Chapter 4: Leo Valdez

Leo Valdez flopped down onto his bed. He was exhausted, but a huge smile was etched onto his face. His boyfriend, Nico di Angelo, had just left his house after a full day of pillow fights, gossiping, and basically just messing around.

A tiny squeal left Leo's mouth as he remembered the kiss they'd had just before Nico had left, before he slapped a hand to his mouth, embarrassed even though no one was there. Yup, he was definitely head-over-heels for his Ghost King.

The curly-haired Latino boy grabbed his iPod and stuffed the earbuds into his ears, laughing as Girl on Fire came on. He had a strange obsession with fire, which seemed pretty horrendous considering his own mother had died in a fire.

Thinking of her warm brown eyes and soft caring smile made Leo sad. Sure, his dad - a large, bulky man with gigantic muscles - was a pretty awesome dad, but he worked at a local blacksmiths for long days, and had never been the type of person Leo felt comfortable to tell personal things.

Leo's mom, Esperanza, had had her own workshop, where Leo would help her to create robots that offered to pour tea and automatons that had blasted out songs and danced on demand and other crazy things that shouldn't have existed... but did.

But Leo wasn't one to sit down for long sad hours and reminisce over things that had happened ages ago. Anyway, he had ADHD, so he never seemed to stop moving. Ever.

He annoyed his friends a lot, too, but most of the time they were only kidding. His best, best, friends were Piper and Jason, who he'd known since, like, the beginning of time. Piper was beautiful, smart and kind, whilst Jason was the 'perfect boy'.  Well, most of the time anyway...

It was actually Jason's birthday today, and Leo and his friends were going to take him go-carting as a surprise in two days. It was going to be epic!

Then there was Percy and Annabeth. Percy was also ADHD, and could eat an entire supermarket if Annabeth, his sensible and extremely clever girlfriend, didn't stop him.

And finally, Nico Di Angelo. Dark, mysterious, moody... but so adorable! With a cute little button nose, black hair that hung over his face, and wide, shiny eyes framed with long eyelashes, Nico was the best boyfriend ever. Plus, he had the cutest little half-sister, Hazel, who was the sweetest six year-old Leo had ever met.

Leo closed his eyes dreamily, allowing a smile to slide onto his face, when suddenly his dad's face loomed over him, laughing. Leo blushed, ripping out his headphones quickly.

"Dad!?  I didn't hear you come in!" Leo yelped.

"Yeah, I figured! That thing was on pretty loud, you should probably turn it down..." his dad pointed at the iPod. "So, did you have a nice time with your boyfriend?"

Leo blushed even harder as his dad winked. Oh, and yes, Leo's father was absolutely fine with his son being gay. Thank goodness!

"Umm... yeah. It was ok..." Leo mumbled quietly, not giving much away.

"Ahh, did you kiss. Did you get all gooey and look in each other's eyes and-"

Leo let out a sigh of relief as the telephone rung from the hallway. His dad shot him a you're lucky look, before leaving the room.

Leo turned over again and stuffed his face into his black and orange, flame-patterned duvet. He was starting to get tired now.

All of a sudden, there was a knock at the door. His dad came back in, his face now solemn and serious as he held out the phone towards Leo.

"It's for you, Leo. It's Piper..."
