[15] Why Wouldn't I Be Okay?

A/N Edited.

Wade's POV

"Mom! Stop embarrassing me," I muttered as I looked at her with wide warning eyes. It was already past 10:50 PM and look where this dinner's getting me to.

The dinner started at around 8 PM and up until now, these mothers don't know what else to talk about other than the lives of their sons and daughters and its basic screw-ups.

We were at the building rooftop and my parents had to attend this dinner since it was a potential investor interested in a partnership with Dad's company. I sighed as I looked around. Fairy lights hung across the transparent roof with garden plants all around the place. I grip my coat tighter as the cold night breeze of New York swings by.

"I'll just go to the restroom, Mom," I mumbled as I stood up giving them a polite smile before taking off. It was a dreadful evening, with my parents being sucked up at every person they meet, I had to put on a fake smile all day.

If only I had convinced my parents to take princess to come with us to do her job, I wouldn't be wallowing in boredom. I bet she's at home watching movies. Scratch that, I know she's at home watching movies. I didn't know she would stay at home alone and that her parents were on a business trip as well.

Suddenly, like something came over me, I was starting to get a bad feeling. An instinct that something bad is going to happen. I should check if she's okay.

I fish out my phone from my coat's pocket and dialed her. I hope she answers. At least, I would know that she's okay and that she's her usual self.

"What?" I could sense the suspicion in her voice. I hadn't heard this voice in two days. Damn, I didn't know I actually missed her now that I called her.

I woke up from my thoughts and replied, "Well hello to you too," smiling because it was her. She was fine. Thank god, I sighed in relief.

"What do you need? You wouldn't be calling me in the middle of the freakin' night for nothing," she said and I could feel that she was already rolling her eyes while saying this statement.

"Well, I figured you would be having a movie marathon so you would be awake and I thought I'd check in," I said in one breath. Seriously Wade?

Why be such a p---

Shut it, you bitchy brain!

You're calling your own brain bitchy. Way to go. You've done this a thousand times to other girls so why become all nervous about it?

Because she's not like other girls! I should really stop talking to you, buddy. I wonder if Jess also has her, um, brain. I shudder at that.

"How did you know I'm having a movie marathon? And checking what?" You should've been more specific, Wade Johnson! Look now, she's asking what you're checking.

"If you're okay," I replied smoothly like it was the most obvious thing in the world. All I wanted to do is to hear her voice, goddamit! She didn't reply. Oh my god, why is my heart beating faster. Did I say something wrong? Did I do something wrong?

I could hear her chuckle and ask, "Why wouldn't I be okay?"

"I just had a bad feeling, that's all," I said. I sighed in relief but was still uneasy. Honestly speaking, I did had it but the bad feeling didn't all go away.

"So what's up?" she asked and I was just thinking of telling her how annoying my mother is tonight. I chuckled at that thought. She seemed quiet for a long time and I could hear metals and other noises rumbling in the background. What was she even doing anyway? Maybe it's from the movie she was watching.

"Uh, hello? Are you still there?"

"Yeah? I'm just going in the kitchen to get more food." There's something definitely wrong. Her voice is strangely quiet and that's not the usual Jessi at home. I know because she is always loud.

"Okay....so, um..." I start, planning to tell her how big it is that she missed to come here and watch me get humiliated in front of my parents' investors.

"Just get to the point already." I hear more noises from the background. I furrow my eyebrows to get a hold of the things happening. You know, analyzing with my ear and whatnot. It was in that korean drama, Voice. Shit, Mom watching those is rubbing on me.

"Oh...you know my mom, being one and all, had the decency to embarrass me in front of her investors! I would never show my face in there ever ag––," I say, recalling the events that happened today. My horrible experience came to an abrupt stop when I hear heavy footsteps. I think I heard something like something slapping on something and crashing......Did that sound like a frying pan? Maybe she invited her friends over. Nah, that's impossible, there should be girly voices. But I hear none.

Look at you playing detective, analyzing this.

Shut up.

"Princess?" No response. "Hello? Jessi? Princess! Cupcake! Hello?! Jessica!! Cupcake! Jessica Parker, you answer me right now!!" Still no response. I could hear something clashing on the ground.

"Jessi?! Princess, are you there?!" I shout, worried. One moment she's okay, then the next second she's not. My palms started to sweat and my heartbeat quickened as I heard shuffling and sounds of things falling off the floor.

Holy crap! There is something going on.

"Jessi! What the hell happened?!" I yell as I hear someone pick up the phone and a little static like it was placed on something.

"Oh I just accidentally lost my grip of the frying pan that I was going to put in the dishwasher and it fell," she replied chuckling. I could sense there was more to that and I would definitely not let it pass.

There is really more to that. "You're lying," I blurted out and I got a silent response. I waited for 5 seconds and still no response. Oh no, this again.

"Please tell me you're still there," I prayed as I hear again suspicious muffling, clashing and thud sounds. Again, no reply.

Fuck it. I'm driving over there. I strode my way to the dining room where my parents are now talking about crazy monkeys stealing purses on the border of China when we had our family vacation before.

"I'm going home, Mom," I said clenching my teeth as I fish out my phone for the nearest plane schedule from NYC to CA.

"What's the rush?" my mom inquired.

"I need to go home, see you at home?" I said as I kissed the top of her head. She nods and gives me a look that says I need to explain all of this later. I give her a smile, but all I can think about is going to Jessi's house and checking up on her.

I sat down in the boarding area while waiting for the staff to instruct the people to start entering the plane. Remembering something, I check my contacts and looked for Martha's or Mark's number. Good thing I had Mark's number. I quickly dialed it and I hope he picks the fuck up.

"Hello?" Mark's bored voice answered. "Can you see if Jessica's at home? She isn't answering any of my calls earlier," I quickly replied.

"Hold on a sec," Mark replied as I heard him talk to Martha. After a few minutes of silence and keyboard clacking, "She's not answering her phone, did you guys fight? Because if you did, you shouldn't get us involved," Mark jokingly said. I was not in the mood for jokes. "I was talking to her earlier. But then I heard shuffling sounds and banging noise on the wooden floor in the background. Then the call ended. The call cannot be reached after," I explained.

"Oh shit," I heard Martha exclaim and more keyboard sounds. "She has the agency app, it was a good thing that there was a new update. You could track an agent using that app. That is if she brought her phone with her," Mark said.

"I got her location. She isn't home, she's at ---," Martha's voice cut off. "The Santa Monica Pier," She muttered as I heard more typing sounds. "We should contact the secondary agent. This is not good," She dreadfully said.

"Wade, I want you to stay where you are. We got it from here, we wouldn't want you to get involved," Mark emphasized. Too late. Just on cue, my flight just started boarding. I'm going to find you, Jessica. Just wait for me.

Jessica's POV

Maybe this was the part where I die and nobody would know – my body would be missing for weeks before they actually discover my remains. I couldn't get a good look at where I was since my head was wrapped in black cloth, but I could definitely detect a metallic smell and saltwater.

Ew. Is it wrong I'm choosy at where I am while kidnapped? I mean, probably. Atleast leave me somewhere clean.

I was now sure I was somewhere by the seaside. I didn't actually feel that nervous because I knew that Martha and Mark would easily track me since these idiots brought my phone with them. They thought that if they sent threatening texts to my family, it would get them riled up. They couldn't be more wrong.

But all I know is that I really did need backup.
