"Hazel, sweetie! Time to get up!" Persephone's voice made Hazel stir and clutch onto Pinky, the slightly tatty teddy bear she'd had since she was just a baby.

"Haze, first day back at school today, remember? You're in Year 1!" Hazel groaned, stuffing her head into her pillow.

"Go 'way..." She mumbled, allowing the pillow to be taken off her face. The bed dipped as Sephy sat beside her, laughing as Hazel wrinkled her nose and screwed her hands into fists, rubbing her eyes vigorously. Suddenly, she shot up.

"Neeks?"

"Nico went off to Leo's. He says he's sorry for going... and that you still snore!" Sephy giggled, tickling her under the chin lightly.

"Do not!" Hazel squirmed.

"Do too. Now, chop chop. Get yourself ready and come down for toast and jam soon!" She left the room and Hazel moaned, sliding her feet out of the comfy bed and pushing herself up before trudging out of her room to the bathroom. Urgh, she hated brushing her teeth.

"Today, we're going to be looking at different types of mini beasts!" Miss Athena told the class. Hazel cheered; she loved looking at all the pretty ladybirds with their red and black shells, and the funny beetles with their scuttling legs. "I'd like you all to get into partners and collect a sheet from Mr Malcolm."

She pointed towards a young man hovering by the door, with scruffy blond hair and glasses that he kept pushing up his nose nervously. Hazel stared at him, wondering who he was, before realising everyone else around her had stood up and found partners.

Hazel scrambled up quickly, holding her hand up. "Hey, anyone wanna go with me?" She called. However, no one gave her a second glance, instead running towards Mr Malcolm like a stampede. Hazel felt her mouth screw up as tears began flooding down her face. She didn't have anyone to go with.

"Hazel, what's wrong? Can't you find a partner?" Miss Athena cooed suddenly, coming from behind her and putting a comforting arm around her shoulders.She too was very young, with curly blonde hair and sparkling grey eyes.

"No!" Hazel sobbed, flicking her curly hair defiantly. "No one picked me!"

Miss Athena tutted sadly. "Well, I've got an idea! Fai here doesn't have a partner either. Why don't you go with him?" Hazel turned to see a slightly chubby boy with big brown eyes and a nervous smile. His dark hair fell into his eyes. Hazel only just recognised him to be the boy who joined right at the end of reception, who she didn't know much.

Hazel crossed her arms under her chin and stuck her nose in the air. "Don't wanna!"

Miss Athena tutted again, this time disapprovingly. "Now, don't be silly. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun together. Come along!" She placed one hand on each of their backs and gently propelled them away towards the door.

"Right, I want you to have a look around the whole garden and see what mini beasts you can find! Then, write down what you see on your sheet of paper. If anyone wants a magnifying glass, they're just over here in this tray. Off you go!" Miss Athena smiled at the class, before turning away to talk to Mr Malcolm.

"So... what's your name?" Fai asked hesitantly. Hazel saw that his eyes were fixed firmly to the ground and that his cheeks were pink.

"My name is Hazel. Nice to meet you, Frank," Hazel snapped, arms still crossed.

"Um, no... my name's-"

"I'm gonna look under these rocks. You go get a pencil." With that, she bent down and began poking at a pile of stones near the footpath. Frank sighed and wandered away.

Hazel squealed as a large millipede emerged from the ground next to her. Its many legs wriggled as she attempted to pick it up, before it quickly burrowed back into the soil.

"Hey Frank! I found a-" Hazel stopped as a daisy was thrust under her nose, and looked up to see Frank staring at her with bright, hopeful eyes.

"I found this for you! Because you're cute!" Frank grinned. Hazel sighed impatiently.

"Oh, don't be silly! I'm gonna get married to Bob the Builder when I'm older, so I'm afraid I can't like you back." However, she felt a rush of pity as Frank's face crumpled. She sighed once again, before saying: "Ok, ok. I guess I can be your girlfriend for now. But you gotta get me extra apple slices at break!"

Frank nodded eagerly, and she slipped her hand into his. "Now, I think I just saw a worm!"

"Neeks, Neeks, Neeks!" Hazel ran into her half-brother's room, dropping her fairy rucksack on the floor and grinning up at him and his boyfriend.

"Oh, hey Leo! Guess what! I just got a boyfriend!" She clutched the dirty, slightly wilted daisy that Frank had given her and held it up to their faces.

Nico laughed, reaching out and ruffling her mop of curly hair. "Good one, Haze!"

"What's his name?" Leo asked, grabbing her waist and pulling her onto the bed between him and Nico.

"His name's Frank. He keeps saying it's Fa... Fay... I dunno how to pronounce it, but I'm gonna call him Frank cause it's more funny!"

Nico chuckled, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "Well, I'm glad to hear you had a good day back!" Leo nodded in agreement.

Hazel jumped up and down excitedly. "Yup! Anyway, I'm completely and utterly starving! I'm gonna go grab a snack!" And, to the sound of her brother and his boyfriend's laughter, she ran from the room in search of some food.

I know, I know! Completely random or what!? But I thought we all needed a break from the sad stuff, and six year old Hazel is just so cuuute!!! And Frank... Awwwwwww XD
