Chapter 9
***YAY! This chapter was a lot of fun! There are two songs, one for Jay's POV, and one for Nya's. I super hate Jay's song, so it only has one verse in the actual story! Also, I picked the clean lyrics to omit that one curse word (I know, I know, I am a stickler), but it's super easy to find the regular version, if you'd rather listen to that!***
***(Jay's POV; song for his POV: "Señorita" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello)***
Nya inhales. "Okay, time for Spanish tutoring. I'm pretty sure we're meeting at the library." She smiles up at me, but I can see her eyes are troubled.
"What's wrong?" I ask. She's been off since Lloyd pulled her away to talk this afternoon.
"While we were outside the cafeteria, Lloyd and I overheard something," she frowns. "Can you do some surveillance this afternoon? I'll get Lloyd to cover for us with Wu."
I nod emphatically. "Sure." I can't believe she actually wants to spend time with me! "But – what exactly did you overhear?"
"Well, it looked like Chamille and Ha – "
"Do not tell me you are my new student," says a deep voice with a Spanish accent.
We both turn to see a muscular Latino teenager with curly black waves. His eyes, though, bother me – they look Nya up and down like she's some item for sale at a store. I take a step closer to her.
"I assume you're my Spanish tutor?" she smiles. She raises her brows, obviously aware of him checking her out.
"That would be me. I am Nadakhan," he introduces himself. "However, my friends call me Captain. It's a little easier to say."
"Why would they call you that?" Nya asks.
He shrugs. "I like ships. May I ask what your name is?"
"Sure, it's Nya," she replies.
He shakes his head. "No, I think not. You look like a...a...Dilara. Yes, that's perfect for you. Now, Dilara, where would you like to sit?"
"Um, well, it'll have to be a table that can fit at least three." She motions to me. "My boyfriend, Jay, is accompanying me."
Nadakhan suddenly notices my presence. "Oh, forgive my rudeness. I will always be glad to meet a suitor of Dilara." He gives me a bow. "But be forewarned, you may not want to watch while I charm her heart."
Nya rolls her eyes. "No one will be charming anything right now. I just need a Spanish lesson."
Her tutor laughs. "I can see why you like her! Ah, let's sit now, shall we?"
The three of us choose a table. While Nya and Nadakhan study basic Spanish vocabulary, I keep an eye on the guy. There's something...off...about him. And I'm not just thinking that because I'm jealous.
Oh, who am I kidding? I watch as Nya tips her head back and laughs at something he says. How can I compare to muscular Latino men?
The chords of a new song are strumming in my head, and I don't like it very much.
"I love it when you call me 'Señorita'.
I wish I could pretend I didn't need ya,
But every touch is ooh, la, la, la.
It's true, la, la, la.
Ooh, I should be running.
Ooh, you keep me coming for ya."
I shudder. Okay, enough of that. Instead, I'll write down everything I currently know about the disappearing elemental masters.
The master of sound was kidnapped just today. I'm pretty sure Wu mentioned that the masters of metal and ash had vanished, too. There's probably more, but I'll have to wait until I get back to the monastery to ask about them.
The Sons of Garmadon are probably responsible for the kidnappings. I don't know much about them, but I'm pretty sure they're a biker gang. And I think they meet for Boba tea at a local bar sometimes. I should get the guys to check that out.
Somehow, powers are being stolen. I don't know how Wu knows that, though. Maybe he knows some sort of a plant in the gang? Or someone who'd be willing to trade for secrets? Nya's pretty good with bargains. Then again, so is the guy who taught her...
Ronin! I bet if anyone knows about an underground power stealing operation, it's him! He probably tipped Wu off. And he wouldn't get his hands dirty without a proper price. That's why Wu doesn't have any more information. Nya and I will have to make plans to visit him.
Chen's staff must've been recreated somehow. But Clouse is stuck in the Cursed Realm, so he couldn't re-enchant it. How was this new staff made?
And Nya seems to think Chamille is somehow involved with everything. I wonder what she overheard.
As I think of Nya, I look over to notice she's gone. I jolt upward when I realize Nadakhan's not here, either. Stupid me! I was off in my head. What has Nadakhan done now?
I quickly begin a search of the library, but come up short. I proceed to the hallway, but stop short when I see what's ensuing.
Nadakhan is...dancing with Nya?
"I don't want to dance with you," she complains, jerking out of his arms.
He pulls her back. "Of course, you do."
Stumbling forward, she trips over his feet. "I think I know what I want. Now let me go."
"You have no rhythm," he chuckles, still holding her hands captive.
My legs finally work again. "Yes, she does," I argue, marching right over to where they are. "She's just not dancing with the right guy."
Nadakhan shoots me a surprised look. "Hello, suitor of Dilara. I'm glad you're finally joining us. You were so in your head earlier, I thought you'd never come out." He grins wickedly. "Surprised to see me winning her over?"
Nya makes a disgusted sound. "Are you kidding me? You are not winning me over. And you're about two seconds from getting kicked where the sun doesn't shine, so push off." She takes this opportunity to slip out of his grasp. I'm surprised she hadn't shot water up Nadakhan's nose yet, but I guess Sensei has a reason for keeping our powers secret.
"I love your fire," her tutor compliments her.
"That's the last straw!" she growls, stomping her foot. "Today's Spanish lesson is over, and I am not meeting with you again!"
He rolls his eyes. "Good luck finding another tutor to take you on at this point."
"I don't care if I do!" she retorts, grabbing my hand. "Let's go, Jay."
I nod, mentally reminding myself to return for her notes and backpack later. She pulls me through the hall, down a set of stairs, and out the door.
Nya releases a huge breath as soon as we get outside. Then, out of nowhere, she says, "Dance with me."
"What?" I ask, confused.
"Dance with me," she repeats. "I am fed up with that guy, and I don't want to remember my first dance as the moment some stupid flirt decided I would be fun to hit on. If you dance with me, then I can...replace that memory."
I nod shakily. "Um, do you want to go somewhere more private? We're in front of the school right now, and as you can see, everything's just now letting out."
She groans and tugs me across the yard. A few minutes later, we reach a secluded grove of trees.
"Okay, not everybody's watching. Teach me to dance."
I gulp. "All right. Well..."

Jay's about to set us in motion, but I stop him.
"Wait. We should play some music. I want my first dance to have some sort of music." I also want an extra-large coffee with three shots of espresso and double whipped cream. I am done with boy drama. I could totally go for a tub of rocky road, and I hate sweet food.
"All right," Jay says. "What song would you like to listen to?"
"Whatever's good for slow dancing. I've never been to a dance."
He looks surprised, then realization washes over his face. "Kai wouldn't let you."
I nod.
After Jay taps a few buttons on his BorgPod and connects it to a small speaker (the guy must really love music), I hear a slow guitar intro. He sets his device down and slowly joins me.
"Okay, it's really simple. Just put your hands on my shoulders." He gently takes both my hands, engulfing my cold with his soft warmth. I shiver, almost imperceptibly, at the feeling.
He moves his gaze to my eyes as he places my hands in the correct position.
"Okay, now I'll put mine on your hips," he mutters, more to himself than to me.
Gently, he rests his hands on me.
"All right," he says quietly. "Now, just follow my lead." He takes a measured step forward, and I step back in response.
"Forever can never be long enough for me
To feel like I've had long enough with you.
Forget the world now, we won't let them see.
But there's one thing left to do.
Now that the weight has lifted,
Love has surely shifted my way."
I'm mesmerized by his blue eyes on mine. I never realized how deep they are, or how they reveal every emotion of his heart. I remember something my mom used to tell me: "The eyes are the window to the soul." I feel compelled to lean a little closer, to find out what else they're saying...
I trip a little over his feet, but he catches me.
"Sorry," I blush.
"It's okay," he smiles. "You're doing really great. Just don't think about what you're doing." He swallows. "Focus on me."
"Marry me,
Today and every day.
Marry me,
If I ever get the nerve to say 'hello' in this café.
Say you will,
Mmm-hmm,
Say you will,
Mmm-hmm.
Together can never be close enough for me
To feel like I am close enough to you.
You wear white, and I'll wear out the words 'I love you'
And 'you're beautiful'."
I feel something stir inside of me that I've never felt for anyone else. I just have this overwhelming urge to stay right here with Jay. Where I was so confused earlier, all I know is clarity now. I'm meant to be right here, in the arms of...my fake boyfriend?
But...what if that changes? What if I don't want him to stay fake? I never thought about that. I never imagined actually falling in love with Jay. I toyed with the idea of being something more with him last night, but until now...
What am I thinking? I can't be in love with Jay. We've spent barely any time together. I –
Something in his eyes bars me from further thought. I see the sweetest, most caring look I've ever received. I feel us click, somehow.
"Now that the wait is over
And love has finally shown her my way.
Marry me,
Today and every day.
Marry me,
If I ever get the nerve to say 'hello' in this café.
Say you will,
Mmm-hmm.
Say you will,
Mmm-hmm."
"Nya?" he whispers.
"Yeah?" I breathlessly reply.
"You're amazing."
I chuckle, which is hard to do without any air in your lungs. "I think you are, too."
His smile is stellar. "You think?"
"I do."
"Promise me
You'll always be
Happy by my side.
I promise to
Sing to you
When all the music dies.
And marry me,
Today and every day.
Marry me,
If I ever get the nerve to say 'hello' in this café.
Say you will,
Mmm-hmm.
Say you will,
Mmm-hmm.
Marry me,
Hmm-mmm."
