Chapter 26: How Could You?
The worst thing about betrayal is that you never know when it hits you. It could be at midnight, while you're trying to get some sleep, or when you're in school, trying to study so you don't fail in life. You'll just be going on with your day happily, and then it will hit you in the face faster than you can even react. And boy, oh boy, does the outcome sting.
Sometimes, it will come from a person who you thought you could trust. A person who acted like they cared about you, but ended up turning their backs on you and hurting you where it hurts the most. And sometimes, you just can't believe it. You think it's a horrible dream and that you will just wake up to the sound of your alarm shrieking in your ear.
But that's not always the case. Sometimes, you have to deal with the situation face to face. Whether you like it or not. You can't always run away from your problems. It just never works out, no matter how much you want it to.
Eventually, you have to grow a pair and deal with the situation. And it's not always with someone there to hold your hand. You have to man up, stand tall and strong, and go deal with the betrayal itself. Even if it makes you want to strangle someone.
My eyes couldn't believe what I saw there. Sophia kissing another man was something I never imagined. It wasn't on the lips, but she was still kissing another guy. I just couldn't process it at the moment. I felt so crushed because I had put my full trust in Sophia.
I thought I could trust her enough to stay faithful to me and never let me down. She just took that trust and stomped on it like it was a piece of trash. I have had my trust broken several times in my life. They were all people I thought I could trust. I just never knew Sophia would be one of those people.
Eventually, I just storm off to the library, where I just continue to read my Spanish notes. I have my Spanish final coming up and I didn't even start to study yet. I am not going to fail. As I was studying, Pete comes up to me. "Buenos dias, dude. How is studying coming along?" he asks.
"So far, I'm okay. I'm just trying not to fail," I say without looking up from my notes. Pete chuckles.
"Your face says otherwise, bro. You look like you're looking at your horrible school pictures from first grade," Pete says. I sigh.
"Trust me, you don't want to know," I say, flipping a page.
Pete pulls up a chair and sits down. "Spill. I just wish I had popcorn," Pete says. I look at him with an annoyed look on my face. Pete smirks at me.
"Remind me again why I'm friends with you?" I ask. Pete smirks.
"You love me, bro. Admit it," he says. I roll my eyes. I then proceed to tell the whole story of how I was going to go apologize to Sophia, but ended up finding her cheating. When I am done, Pete looks at me with a blank look on his face.
"Uh-uh. No. Not happening," he says, shaking his head.
"What the hell are you talking about?" I ask, confused.
"Ray, I refuse to believe any of this crap that you are spewing out of your mouth. You may be my best friend, but I don't find any of this believable," he says.
"You don't trust me?" I ask.
"No. Of course I trust you. But I don't believe that Sophia would ever, and I mean ever, cheat on you. Let alone consider it," Pete says.
"Did you not hear a word I just said? I saw her kissing another guy on the cheek. I'm not blind. My eyes saw what they didn't want to see," I say defiantly. Pete looks irritated.
"I get that. But I don't think that guy is romantically involved with her any way. Are you sure that you're not high?" Pete asks. I roll my eyes and nod.
"Well, I find it really hard to believe that Sophia would ever cheat on you in any way, intentionally," Pete says.
"Dude. Have you met Sophia? She's the kind of person who will just give you hugs and go. She told me that she will never kiss anyone on the cheek unless she is romantically involved with them," I say. Pete looks like he has run out of options.
"If you say so. I really can't convince you anyway. You're way too stubborn for your own good," Pete says. I shake my head and continue to study for finals.
Eventually, I have to go to science. And I share it with Sophia. What a great way to start my day! Having to face my cheating girlfriend first thing in the morning! This is going to be fun!
I drag myself into science, and I find Sophia chatting with Rosemary. She notices my entrance and walks towards me. "Good morning, Ray! How's life?" Sophia asks. She's basically acting like nothing happened. It makes me even more angry.
She just can't let go of it that easily. But I try my best not to let my anger get the best of me. I don't even look her in the eye. I can't look at her the same anymore ever. I just walk past her without saying a word and sit in my lab seat.
Sophia looks at me with a confused look on her face. She just walks back and continues to talk to Rosemary. After going through AP chemistry with no conversation between Sophia and me, I proceed with my school day. One period at a time, each lasting longer than I can manage.
Eventually, during lunch, as I'm sorting through my math notes, Sophia comes up to me. "Ray? Are you okay? You seemed a little off today," Sophia says. I avoid eye contact with her and continue sorting through my notes.
"I'm fine, Sophia," I say bitterly.
Sophia still looks really confused. She's not used to the really bitter behavior from me. "If you need some more space, then I'll be happy to give it to you. Just tell me," she says. "Or just not talk to me at all forever. I'd prefer that," I say. Sophia looks confused at first, then irritated.
"Ray, what's going on? You've been so nasty lately and I don't know what's happening with you. And you're not even doing this with a reason. I don't know if it's what I said or what I've done," Sophia says. I close my math notebook and look her straight in the eye.
"There's a reason why I'm being like this. And it's because of what you did," I say. Sophia looks startled.
"Well, what did I do wrong? Tell me," Sophia demands.
"My mom always told me cheaters are always going to be cheaters no matter what. That's how you are always going to be, Sophia. You can't change in any way," I say.
Sophia looks stunned. "Cheater? I didn't cheat on you. I've always been faithful, and I always will. You're the only guy in my life that I care so deeply about," Sophia says. I've had it with her lies now. She's always been so honest with me.
But this time, she's lying to me and herself. And it's making me furious. "My eyes don't lie, Sophia! I saw what you were doing with that guy this morning! Didn't you think that I would have caught you? Did you really think that you could get away with it? Well, you were wrong," I say angrily.
Sophia looks irritated. "Ray, what the hell are you talking about? I wasn't doing anything much this morning! What are you even saying?" she says.
"Don't lie to me. I saw you with your lips on that guy's cheek. I saw how he kissed you on the cheek and you didn't do anything to stop him! You cheated on me, Sophia! You're a liar and a cheater! And you have to face it, Sophia!" I yell.
Sophia looks hurt, but has the look that says, "hear me out." "Ray, I can explain. Let me explain," she says. I put my hand up to silence her.
"Don't bother. I don't want to hear it, Sophia. Have a good time with that guy," I say, packing up my things and storming off.
I just can't deal with any more lies and garbage. It's too much for me. But something I didn't realize is that things can lie to you all the time. It can be anything and everything. Your friends, your parents. Even the own windows to your soul.

Well, this chapter was.... emotional, to say the least. We can tell that Ray isn't happy at all in this chapter. (Frankly, I'm not too happy either as this was NOT a fun chapter to write.) Do you think Sophia's lying, or is she telling the truth? Let me know in the comments.
Hello hello everyone! How are you all? Christmas is right around the corner! Are you all excited? I am, even though I don't celebrate. I love the holidays. If you celebrate, what are your plans for Christmas this year? Let me know.
Also, if you didn't see the chapter, I FINALLY chose a cast for the three main characters! Exciting, right? Yeah, it took a while. But I was finally happy with my choices. (Fun fact: Ray's face claim was the hardest for me to pick out, and Victoria's was the easiest.) What do you guys think of the cast? Let me know. That's pretty much it. Hope you guys enjoyed this chapter!
As always, please vote/comment/share/message/follow if you guys like my work. See you all next Sunday! Have a great week!
Love you guys,
S.V.T.S.
