Chapter Thirty Eight

It was the day before DeVante and Solana's wedding, aka January 16th and they were just signing their pre nup.

Pre nups were supposed to be done weeks if not months before a wedding but DeVante and Solana were kind of out of money at the moment, especially how Solana was behind on bills so they couldn't really have done anything sooner.

It was like studying for an important exam days if not hours before. It wasn't really ideal at all, unless someone had a good excuse on why.

Solana's wedding dress fit was even yesterday. The dress was too big for her but because she was famous, she therefore got some special treatment.

"And signed!"

DeVante had signed it ages ago. Solana was just a slow reader.

Her adopted daughter Ezinné was with her as well because she was having a play date with Estelle, despite their six years age difference.

Being a funeral director got way too depressing for Enrique so now he was a wedding director instead.

"Y'all are lucky you're famous. 'Cause if you weren't then there's no way I would accept a pre nup being the day before the wedding."

He had gone after that, with Solana breathing a sigh of relief when that was over.

She had been divorced with Jordan Francis for five months and they didn't look back on that at all.

Ironically Jordan Francis and Katari too were getting married, but none of them were really aware of this, just like how they weren't aware of DeVante and Solana's wedding.

"Baby, I can't believe we're getting married!"

Ezinné couldn't believe that they were getting married either.

DeVante couldn't believe it either but now that they were actually getting married, for some reason he felt as though he wasn't ready for it yet.

It had just lowkey seemed like too much responsibility, aka something he didn't really have.

Just earlier this week, DeVante had completely forgotten to pick up his sister Estelle from this after school club because he had gone to the cinemas with Severin.

He had beaten himself up so much after that especially how he got in trouble by his mum, making him down in the dumps all week.

When DeVante had heard that though, he fake smiled, which became a frown after.

Luckily the two of them had known each other well enough to be able to identify when a smile was fake or real.

"You okay, D?"

"I don't know, Solana. Don't you think we're kind of rushing into this? I thought I had this under control but now I'm not so sure anymore."

He was saying that now?

The day before the wedding?

He should have said that ages ago.

He had been feeling this way for about a week now but he was too scared to say anything.

And of course they had their arguments however DeVante didn't want any of them to be about their upcoming wedding.

Seeing Solana's face light up just talking about the wedding made it harder for DeVante to break the news to her.

Until now.

He figured he should have just told her the truth.

"And you're just telling me this now?!"

"I know, I know. I should have said something sooner. But I mean think about it, we've only had five month or so of courtship."

Actually it was seven months and if DeVante hadn't remembered that then there was kind of a problem somewhere.

Either way, DeVante didn't think that he was ready for this. Plus he remembered that Solana and Jordan Francis had eight years or something like that of courtship.

"So you remember how long me and Jordan Francis' courtship was but not how long ours is?" Solana reminded him. "But think about this way. We've known each other for almost a year now. Does that make you feel any better?"

Yeah, he guessed.

"I'm just worried that what's going to happen between you and Jordan Francis is going to happen between me and you."

Basically a divorce.

DeVante didn't want a divorce.

Solana just silently laughed.

"DeVante, we're not even married yet and you're already worried about a divorce! But I understand where you're coming from. You're lucky I've already been married before. I can tell you what you can and can't do in marriage. You might know some things but not necessarily everything."

Plus Jordan Francis was her past, DeVante was her present. Hence why he was a gift.

They had hugged after that, they may have done things extremely late but they had their reasons.

Nothing could have ruined their day... or so they thought.

Sooner or later, someone had come banging on their door as the two of them were kissing each other.

They were banging furiously, with DeVante checking to see who it was when Solana had asked him.

"Open the door, DeVante, man!" Severin had hollered from outside. "I gotta talk to both of y'all! It's crazy important!"

DeVante didn't know what Severin wanted to talk to him about, therefore opening the door for him where he had hyperventilated.

"Whoa, Severin. You okay, bro?"

"Ain't got no time for this chiz, D! I gotta tell both you and Solana something."

Looking at one another, Solana had then shrugged at DeVante, with Severin breathing in and out as he had sat down.

He didn't live too far from here actually, so he had most likely ran here or something, and they were just lowkey about to find out why.

"What's the problem?" Solana wanted to know.

"Okay, so y'all know how you two are getting married?"

They had nodded in perfect harmony, staring at Severin blankly.

"And y'all know how Jordan Francis and Katari are getting married too?"

No, they didn't.

Otherwise they would have probably competed with each other over a lot of things by now, but they didn't.

Both of them had reacted the same way, with Solana saying they are?! and DeVante saying no way to that.

Severin had stared at the two of them as if they had never seen dust before.

"What; y'all didn't know that they were getting married?"

Ever since Solana had divorced Jordan Francis, they had kept contact minimal with each other.

That was until Solana was fully over him, sadly deleting his number with Jordan Francis actually doing the same thing.

It had seemed as though they had agreed to do this, but they didn't. Everything was just a coincidence instead.

Plus ever since Katari had rejected DeVante, he had avoided talking to her too.

This was because he would have just thought about the time she she rejected him, and the dude had better as well as more happy or important things to think about.

But all in all, no.

They didn't know the other couple was getting married.

"You guys are getting married on the same day."

Pause.

"At the same time, almost."

Then another one.

"Almost at the same location."

Jesus Christ, this had to be some sort of joke. This was what they had moe or less gotten for leaving everything until the last minute.

At the same time, the two of them didn't really have much of a choice. They had to do what they had to do.

If anything, this didn't sound like a coincidence. It had seemed like it was on purpose.

"Nah, none of us knew the other couple was getting married though, so it couldn't have been on purpose," DeVante had noticed. "But Severin, why are you telling us this?"

What did he mean why was he telling them this?

Because people such as him, Layla Grace, Serayah's parents and then some had been invited to both weddings.

Severin didn't realise that they had clashed until yesterday, albeit all four of them were too busy to pick up their phones.

The reason why they wanted to do their wedding tomorrow was because of the weather. It was going to apparently rain for an entire fortnight.

And tomorrow was going to be the sunniest day within said fortnight.

Whilst Jordan Francis and Katari's wedding was going to be from 4-7, Solana and DeVante was going to be from 4:30-8 instead.

It would have been worse if they were actually in the same location. They would have lowkey had to change everything last minute.

"Even worse, I hear they got Lil Kim to perform. But regardless, they don't want a huge wedding. Only about 75 people are going," Severin had informed them.

They told their friends to tell their friends to tell their friends to tell their friends about the wedding. A continuous cycle.

They would have rather had a small amazing wedding than a large terrible one any day.

They got Lil Kim?

How on Earth were they supposed to compete with that?

"Yeah, but we got Jodeci. Ain't that right, DeVante?"

The people going to Jordan Francis and Katari's wedding were most likely only coming for Lil Kim. DeVante didn't want people coming to their wedding because of Jodeci.

And not because they actually wanted to see them get married.

"They could come for both," Solana suggested. "You're friends with them, right?"

No, he wasn't.

They had fallen out seven months ago during some fight at what would have been Serayah's 26th birthday party.

They hadn't talked to each other since then. DeVante had blocked them all.

When he had explained this to both of them, they were kindly having a go at him to talk to them as it had been way too long.

DeVante didn't know.

"You'll have to do so eventually. Just start now." Severin commented.

"They've probably forgotten what we argued about. Or worse, they most likely don't care."

He was making assumptions for them without actually talking to them.

It had seemed as though both Severin and Solana weren't taking no for an answer, because they weren't.

Sighing, DeVante had then unblocked them, though as he was about to that was when an unknown number called him.

It's K-Ci
Got a new number this morning

It had now really seemed as though God wanted them to be friends.

Going to one corner, he had then picked up the phone once and for all.

Would you go to DeVante and Solana's wedding or Katari and Jordan Francis' wedding instead?
