Logistics Of It All
Lexi's POV
"What?!"
"You mean the alpha's son???"
"Xavier? The Xavier who went out with Elise?"
Everyone was shocked and were looking at me for confirmation. "I don't see what the big deal is. It's just Xavier Black." Mom looks at me like I said something weird, "Sweetie, he's the alpha's son."
"So?" I am genuinely confused. Malcolm tries to clarify, "I think what mom is getting at, is Xavier is going to be the next alpha after graduation. Meaning, as his true mate, you, would be the next Luna." Me? Luna? What???
"I must bring this up with Alpha Black." We are all reminded of the doctor's presence in the room, and before he could leave, Malcolm blocks the door. Malcolm, being a warrior and beta in training, easily towers over the doctor. "Hold on a second doc. We're not done yet. We didn't even get your name, it would be rude to leave before we know who you are."
I'm not even sure what Malcolm was doing. But I was most definitely sure, we couldn't tell the Alpha family just yet. It was obvious that you hadn't even told your parents yet, they must have thought Elise was your mate all along. I wonder what they thought when she left you?
"It's Williams. Please step aside, I must report this to the Alpha."
"You won't be reporting anything, doctor Williams. If you walk out of this room and breathe a word of this to the alpha, you won't see the light of the day." Malcolm growls. Doctor Williams cowers and bares his neck in submission. "Yes sir." Doctor Williams nods his head repeatedly and quickly. Malcolm then hastily pushes Doctor Williams out the door.
"Good. Now that that's settled. Lexi? The floor is yours once again."
"Uh, well I'm not sure what I'm supposed to say. What do you guys want to know?"
"When did you find out he was your mate, pumpkin?" Dad asks. I guess it would make sense to start at the beginning. "I knew when it hit midnight, at that party Mom made Malcolm take me to. He was still with Elise at the time. I have known for months now." I look down at my lap, suddenly interested in the stitching of the white hospital blanket.
Bam! "I'm killing him. He's dead. Lying sack of shit. I knew it!" Loyalty and trust was everything to Malcolm, and for you to have crossed that line it's gonna be hella difficult to get back in his good graces.
Malcolm punches the wall with his fist, if this was a regular human hospital the wall would have a gaping hole in it. Luckily, this hospital is specifically built for werewolves in case they were to become emotional and needed to lash out. "Malcolm! You can't he's my mate." No matter how much you hurt me, I can't find it in myself to hate you. I think I might love him. I don't know what to do.
"Lexi, mate or not. He hurt you. Mates are sacred. You just don't do that! You don't pick someone else over your true mate! It's direct defiance against the moon goddess herself! It is treason! He deserves some form of punishment." Malcolm growls angrily.
"Aren't you taking this a little far?" I ask getting slightly frustrated at Malcolm, "It's not like he's your mate. It's not your decision to make."
"He was my best friend first, he could have told me! He should have! That asshole means nothing to me. From here on out, I only follow orders and do pack business with that asshat. He stays the fuck away from my family. " Malcolm's voice threatening and curt.
"Son, take a seat. We're as frustrated as you are." Dad says calmly and ushers Malcolm in one of the chairs in the room.
"Lexi, honey." Mom speaks up standing beside Dad, "Your brother is right, at least about the council. The council will not take this lightly. It is a very serious matter."
She moves closer to me, holding my hand, "Had you died, there would have been an investigation and since you are a Beta's daughter there would be questions concerning your death. If Alpha Black ever thought of trying to conceal the truth behind your death, which I doubt he would have done, he would have been stripped of his title and seen as corrupt. Their whole blood line would have been removed from the Alpha position. They would have elected another blood line to replace the Blacks. Especially since you would have been, well will be, the future Luna. Mates are very scared as your brother says." It's a lot of information to take in. The head council, an elder group that follows orders from the moon goddess and governs all packs, would go to that extent? All for true mates?
"I see the look on your face, dear." Dad takes over upon seeing my confused facial expression, "Your mother and Malcolm are spot on. Mates are hand selected by the moon goddess herself and by denying your mate without reason, should it result in death there will be some form of punishment. There is no acceptable reason why anyone would reject their mate. Unless both mates already settled down and the bond is nonexistent as their wolves had already made the move long ago by allowing themselves to be mated by another other than their true mate."
God this is a lot of information to take in. It's giving me a headache, I'm tired as is. "I get the picture. I can't protect him even if I wanted to, can I?" I sigh.
"We're sorry sweetheart but that's how it has to be. We understand how much you care about him, but he has to pay the consequences." Mom's voice full of sympathy as if understanding my wishes to not hurt my mate. No matter how awful it's been for me.
"Ugh." Malcolm who finally calmed down chuckles beside me and ruffles my unruly hair. "It's gonna be fine. As much as I hate that guy right now, he's tough as nails." I hope to the moon goddess herself that you're right.
At that moment we all heard a knock at the door, "Hello?" That voice it's so familiar. But I can't put my tongue on whose it is.
"Come in, the doors open." Malcolm responds back to the voice. I ever so lightly slapped him on the chest, "as the patient of this room, I'm pretty sure I should be the one inviting people in or not. Who knows who that is, huh?" He just laughs. I roll my eyes in response.
The door opened ever so slowly as if the person behind it was afraid to step in. "Never mind dude, head back out. Her highness said no." Malcolm is full on joking. A huge grin plastered on his face, a stark contrast to his earlier display of tears.
"Actually I didn't say no." I stuck my tongue out at him. It was his turn to roll his eyes.
"So can I come in or not?" Whoever this is, it was like I could hear the grin in their voice, it's completely contagious.
"Hurry it up already." I was dying to know who it is behind that voice. The mysterious person who seemed so familiar to me.
In steps a tall ridiculously handsome muscular man, for some reason I can't remember him. "I am here to check on the status of the queen." Whoever he is, he keeps up the charade, even going as far as to bow. As he moves to stand by my bedside, opposite from my family, I stare up at him curiously. Who are you? Why don't I recognize you?
He grasps my hand in his, lifting my knuckles to his lips leaving a small lingering kiss. I gasp slightly as I feel even the slightest spark from his touch. What the heck. He flashes me the biggest and brightest grin I have ever seen, "How are you, my majesty?" I don't say a word, the feeling remains. He lets go and it disappears. Just as a frown is making its appearance on my face, it disappears as he puts his palm on my forehead. The feeling comes back.
"Lexi? Are you alright? Should we get the doctor?" I immediately grasp his wrist when he begins to move away to call a doctor. He looks at me and my face completely flushes red. I abruptly release my grip. "S-sorry." He just chuckles and for some odd reason I can't help but feel addicted to the sound. What's happening?
"It's fine, I'll be back with the doctor. No worries, I'm not disappearing or anything." Again he gives me this godly smile of his, before he makes his way out the door. I'm stuck in a trance.
"Ahem." I turn to look at my brother who has this cheeky grin on his face. "What?" He wiggles his eyebrows, "Shut up." He starts cracking up. I look for our parents to help with him, but they're fast asleep on the other available bed in the room. I look back at Malcolm and slap his arm to get him to stop laughing, "What time is it?" He pulls out his phone and shows me the screen, it's three in the morning. Wow. "Aren't you tired?" I can see the underlying eyebags on my brother's face, were they always there?
"I'm fine." Malcolm laughs and pats me on the head, "You need to rest. He'll be back soon." I lay down on my side, my brother's hand in my grasp, "I love you baby sis." Those are the last words I hear as I drift off to sleep.
