Chapter One
Percy's POV
I woke up to sunlight filtering through my cabin windows, shining on my face. I groaned quietly and covered my face with a pillow.
Fuck off Apollo.
He didn't listen, so I got up and shut the curtains myself. It was Saturday, so I didn't have to train or teach anything today. I smiled to myself as I buried myself back in my blankets, snuggling up to my pillow. I shut my eyes again when there was knocking at my door.
Of course. As soon as I get comfortable.
I let out another groan. "Go away! I'm tired!" I whined through the door.
"No, you need to get out of bed!" Annabeth called through the door.
"It's Saturday! I don't have anything to do today!"
"You have friends who miss you!" Annabeth yelled.
Well that's a surprise.
"Fine, fine, I'm getting up. Gimme a minute." I called out.
"Cool. Meet us at the dining pavilion!" She yelled.
I waited until she left before groaning and rolling out of bed- Literally. I hit the ground with a loud thud, accompanied by another groan that escaped as soon as my shoulder make contact with the solid wooden flooring. I stumbled up, using my bed as a support. I was still only in my boxers, and I couldn't go outside in that. One upright and now quite sturdy, I stumbled over to my dresser and grabbed a pair of jeans and a Camp Half-Blood T-shirt. I almost walked out the door before remembering I actually had to put the clothes on. Man I was not having a good morning.
Maybe Because you stared at a wall until 6am you dumbass.
(Oh yeah, there's going to be a lot of cussing/depressing stuff in this story. If you don't like it, the exit is either at the bottom of your phone or top left corner of your screen.)
I shook my head and quickly pulled on my jeans and T-shirt. I felt the familiar weight of Riptide join me in my pocket and took it out for a second. I uncapped it and watched the sword elongate from a pen to lethal weapon. I ran my fingertips lightly along the edge of the blade before capping it again. It had left a small cut on the edge of my fingers, not deep enough for blood, but it felt like a paper cut.
I sighed and put the pen back in my pocket. I put my shirt on and walked over to the door, my stability much higher now. I unlocked it, a new security upgrade, and walked out into the blinding sun towards the Dining Pavilion. From where I was I could hear our loud group, consisting of the Seven, Nico and Will.
They were all sitting at the Poseidon table, like we did every morning. My dad didn't seem to care, so we just did it before breakfast. It was currently seven, from what I took from the sun, and breakfast wasn't for another hour.
I walked up to the table and plopped down on the picnic table, and everyone's head turned to face me. "You look dead." Leo noted.
"Gee, thanks." I grumbled, resting arms on the table then setting my head on top of my arms so I was facing the table.
"Dude, are you okay?" Jason asked. I felt a hand on my shoulder but I shrugged it off.
"Fine. Just tired." I replied.
"Are you sure? I don't think I've ever seen you this tired before." Annabeth said.
"Ugh, I'm fine guys." I groaned, followed by a loud yawn.
"What time did you get to bed last night?" Piper asked.
"Um, I don't know." I mumbled. I knew exactly what time it was, but I can't tell them I stared at a wall for eight hours straight.
"Did you have a nightmare?" Annabeth pressed.
"Oh my gods guys, no I didn't have a nightmare. I'm just tired, alright?" I asked.
There was an awkward silence. "You're not acting like you this morning." Hazel noted quietly.
"No fucking way." I grumbled, not intending for anyone to hear.
"Dude, did you just cuss? Cause you never swear." Jason asked warily.
"Fuck off Grace." I groaned. "I'm tired. Leave me alone."
Another short silence. "Alright, I'm taking him to the infirmary. Anyone wanna come?" Annabeth asked, getting up.
"I'm fine, gods people. Can I not be tired?" I asked.
"Um, no. It's not that you're tired. You're acting a lot different." Annabeth said matter of factly.
"It's because I'm tired for gods sake!" I exclaimed.
"Nope, up you go." Annabeth said, grabbing one of my arms.
"Nope, I'm sitting here." I grumbled, tearing my arm away.
"Jason, a little help?" Annabeth asked.
"Grace, if you so much as touch me I will bite your entire fucking arm off." I growled. I was NOT in the mood this morning. Then again, I didn't get any longer than an hour of sleep.
"Um..." Jason said nervously. "I don't think I should."
"Just do it, he's not going to literally bite you." Annabeth told him.
"Don't doubt me." I grumbled. Who am I kidding? That's all they do.
"Jason!" Annabeth pleaded.
I lifted my head from my arms and stood, backing away from the group. "I'm fine, I told you. I'm just tired! I didn't get much sleep so I'm tired! Is that a crime!?" I yelled.
Everyone looked at me weirdly. "What?" I asked.
"Alright, fine. Fine." Annabeth sat back down. "But you're going to bed early tonight."
"Fine by me." I agreed, sitting back down next to Jason.
Great. Now I can stare at a wall for even longer! Yippee.
I rested my head back down and felt my eyes start to droop. Sleep would be bliss right now...
"Percy? Percy! Percy wake up!" Someone yelled, shaking my shoulder.
I groaned and opened my eyes, only to see a picnic table. Oh. I must have fallen asleep. I lifted my head and rubbed my eyes. "What?" I grumbled, blinking my eyes to clear some black dots.
"You fell asleep, so we let you sleep. But you slept all the way through breakfast." Annabeth said worriedly. "Are you okay? Like, for real?"
"I did?" I grumbled. "Oh. Oops."
"Um, Chiron wanted you too take over a class today because the other guy was sick, but I can tell him you can't if you-"
I cut Annabeth off. "I'll go, sword training right?" I asked.
Annabeth nodded slowly. "Yeah. Are you sure you're good?"
"I'm fine Wise Girl." I got up and gave her a quick kiss before heading towards the battle arena.
I only stumbled a few times before I got there, and saw my class waiting. "Sorry, I was informed about the change late. Everyone grab a sword that's level to your hand." I spoke loud enough for all of the tiny campers to hear.
They scurried around, trying swords. One came up to me with a sniffle, I think it was an Apollo kid. "I can't find one that fits." He said.
"It's okay, I'll help you okay?" I asked, pushing myself off of the wall. Except I pushed to hard.
I stumbled forward and held my arms out for balance, wobbling on my feet a bit before steadying myself. "My gods I'm tired." I muttered.
I lead the younger camper, who was probably ten, over to the sword rack. I found one that looked about his size and helped him grab it. "Cool! Thanks Percy!" He exclaimed, running over to his friends.
I walked over to the group and pulled out Riptide. "Right, who wants to go first?" I asked.
Everyone looked between each other nervously. They were a class group ranged from 7-12, so I guess going against an eighteen year old two time savior of Olympus was a bit scary.
"I will only fight at your level and I wont hurt you, I promise. I'm just going to show you some fighting techniques." I assured them. No one budged for a bit before a kid, about nine, stepped forward.
"I'll go." He said boldly.
I smiled at him. "Good. Now, get into your fighting stance."
He nodded, looking a little bit less confident with each second. "Hey, don't doubt yourself. It will only make yourself worse. But don't be cocky either, that can lower your game as well." I told him. He nodded and smiled at me, getting into a pretty good fighting stance.
"Good job- Um, what's your name?" I asked.
"Alex!" He said proudly.
"Good job Alex, but I'm going to adjust you a little bit okay?" I asked. He nodded.
I got down on my knees and adjusted his arm posture. "You want to be high and ready to swing, the tip of the blade to about your shoulder." I told him. "And you legs should be shoulder length apart, your left foot in front of your right if you're a righty and the opposite if you're a lefty." I told him.
He nodded and stuck his tongue out slightly, adjusting his position. "Very good. Now," I took out Riptide and got into a blocking stance. "Swing at me."
He bit his bottom lip and swung. He hesitated though, so the blade veered off course and towards my face. I blocked it when it was an inch from my face. He dropped the sword and brought his hands to his face. "I'm so, so, so sorry!" He shouted.
"Hey, it's alright. They're is a reason they hired me to train you, I can block when accidents like that happen." I told him, guiding his hands away from his face. "But lesson one, never, ever hesitate. Whatever you swing at me I'll block, so don't worry about hurting me."
He nodded, looking a little more confident. "Now, get into the stance I showed you and swing when you're ready, okay?" I asked.
I was lucky I blocked that, I honestly have no idea how. All I know is I'm getting more and more tired by the minute. He picked up his sword and got into his fighting stance. I got into a blocking position. "GO whenever you're ready." I reminding him.
He nodded and swung an nice, steady blow. I blocked and it send vibrations up my arms. It felt very... Soothing. And it made me even more tired. "Very-" I started, then stumbled back for a second. A lot of kids looked startled. "Good Alex." I muttered.
"Um, Percy sir? Are you okay?" Alex asked nervously.
"I..." I hesitated for some reason. "Don't think so."
Alex's POV
"I..." Percy hesitated before finishing his sentence. "Don't think so."
He swayed dangerously for a second, then passed out. A lot of kids screamed when he fell and hit the dirt, hard. I tried to calm them all down when a bunch of older teens and Chiron ran in. "Percy!" the girl I recognized as Annabeth screamed.
They all ran over and knelt besides him. "Is he okay? What happened?" Annabeth asked frantically.
"Um, he was just training me. I took a swing and he seemed to get really tired. Then he just.... Fell." I explained hurriedly.
Her eyebrows creased in worry. "Okay. You guys can go have a free time today. Put your swords back and run along."
We nodded and all ran over to put our swords away.
Annabeth's POV
After Alex explained what happened, I turned back to the others who were crowding the unconscious Percy. "He's just sleeping, so that's good." Will said, pressing down on his wrist. "But his pulse is really slow. I think he needs to go to the infirmary."
We all nodded and helped Percy get onto Chiron's back, then helped steady him so he didn't fall off while Chiron trotted to the infirmary. Prior we were talking about Percy's behavior when we heard a bunch of screams from the battle arena, and we thought someone had gotten hurt, but it turns out Percy had passed out.
Jason and each grabbed one of Percy's arms, slinging them around our shoulders once we got him on the ground in front of the infirmary. A small whispering crowd had started to gather around us, but Chiron stamped one of his hooves. "Leave. This doesn't concern any of you."
The crowds left, but grumbling complaints. We carried Percy into the infirmary, setting him down on a cot Will had prepared for him. For the first time I studied Percy's face, as he had hidden it the entire time while sleeping. He had bags under his eye and his skin seemed less tan than usual. It was slightly unsettling.
Will ran around, checking his blood pressure, pulse, all that stuff while the rest of us frowned down at Percy. I don't know why he's acting like this, but I hope it'll change.
"Good news or bad news?" Will finally asked after about half an hour.
"Good?" I asked hesitantly.
"Good news, he's going to live."
"Obviously." I muttered under my breath. "Bad news?"
"Um..." He shoved his hands into his lab coat pockets and looked at the ground. "Percy hasn't slept any more than two hours this entire week."
I blinked, not sure I heard him right. "Two hours?"
Will nodded his head. "Not including today. His eyes-" He walked over and lifted Percy's eyelid, to reveal the whites of his eyes. "Are extremely dry, like he didn't blink for hours at a time. If it had been more than two hours ago, they would have regained their moisture. His haven't."
"So you're saying Percy stared at something without blinking for hours instead of sleeping?" Jason asked, not sounding quite so sure.
"That's probably what is happening, yes." Will agreed, nodding his head. "His body is shutting down after so long without sleep, and his body is functioning slower. He may not wake up for a few days, until he's caught up with himself."
I sighed and looked down at him. "Why, Seaweed Brain?" I whispered, brushing a strand of hair from his face. I leaned down and kissed him lightly before pulling away.
His lips were cold as ice.
