she constantly found herself glancing over at him, she hoped he wouldn't notice. He was very attractive... but that shouldn't be a reason she couldn't stop looking at him. His wet black hair was messy and stuck to his forehead but somehow he made it look good, his jaw was so ridiculously defined Katherine could of ran her finger across it and gotten cut. Of course that was a bit of an exaggeration but still... She pushed all of those thoughts away when she remembered what he'd been suggesting to her, why did all hot guys have to be jerks? She thought about how David had been kind enough to talk to her in the plane and had had the decency to respect her. David was a good guy, he was smart like Katherine, and he was kind of cute in a nerdy kind of way. He reminded Katherine of her childhood crush Ross Geller from the TV show Friends, he seemed so much like him it was crazy, he even looked like him. Maybe that was why Katherine had quickly become friends with him, or maybe it was because he was just such a good guy in general.
Katherine's head span and she pushed both David and Jack away from her mind, she didn't have time to be worried about boys. She needed to be worried about starving to death or dehydration, something besides what was currently clouding her mind. Katherine could hear David and Crutchies snores but she knew Jack was still awake. She sat up careful not to wake David up.
"Easy there Kathy." Jack said smirking at her, one hand was against her back steading her against him.
"My name is Katherine not Kathy." She retorted sounding like a five year old. She smacked his hand away from her back and crossed her arms.
"Awe is someone feeling a bit down? Don't worry, I could feel you up... if you'd like." He said suggestively.
Katherine would of slapped him if she'd had the strength, instead she settled on glaring at him.
"You are the most..." she struggled for the right words. "...impossible boy I have ever met!"
Jack only put a hand behind his head and laughed at her, the sound infuriated her. Who did he think he was?
"Ya know, your pretty hot when ya get mad." He said his eyes appraising her. "I swear I've seen youse before... where was it?"
Katherine was 99.9% sure she'd never met Jack before today, so how could he know her? Then again she was the daughter of the richest man in New York so maybe he'd seen her in a magazine or something. That thought made her sick to her stomach and she desperately hoped he never found out who her dad was. The last thing she needed from the boys was to be labeled as a spoiled brat.
"What did you say your last name was again? Oh yea, Plumber ain't it?" He asked. Katherine blinked then suddenly remembered lying about her last name.
"Wha- oh yea Plumber, defiantly." She said then grimaced at how bad of an actor she was.
"That name would-"
But what ever he was going to say Katherine cut him if with a firm hand to his chest. Something had caught her eye... She'd seen something in the distant, something that was very different from the open water.
"Jack..." She said turning her eyes to him her heart racing in her chest. Jacks eyes weren't on the spot in the distant, and they weren't even looking into Katherine's. His gaze was fixed on her hand against his bare chest a small smile playing on his lips. "Jack." Katherine said again and he finally looked up at her his inviting blue eyes meeting hers.
"I see land."
