15: Escape

What a nice ending on the last chapter

We'll see what happens

Fitz's POV

[Two weeks later]

I glared at him through the bars of the cell.

The tiny, cramped cell that Dex, Biana, Sophie, Rex, Lex, Rory, Carter, Vincent, and I were all living in.

"Oooh, back to the death stare!" He exclaimed. "I wonder how long it'll take before he goes back to insults."

"We've been here forever," his friend (who seemed like a friend with benefits), Ruy complained, looking at him impatiently. "Can't we leave yet?"

"Not now," he said. "But it's almost time."

"Almost time for the shift to end or almost time for...?"

"The shift."

"Oh okay."

"Did you really think that we would do that to them yet?"

"I don't know. It's been a long time."

"Two days."

"Yep, a long time."

"But seriously, it's not time yet."

"For the shift or...?"

"The shift Ruy!"

"Damn, just making sure."

"Maybe later today. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe a week from now. I don't know. I'll tell you when she gives the command."

"The...?"

"YES RUY!"

"Okay, I got it. When does the shift end?"

"Lunchtime."

"Well I declare it lunchtime now!"

"No. It's seven am."

"But I'm hungry!"

"Then go get waffles!"

"But I like pancakes!"

"Then go get pancakes!"

"Actually, no, I changed my mind. I want toast."

"Then go get toast!"

"But I changed my mind again. I want cereal!"

"Go get breakfast!"

"But I want you to come with me!"

"Why?"

"Because I want to eat breakfast with you."

"Why? I already ate."

"Please?"

"Fine. I hope you know that you know how much I'm risking by leaving them alone."

"I do, Alvar!"

"Just go to breakfast Ruy."

"With—"

"YES I AM GOING WITH YOU! LET'S GO!"

So Ruy and his boyfriend left. I could've sworn Ruy threw us a wink when he left.

Sophie got up from fake sulking in the corner, uncovering the tiny hole that we'd discovered a week ago.

"Quick!" She urged.

We'd already devised a strategy. Biana goes first, then Lex, Rory, Rex, Vincent, Carter, Dex, me, then Sophie.

We got out quickly and quietly, closing the door behind us.

We crawled through the dark tunnel, no idea where it led other than to freedom.

***

Lex's POV bc why not

"BEAUTIFUL, FRESH AIR!" I yelled, bursting out of the tunnel into a beautiful forest.

I hug Rory as tight as I can, peppering his slightly confused face with kisses.

"Okay, Lex, this is great, but we have to keep up with everyone," Rory informs me, gesturing the group who is currently walking ahead of us.

"Sorry!" I say, grabbing his hand and racing to where out spots were in line.

I couldn't stop myself from smelling the air. It was thick and sweet with lots of flowers. It smells sooo good.

The ground was soft and mossy. The smell of petrichor surrounded us. Yes, Bex teaches me her vocabulary.

Petrichor is that smell that only happens after rain. It's the smell of fresh rain on dry soil

Biana stops moving all of a sudden. I go to her side and immediately back away.

There was a huge cliff right there.

Did I mention I'm scared of heights?

Rory pulls me away from the edge as I close my eyes and start counting seconds. This how I deal with my fears.

"Guys!" He shouts. "Giant cliff! Be careful!"

I open my eyes slowly. I lean my head on Rory's chest. Rory smiles and ruffles my hair.

"Come on," he says, grabbing my hand. "We've gotta keep up!"

"Fiiiinnnneeeee,"I complain, stumbling after Rory as the group scouts the edge, looking for a way out.

***

Rex's POV bc I can

Carter, Vincent, and I link hands as we scour the edge, looking for a possible way out.

So far, no luck.

I hope Bex is okay. We've been gone for over a week. I don't know, I stopped counting after eight days.

"Guys," I murmur. "Do you think we can get home?"

"Yeah, of course!" Carter exclaimed, being his usual, optimistic self.

"Maybe. It's definitely possible, but maybe not," Vincent mumbled. He was always so serious. That's why I liked him. It's good to have a polar opposite to you. Plus, it was fun to kiss him when he was so shy and timid and I was so bold.

"I think we will," I said brightly.

"EVERYONE! I FOUND SOMETHING!" Someone exclaimed from like thirty feet away.

I ran toward the person with my guys, arriving pretty much at the same time as everyone else.

Biana was the one who found something

"Look," she said, pointing to a small cabin tucked away.

Except...it was on a hill. Very far away.

"We can make it!" Rory said. "If we can make it two weeks in that place, then we can make it a couple of miles!"

So we started hiking.

***

Sophie's POV

It was immediately clear that some people, including me, could not hike. I was too clumsy, Vincent was too interested in everything else, and Lex kept staring at the little house and not paying attention when he tripped over roots and stuff.

So we had to get carried.

Rory was big enough to carry Lex.

Vincent was carried by Fitz.

And I got a ride from Biana.

Well, at least she was my girlfriend.

I felt bad for Vincent, who had to be carried by his boyfriend's brother's boyfriend.

That didn't make as much sense s I wanted it to, but I'm sure the readers can figure it out.

It didn't seem like we were getting any closer to the house. And the sun was beating down on us, even through the trees. It must be around noon.

Plus we had to stop for frequent water breaks.

Which was hard because we didn't have water.

We must've been the most under-prepared hikers ever.

"Am I too heavy?" I ask Biana. "I can get down if—"

"No. It's fine." But she was panting really hard.

"I'm gonna get down."

Thankfully, she didn't protest.

So I started to walk next to her, holding her hand so I could balance.

Finally, when the sky was darkening, we saw the house come into view.

Well, that was crazy, wasn't it?

Cya'll laters!
