Song- Genesis

Of all the things Draco had expected when he came up to the tower to think five days before his wedding, Blaire Zabini standing on the edge of it wasn't one of them.

"Blaire?" he whispered, although the name felt poisonous on his tongue. It didn't fit, it never had, Draco just hadn't bothered to notice. He had practiced whispering the name Blaise, and had realized it fit far better than Blaire ever had. He wished he had realized sooner.

Blaire winced upon the name Draco whispered, dark eyes opening to view him.

"Go away," she-he replied. "You don't want to see this."

"Please don't," Draco begged. "Please, you're one of my best friends in the world, I love you so much, please don't."

"This world isn't made for people like me, Draco."

"Please, Blaire-"

"See? You can't even call me by my name. You're tainted, ruined by society, unable to understand that you're in love with a boy, that your best friend isn't who you thought, that you don't have to fit into society. And I'm broken and ruined and I don't belong here and every second I'm around you it hurts because I love you so goddamn much and I can't be around you and I hate who I am, why couldn't I have been normal? I didn't deserve to be this... thing."

"You're not a thing, you're a person. Please, I'll call you Blaise all you want, please get away from the edge."

Blaise stared at him in wonder. "Say it again."

"Say what?"

"My name."

"Blaise."

Blaise smiled the saddest smile Draco had ever seen. "That sounds so beautiful coming from you."

"I wish I could have said it sooner."

"So do I."

"Please step down, Blaise."

"Do you think in a moment of panic, you would shout Blaise, or Blaire?" Blaise murmured, not stepping down from his place. Draco felt a rising panic as one foot moved backwards.

"Please don't do this, please don't, I'm begging you, you're my best friend, please, I can't do this without you, Blaise please."

Blaise looked down at the ground, and only then did Draco see the glint of tears in his eyes. "I can't, Draco. This world isn't made for fuck-ups like me."

"We'll make a new world," Draco begged. "For you, for me, for Pansy, for all those who never fit in. I'll shatter the world and build it again, I would do anything for you. Please. Please just step down."

"Promise me you won't marry Pansy."

"Blai-"

"Promise me, Draco. Promise me you won't marry Pansy, promise me you'll marry Harry, promise me you'll punish whoever killed Dean Thomas and Seamus Finnegan. Promise me you'll kill Theodore Nott for telling your father about me, for threatening to kill me, for hitting me over and over until I thought I was going to die in that moment."

Draco gasped. "Blai-"

"Promise me you'll show the world what happens to people like us, Draco."

Draco's eyes burned. His throat burned. His lungs burned. His heart burned.

"I...I promise."

Blaise opened his arms, closed his eyes, and fell backwards.

"Blaise!" Draco screamed, because not even for a second did the name Blaire run through his mind, because his best friend was a boy and his name was Blaise, and he was falling a hundred feet down.

He ran forward, leaning over the edge, desperately screaming as loud as he could as Blaise fell for what seemed like years.

He closed his eyes before he saw Blaise hit the ground, tears stinging, but his body was overtaken by sobs.

And then he heard the scream, and his body crumpled into tears.
