Prologue
I sigh, removing the hair band and allowing my hair to fall freely past my shoulders. I have to look perfect. I turn to my fiancé who has been watching me for the last two hours.
"Up or down?"
"Down. Are you sure you're up for this? I mean, owning a real estate business is hard enough as it is, much less a woman owning one"
I glare at him. I've heard this lecture far too many times over the past year. Ever since I first mentioned wanting to run my own business. My parents had, and it's something that I'd always wanted as a child. Yet he just can not see my vision as I do. I walk over to where he leans against the doorway.
"Of course, I can do this. My dad taught me everything he knows- he knew. He would want me to go for this and that's what I'm going to do. With or without your support, but I would be happier if you had my back through this Michael"
Michael sighs down at me before nodding. He looks me up and down frowning.
"Are you really going to wear that? Is it not a bit much?"
Looking into the mirror I see nothing wrong with the black pencil skirt, white shirt, black blazer and black heels I'm wearing, and I retrieve my handbag from the wardrobe that had been the sole reason I wanted to purchase this house. I laugh. When it comes to indulging myself in shopping, I'm far worse than mum. I did not inherit dad's self control. Heck why should I? I earn my money and pay my bills. What harm is the odd pair of shoes or handbag?
"If I want the bank to take me seriously then I have to look the part. I want this business to work without asking mum for a handout. This way I can to some extent to do it on my on. Come on Michael we've been through this already"
"I don't see why you don't just use the money your dad left you. Why do you just leave it sitting there gaining dust? Metaphorically god damn it woman, there's no need to smirk at me like that"
He sulks pulling away from me. This again?
"Look I haven't got time to argue about this again. We'll talk later. How do I look?"
He frowns slightly before kissing my forehead.
"You look beautiful. Same as always", he looks at me and sighs "Stop that. You don't need to worry. You've been practising what to say for days in front of that damned mirror. I swear that thing gets more attention from you than I do. Just smile, say what you have to and be grateful they gave you the time to ask for the loan"
It's only then I realise my bottom lip is trapped beneath my teeth. It's a habit I inherited from mum. Michael isn't the best person with words, but he knows me well.
"See, this is why I agreed to marry you. You always know exactly what is on my mind"
I grab my car keys, kiss Michael on his cheek before leaving. My heart has started doing jumping jacks in my chest. God, I have never felt so nervous about anything. I need this. This could be the start of a huge life change.
