Chapter 12: Back it Up

I wake up the next morning to my brother yelling at me. "Soph, you may want to get up. It's 6:45," he calls. 6:45? Oh fudge. I'm going to be late for school.

I rip the covers off of my body and sprint to the bathroom. I grab my toothbrush, squirt some toothpaste on, and start assaulting my teeth with it. I brush and brush vigorously, until my arms are too tired to carry on. I spit in the sink, throw water in my mouth, spit it out, and run to the kitchen to see my mom frying up grilled cheese sandwiches on the stove.

"You made it, Sophia." my mom says while putting a sandwich on a plate. I grab my bottle of hot sauce and start pouring a big puddle.

I love spicy things. I don't know why.

After inhaling my sandwich and choking down a glass of milk, I run to the bathroom and freshen up. I always bathe in the morning, because I feel a lot better. I run out of the bathroom, throw on something random, and torture my scalp with a comb. When I'm done, I look at the clock, and it's 7:42. Perfect timing. I get into my car, and off I go to school. I know I said my house is a walking distance from the school, but I'm lazy. Aren't we all?

The drive is fairly peaceful, except for those few bad drivers that always have to ruin your day. If you drive, you know what I mean. I park my car in my favorite spot, and I stride off to my first period; AP Chemistry.

While I'm walking there, I'm wondering how the clan will react to what happened last night. Will they be happy or excited? Will they understand why I rejected Ray? Will they say that I should've rubbed it in Victoria's face?

But I'm also dreading it for one reason. It's the first period of my day, and it's also the first period I share with Ray. I head over to the class, and as usual, Veronica, Danielle, Sandy, Amy, Nina, and Rosemary are there.

"Sophia, I'm so proud of you!" they cheer happily. I know they mean me winning the position of vice president. I'm happy, but I still tell them about what happened last night. At the end of it, they all have the, "are you serious right now?" look plastered on their faces.

"Sophia, you don't need to feel bad. This is natural. There will be some weird things happening. But why aren't we acknowledging the fact that Ray asked Sophia to be his girlfriend? I've always known that Ray had the hots for you, Sophia," Rosemary advises.

I smile at her and thank her for her advice. I know Anthony told me yesterday that I did the right thing, but I still doubt myself over my decision. I need other people's opinions on this. Amy and Veronica continue to talk about other things, like our science teacher or just teachers we hate or hated.

I'm not paying attention, though. I'm noticing a hot guy walking around. He's tall, with shiny blond hair that's slicked back, kind of like Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter. He has light blue eyes, almost like the sky. He has pale skin, and he's just so tall. He's very slim, and he's very muscular. He also looks very lost.

"Oh, is Sophia staring at the hot guy wandering around the school?" Veronica asks, wiggling her eyebrows. I look back at Veronica.

"You shouldn't be looking at him either. I doubt your fiancé would like that," I say, smirking. Veronica glares at me, and looks away.

"Just because I wear $3 rings on my fingers doesn't mean I'm engaged," she states. I shrug.

"Whatever makes you sleep at night," I tell her. I continue teasing her, and then the sound of the bell ringing is heard, so off to science I go. I get to science, and when I get there, I see a little cage, and there are rats inside. A mother rat, and her little babies. I'm so awestruck, and all I can see is cuteness.

"Liking the rats, Sophia?" a voice says. I look up, and I can see my science teacher, Mr. Donaldson, looking at me. Not gonna lie, he has a reputation of being a perv. Everyone says he watches porn and looks like a total pervert. I'll be honest. I agree. I just don't feel comfortable around him. I could've sworn he was shooting me really dirty looks on the first day of school.

"They're cute, Mr. Donaldson," I tell him, not looking up from the cage.

"They're the snake's breakfast," he says in a deadpan voice. Oh gosh, I feel sick. Nausea starts to accumulate in the depths of me. I run back to my table before I have the chance to throw up.

When I get back, I see Ray, talking with Pete. His blue green eyes refuse to meet with mine in the duration of the conversation between him and Pete. "He must be a lot more upset than I thought," I think to myself as I dig for my textbook in my backpack. As I pull my belongings out of my backpack, I notice a familiar person walk into the door.

Oh no. It's the new blond kid. "Class, we have someone new here. I would like you to meet Roman Lerman," he says. Roman smiles, revealing his perfect teeth. Oh gosh, he's really hot. I can't help but blush a little.

"Anything you want to share, Roman?" Donaldson asks.

"I'm not related to Logan Lerman," he says, and everyone laughs. He goes to his seat and sits down. I notice Ray has a slightly suspicious look on his face. The look is nothing short of pure jealousy. Is he really that upset at his rejection? "How pathetic," I scoff to myself, as I open my lab notebook. As much as I'd like to analyze his jealousy, I can't do that at the moment. I need to work on my chemistry project with Rosemary.

I don't want to explain it here, because it's really complicated, but let's just say there's no coming back if we screw up a step. I grab my lab coat, put on my goggles, and get to work. I have my flasks, my liquids, and I start.

Over the next 45 minutes, Rosemary and I are mixing together liquids in order to satisfy the requirements in my lab. Donaldson gave us a paper with instructions, and we have to follow it and we have to record our observations.

During the entirety of the experiment, there's a lot of fumes being exhibited, and lots of different colors of liquid. It takes a lot of time, patience, and the desire to get a good grade in order for us to finish the lab.  When we conclude the lab, there are 10 minutes left for us to relax and clean up. We pour the liquid down the sink, rip off our goggles, and face Sandy and Nina. Sandy and Nina are partnered up, and they look up with amazement.

"How are you done?" Sandy asks, with amazement shining in her eyes.

"We just are very fast. We also stir constantly so that nothing sticks or deposits," I say, while pointing at the flask that Nina is stirring in. She had momentarily stopped to talk to Rosemary and I. Nina realizes the mistake and continues stirring while I smile.

Rosemary and I start talking, and we do until the bell rings. Once that bell rings, I run out of that classroom. I kind of want to avoid conversation with Ray at this point. I need to give him some space. Plus, I don't think I can handle it myself. I wouldn't be able to hold a fluid conversation with him without lots of awkward pauses and stammering.

I also need to get to my next class; a teacher's aide for my ninth grade English teacher, Mrs. Collins. She's easily the best English teacher ever. When I left her class, I vowed that I would be her teacher's aide one day. And it came. I am now her teacher's aide, and I love it.

When I get there, she congratulates me for my win, and I'm happy. I thank her, and start grading the essays the students turned in. My hand is about to start cramping when the bell rings, and I head over to California history, taught by Mr. Polucci, the teacher I hate the most.

While I grit my teeth together, I mentally prepare myself for his class. Imagine if the "Forever Alone" meme and the "Y U NO," meme had a kid that was parented by the Grinch. That's him in a nutshell.

He never shuts up, and he's so grumpy. When I get to history, the first thing he says is, "Well, here's Ms. Popular." Anger starts boiling up in me, but I hold it in, and I dig out my notebook and throw it in his troll-like face.

I sit down in my chair huffily, until Rosemary approaches me. "Someone's obviously been ticked off by Italian mess right there," she says. Considering I'm part Italian, that makes me laugh more than I anticipated it would.

"I knew you needed a good laugh, Sophia," she says, and sits down next to me.  The period goes by in a blur, but not really. Honors English is boring as hell, and then comes lunch. I walk with Sonia over to the lunch area, where I find Pandora and Kacey.

"Sophia, you were going to tell me something yesterday, but you ran out of time. What is it?" Sonia asks, while shoving her sandwich in her mouth. I tell her the whole thing Raymond said to me yesterday, and by the end of it, Sonia's standing there with her mouth hanging open.

"He did what? Sophia, you are one of the luckiest people ever. You don't know how lucky you are to have the school president ask you to be their girlfriend," she says.

"I know. It was just too much for me to handle. With all of the drama going on in my life, this is a lot for me to handle," I say.

"I get that. Give it some time. I don't expect you to immediately react. Let it settle in, because it's a really confusing time for you, Sophia. Especially for girls like you," she says. I smile.

"How are you so wise?" I ask. Sonia chuckles.

"My mom being a psychologist comes in handy a lot of times," she says, and I shrug. Can't argue with that.

"But either ways, don't be worried. Give it a few days," she says while stuffing her sandwich into her mouth. I nod, and go back to eating the leftover pasta from last night. This really isn't that great for me.

All of last night, I had dreams that Ray never forgave me and I ended up going nowhere in life. It was an awful dream, and I never want to experience that again. After Sonia and I are done with our lunch, we head over to the library. I go there so often I call it my sanctuary. I sit there and read my book, a book by one of my favorite authors, April Henry.

Sonia is working on her math homework, as she never finishes in school itself. She always says that she is too lazy, and to be honest, I feel the same way. I just need to finish my math homework otherwise my mom will yell at me for being lazy. As I'm reading my book, someone approaches me.

"Excuse me," the person says. I put down my book, and look up. Roman is standing there, his good looking face filled with questions. Now, what could a good-looking, new student be standing over me doing?

"Yes? What is it?" I ask in the nicest way possible. I really want to make a good impression on him. As they say, the first impression is always the last.

"You must be Sophia. You're in my science class," he says. No duh, Sherlock. It's really not easy to make a good first impression on someone when they are already testing your patience. I just sit there and listen to whatever nonsense that he has to say.

"I was wondering about the quiz. Does Donaldson offer extra credit?" he asks. That's what he wanted to ask me about? Didn't Donaldson put it in the syllabus? Either that or this guy was too ignorant to read it.

"Only sometimes, but not always. You never know," I say in a civil manner. He nods his head.

"Okay, thank you," he says, and finally leaves me alone. When he turns his back however, he turns his head towards me and says, "Oh, and you're really pretty, Sophia." He then winks at me really seductively.

Wait, what? He thinks I'm pretty? Yeah, if he said that in front of Ray, he would have murdered Roman and gutted him like a fish. Ray is still not talking to me, and I'm starting to wonder how badly I hurt him. Does Roman know about the whole thing? Is he trying to make a move on me since Ray is off of me?

What kind of mess has my life become?
