Chapter 12. Nico Di Angelo/Piper McLean

To say Nico was panicking was an understatement.

Nico was pooping-his-pants nervous, with a whole ton of panic stuck on top of that.

Ok, so, his best mate was potentially dying again, his friends were freaking out, and the school's most notorious - and most terrifying - bully had just found out him and Leo were gay.

Of course Nico was worrying.

"We'll be ok, Neeks. We might just have to keep a low profile for a bit," Leo comforted him sweetly, whispering the words into his ear and wrapping him into a hug. Nico's head fit snugly into the crook of Leo's neck, and Leo pressed his cheek on top of Nico's raven black hair.

"Hmm," Nico agreed half-heartedly. It was nice of Leo to try, but he was downright lying. They both knew it.

They broke apart from the hug and saw Annabeth signing: I need to get back. My parents are going out tonight and I need to look after my brothers. She gave Piper a handy packet of tissues and squeezed her arm. Jason will be fine, the doctors will sort him out.

Piper nodded weakly, pressing her fists to her eyes, and Annabeth walked away.

"Yeah, I should go with her. She's helping me with my maths homework! Bye guys," Percy waved awkwardly and practically ran after his girlfriend, his backpack hanging open.

Piper burst into another round of tears.

"I need to go to Jason... I need to see him..." she mumbled almost incoherently, turning abruptly and disappearing into the distance. Nico cautiously touched Leo's arm, and his boyfriend looked down at him with a pained expression.

"Can you stay at mine tonight, Neeks. I don't want to be on my own."

Nico nodded, resting his head on Leo's shoulder, exhausted. The couple followed the rest of their friends and began to walk back home.

"Why so early, boys!?" Mr Valdez boomed as soon as the pair walked into the kitchen, a big grin on his bearded face. He was stirring something delicious-smelling in a large saucepan, probably another spicy Spanish dish.

Though Mr Valdez wasn't Spanish, Esperanza Valdez had been, and before... the accident, she'd taught countless Spanish recipes to both Leo and his dad.

"Um... early finish today, remember?" Leo muttered. His father's grin just grew.

"Yeah, right! More like skipping school! That's very bad. Now, grab a cookie and go get that homework done!"

Nico almost laughed at the bemused look on Leo's face as he walked past his dad to get a biscuit.

"So..?" Nico's eyes snapped open as Leo asked the sudden question, disturbing the peace.

"Mmhh... what?"

"What are we going to do tomorrow? With Beckendorf?"

Nico sighed. "I dunno Leo, leave it."

"Ok..."

There was silence once more. Nico snuggled further into Leo's side, feeling his boyfriend's arm tighten around him. He closed his eyes, smiling contentedly as he felt his hair being played with softly, and settled into a comfortable position...

"Neeks?"

Nico let out another sigh, this time rolling over to face Leo. The Latino boy looked down at him, chocolate-brown eyes wide with fear.

"Neeks, I'm really scared. I was bullied at my old school for being gay, and I thought we'd be fine here... but now Beckendorf - Beckendorf - has found out, and I don't want to-"

Leo stopped suddenly, turning his face away from Nico's and sniffing.

"Leo, no, please don't cry," Nico unfurled himself and wrapped his boyfriend into a huge hug, allowing Leo to sob into his chest. It was usually the other way round, with Nico crying and Leo comforting, but it was obvious Leo was terrified.

"Sorry, I'm being silly," Leo looked down, guilty. Nico curled a strand of his boyfriend's curly, dark brown hair around his finger, before allowing his hand to touch his chin, pulling Leo's face up and meeting his eyes.

"I'm scared too, Leo. But we'll get through this." He held out his hand. "As long as we're together?"

Leo managed a weak smile. "As long as we're together." His hand joined Nico's and they leant in, sparks flying as their lips met in a sweet, meaningful kiss.

Neither of them noticed the post-it-note that had been stuck to the top of Leo's notebook, baring sprawling writing that read, I'll get you tomorrow, freak.

Piper's POV

Piper: Are you at home?

Thalia: Yeah, thinking about Jase.

Piper glanced at Thalia's response and sighed, stuffing her phone back into her pocket. There wasn't a time when Piper wasn't thinking about Jason, and there probably wasn't a time when Thalia wasn't thinking about her brother, but Piper did not feel like meeting up with Jason's sister for a pity party.

Her phone buzzed again. It was Thalia, asking if she wanted to come round. Piper typed a short no and switched her phone off, not in the mood for any more texting.

She could go home, but... no, she wanted to see Jason. She wanted to see his perfect face, feel his fluffy blonde hair, gaze into his sparkling blue - Piper stopped herself. She couldn't afford to get carried away.

Instead, she stopped in her tracks, turned around, and started walking towards the hospital.

"Floor two, Corridor three, Room two."

"Thank you," Piper told the unsmiling receptionist gratefully, but he had already turned away to his computer screen. "Oh, right..."

She turned tail and practically ran away, scanning the confusing, brightly coloured map on the wall. Not taking anything in, she bounded up the stairs two steps at a time, disoriented by the continuous blank white corridors.

"Are you ok there?"

Piper stopped so abruptly she almost fell over. A man in a white doctor's coat, with black hair in braids and a cool, relaxed smile stood before her.

"Yes, err, do you know where Corridor three is?"

The doctor beamed at her. "Just carry on up here and turn left. It's the door right at the end."

"Thank you, um..." she squinted at his name tag. "Dr. Austin."

"No problem!" She heard him call after her as she continued to walk briskly.

She stopped yet again by the sight of a tall sandy-haired man sitting beside a bleached-blonde woman in a row of chairs.

"Mr Grace?" The man looked up, puzzled, before spotting her. His face broke into a weary smile.

"Piper! Great to see you."

She nodded absently. "Yeah. How's Jason?"

"Oh darling, it was dreadful! He went all pale and sweaty, and they had to wheel him out of the room! Poor sweetie, there's a chance-"

"That's enough, Hera," Mr Grace placed a hand on her knee, effectively shutting her up, before turning back to Piper. "They're finishing up the operation now. It should be fine, if they can stop the bleeding..."

"Grace? Mr Grace?" A male doctor with an overly bright smile poked his head out from the frosted glass door. His name tag read Dr. Apollo. "You may come in now."

~·~·~

"Oh, thank god! Jason, I... I..." Mr Grace burst out as soon as he saw his only son lying on the bed. He pressed a kiss to his forehead and placed a hand on Jason's shoulder, the other hand against his own forehead.

Piper examined her boyfriend's still body. He looked the same as he had last time, except his hair had been shaved and a bright white bandage was wrapped around his head. He still looked handsome with short hair; Piper reckoned it just showed off his beautiful features better, to be honest.

"He is still in a coma, on life support, but there is absolutely no chance the internal bleeding will start up again. His body is just repairing itself," Dr. Apollo told the trio, but Piper was barely listening.

"Don't ever give me another shock like that again, Sparky." She whispered in her comatose boyfriend's ear, before thinking about what she'd said. "Excuse the pun."

Leaning over, she kissed his chapped lips before settling down in the uncomfortable blue bedside seat for the rest of the visiting hours.
