Chapter 18

Austin's POV
Alan didn't say anything. He just clutched Cole. He had stopped crying but I don't think that was a good thing in this case. I was afraid that if his mom actually did pass right now he would just shut off every emotion. He would become lifeless.

We waited an hour. Two hours. Three hours. Nurses and doctor came in and out of the room rushing in different directions and finally a doctor came out and crouched in front of us. He looked at me and mouthed I'm sorry before clearing his throats causing Alan to lift his head from Cole's hair.
"Mr. Ashby I'm sorry but your mother didn't make it. We tried all we cou-" Alan stood up mid sentence, scooting Cole off his lap, and walked down the hallway and into the elevator.

"Umm he still has things to sign...she'll be transported to the morgue and any next of kin on her records will be contacted. We need him as soon as possible to come back and other measure according to lawyers will be taken." He smiled at me softly and I nodded. He stood up and walked back into the room stopping at the door. "If he," he pointed to Cole,"Would like to see her it's okay." Then he walked into the room.

"Cole do you want to see your Momma?" He nodded and I picked him up. I was worried about Alan but I still had Cole. I walked into the room and a nurse smiled at me sympathetically. I walked over to the bed and set Cole down. He looked at her a moment before standing on his toes and kissing her cheek. "I love you Momma. You and bubby both. Take care of each other and have fun in the clouds. I'll see you all one day. I love you." He whispered and tears fell from his eyes. I picked him back up and carried him out of the hospital.

I looked around for my car and remembered it was still pulled over beside of the street where the accident happened. I walked with Cole and when we got to the place of the accident my car was gone. I looked everywhere when it dawned on me. Alan must have took it. I had left my keys in it when the accident happened. I pulled my phone out and called him. Once...twice...three times...four..five,six,seven. He never answered it just rang and rang. I sighed in frustration and walked Cole and myself to the nearest bus station.

I love Alan to death but I was mad. I understand he was going through something no one should but he left Cole, he took my car, and he wasn't answering his phone. He was worrying me to death. He was taking this hard but what about his brother? Alan was his rock and he just left! The bus pulled up and we climbed on. We got to his house and the front door was wide open.

I carefully walked into the house and nothing seemed disturbed. The only thing different was Alan's phone on the coffee table. He had been here.
"Is Ally here?" Cole asked.
"I'm sorry buddy."
"Where is he?" He asked and started to cry.
"I don't know."
"I want Ally! I need him! He can't leave me too!" Cole cried. He started shaking and I held him tight as he thrashed around.
"Mason left, Momma le-eft, dad left, now Alan's gonna leave me!" I was shocked I had never heard Cole use Alan's actual name. "He never cared-d! V-veronica was right! He doesn't care about me. He doesn't l-love me."

"Cole," I said and made him look at me. "Alan loves you with everything he's got. He would never leave you."
"He already did!"
"He's going through a lot an-"
"I miss them too!" He yelled. "I just want Ally." He cried. "Don't leave me Austin. Please." He begged and it broke my heart.
"Never buddy." I said.

He cried and cried until they turned into soft sobs and he got up from my lap. I followed him as he ran up the stairs into Alan's room.
"C-can I sleep in here? Ally usually lets me when I'm upset or scared."
"Of course. Lets get you changed first."
I went to his room and grabbed some pajamas and when I turned around he was sitting on Mason's bed, fiddling with a stuffed animal.

"Do you think Mason would care if I slept with his stuffed animal?" He asked quietly and I smiled at him softly. "I'm sure he wouldn't mind at all."
I handed him the clothes and left the room while he changed. A few minutes later he came out with the animal in hand and we walked back to Alan's room. He climbed in the bed and I tucked the covers in around him.

"Will you be okay while I go downstairs for a little bit?"
"Yea. Just don't leave. Goodnight Austin. I love you." He said tiredly and I couldn't help but smile.
"Love you to Cole. Sleep tight."
He nodded and I turned off the light before walking downstairs.

I paced back and forth I was worried sick. I had no clue where Alan was and I was thinking the worst. He wasn't in the right state to be alone. I know I was jumping to conclusions but I couldn't help it. I was worried but I was still mad. He left Cole. Cole was so worried about people leaving him. I don't think anyone really realized that the twins were affected as they were by their dad leaving. Cole had a complete breakdown and he was only seven. The worst was Alan wasn't here and he was the only one Cole wanted at the moment. They needed each other.

I paced back and forth all night. I didn't sleep at all. I was too worried. I check on Cole constantly and he only woke up once and that was because he was crying.  Around six in the morning I was sitting on the couch with my head in my hands when the door opened. I jumped up and Alan stood in the door way. The keys to my car dropped from his hand and fell to the floor. He leaned against the wall and slid down slowly. Breaking into tears.
