Chapter 17: Thalia Grace / Jason Grace

Thalia wished her school wasn't so stupid, and didn't give her so much homework. She was in sixth form, literally just about to leave school and make decisions for herself, and she'd already firmly decided she never wanted to see another equation in her entire life. So why was she still learning about them!?

"Dad, I've got to go. I've got tons of work at home..."

Her dad looked surprised, watching as he got up from the bed. "But you've only been here for ten minutes. Jason's awake, why would you want to leave?" His face fell as he studied Thalia closely. "You aren't still messing around in school are you? Thals, I told you, you can't afford to do this anymore with exams coming up. Extra work will just stress you out m-"

"No! I swear, I haven't got extra work. I've just got loads, honest." That wasn't the exact truth, but Thalia couldn't bear to put her dad under any more stress.

Her dad rubbed his growing stubble, his hazel eyes outlined with dark bags. He was exhausted. "Fine. Just... just behave." Thalia nodded gravely and kissed her brother's forehead, ruffling his golden hair.

"See you soon, little bro." She swung her bag back onto her shoulder before turning away and leaving, feeling incredibly guilty. The bag straps cut into her uncomfortably, the weight of the several folders in there making Thalia want to curl up in a ball and scream.

Then a thought struck her. Would Will be in the café by her house again? Not that it matters, Thalia told herself firmly, it was just nice to have free food. However, as she walked past, she couldn't stop herself from looking in and staring at the counter. Nope, definitely no Will.

But it doesn't matter, Thalia continued to try and convince herself. In fact, I'm going to go and do my work in there -without Will - to prove how much I don't care! But, as she entered into the quiet, cosy building and set out her textbooks she realised one thing.

She really was missing Will.

The coffee came to her, and was excepted with a small, tired smile. None of the work seemed to be making sense, and Thalia put her head in her hands, wanting to cry. It wasn't like she could let her dad down... again.

Finally, Thalia pulled out her phone, hesitating before clicking on Will's number.

Thalia - Hi Will. Just 2 let u know, tomoz we r meeting in the park by the hospital at 2. K? (Btw, don't get cocky that I texted you. This is probs the only time :P)

Surprisingly, there was a reply within a couple of minutes. Thalia laughed as she read the reply.

Will - Well, I don't get much choice do I? And me, cocky? Never! C u! XD

Finally, for the first time in a long time, Thalia felt calm.

Jason's POV:

Early Next Morning

"Eek, I'm going to fall! Oh my goodness! Jason..!" With a squeal, Piper pushed her face firmly into his chest, her arms latching around his torso tightly.

Jason laughed, leaning down and pressing a kiss to his girlfriend's forehead. "Pipes, I don't fall, you know that! In fact, I wonder if I can..."

He lurched in mid-air, causing Piper to scream as he chuckled silently.

"Jason, I swear, if you try to fall right now I will... I will hunt you down and cut off your toes and, and-"

"Piper, I would never do that," Jason stopped messing around - though he was still laughing - and leant down, whispering in her ear. "Relax. I want to show you something amazing."

Gingerly, Piper pulled away from Jason's chest and looked up into his sincere, sparkling blue eyes. Her hands remained like claws on his shoulders, though.

"Ok."

"Hold on tight!" Jason wrapped his arms around her waist and suddenly they shot up into the air, spinning like a bullet.

"Jason!! You said you wouldn't... oh, my..." Piper breathed out as Jason turned, swooping through the sky like a bird soaring through clouds. The clumps of colourful buildings were like tiny dollhouses, the pedestrians milling around like busy ants.

Jason grinned as he felt Piper's hands loosen from his shoulders, stretching out until they cut through the air like wings. She let out a yell, feeling the words get lost in the wind, and turned back to Jason, her choppy brown hair swirling around her face.

She pulled herself closer, her hands back on his chest. "I love you so much, Jase." Her heart pounded as a crooked grin spread on his face, his scar stretching along a little of his top lip.

"I know you do," Jason murmured, just before their lips met in a perfect kiss, unseen by everyone.

It was perfect.

Suddenly, the air under Jason's feet seemed to dislodge, and the couple yelled in sync as they began to tumble down through the sky.

Piper was breathing hard, her eyes wide in panic. "Jase... Jason, you said..."

Jason opened his mouth to say something, but found his words wouldn't come out right. They slurred oddly, almost as though he was drunk, and Piper's eyes widened further in worry. "Jason? Jason!"

"Pi'er, wha-?" The sky darkened suddenly, from sapphire blue to smoky grey in a couple of seconds. Startlingly cold rain hit their skin, hard, and lightning began to flash. It cracked, horrifyingly loud, and Piper screamed as Jason leant forward, protecting her from the crackling electric.

"Stop!"

The light vanished immediately, swallowed by darkness as Jason went limp, falling, falling, falling...

"Jason, sweetie, wake up now."

Jason's eyes shot open, feeling a cold cloth being pressed against his forehead and providing relief from the hot sweat that covered his body. He peered upwards, still breathing hard, and blinked furiously in an attempt to clear the fog from his eyes.

The figure above him, who he had now deduced to having short brown hair and glasses, noticed Jason calming and said, "Hi Jason! I'm Nurse Tia. You've probably heard me looking after you a lot, so it's totally fine if you're fed up of my voice!"

Jason was too tired to laugh. He was still shook up from his nightmare, so he hoped a tiny, well-meaning smile would act as an appropriate answer. Luckily, he heard Nurse Tia giggle.

"There we go! I knew I'd get you smiling! Did you have a nightmare just then?"

Obviously, Jason grumped in his head, though in reality he just nodded unhappily.

"Do you mind me asking what it was about?"

Jason sighed. Couldn't she leave him alone? He was exhausted, and his blurry vision was making him dizzy.

"Ok, I'm sorry. You don't need to tell me..."

Ah, great, the guilt trip. Jeez, Jason thought to himself. I woke up in a bad mood today!

He forced himself to open his mouth lazily, already knowing the words wouldn't come out properly and hating it. "Me an' Pi'er... flyin'. F-fall." He stopped for a second, hating how dumb he sounded. "Li' a'thiden'..."

"It reminded you of the accident?" Nurse Tia double-checked. Jason hummed in response, eyelids closing rapidly, and he heard the nurse chuckle fondly.

"Ok, I'm sorry for the interrogation. Get back to sleep, it's still-"

Jason was asleep way before she finished talking, falling rapidly into a deep and restless sleep.
