Chapter 23 -- Boat
"Come in!" Michael called.
I opened the door at the same time I heard a high pitched scream.
"Don't look over here, I'm naked!" Calum cried, except I couldn't not look when he shouted like that, but he was only on his phone, nonchalantly sitting on the floor under the window, looking as calm as could be.
"What's wrong with you?"
"Vi, you looked! What if I really had been naked?"
"You're so stupid." Michael and I said at the same time. We looked at each other and smiled as Calum pouted.
"You're mean."
"How are you feeling?" Sammi asked quietly. I looked over at her, to find her and Luke cuddled on the bed closest to the door. Luke still had his eyes closed, but there's no way he could be asleep with all the screaming going on. His hair was smushed against his pillow and he was drooling. Maybe he was still asleep. Sammi was running her fingers through his hair.
I smirked at her and she shook her head.
"I'm fine," I decided to leave her alone about it—for now. "Took some drugs so my little headache is gone by now."
"That's good," she replied, looking down at the sleeping boy in her arms and tousling his hair.
"I heard you had quite the wild morning, Vi," Michael said. He was sprawled out over one of the chairs by the dresser which was across from the beds. Sarah was lying on an air mattress tucked in between the two beds.
"Yeah, Ashton woke me up early to watch the sun rise on the roof and we got drunk on mimosas."
"Ashton got drunk on mimosas?" Michael asked dubiously.
"No...It was just me."
He laughed.
"Hey," Calum whined, looking at Michael. "How come you never do romantic shit like that for me?"
Michael shook his head.
"Because we aren't dating, idiot. You have a girlfriend, and I'm the one who's bi. You're not even gay."
"Oh, right." Calum nodded, like he'd forgotten his sexuality for a moment and needed Michael to remind him. "You could still be cute to me if you wanted to, though. I wouldn't mind."
Well, that certainly answered my questions from yesterday.
Calum winked at me and waved me over to sit with him. I realized I was still standing by the door, having been too preoccupied to take a seat when I first arrived.
I sat down on the floor and opened my laptop.
"Do we want to do a group activity today?" I turned to Cal and asked. He nodded.
"I think that'd be fun. What do you have?"
I opened the travel drive I created and looked under 'day activities--whole group' to see what was on the list.
"We could go to the Empire State Building, take a ferry tour to the Statue of Liberty, we could spend the day in Central Park,"
"What's a ferry?" Michael asked, leaning his back over the armrest so he was looking at us upside down over the edge of the chair.
"It's like a giant boat. Kinda like a yacht, except strip it of all the fanciness and put in a couple benches so people can sit. It's a transport boat."
"I like boats." Michael said.
"One vote for Statue of Liberty," I noted, looking at the rest of the list. "We could visit any of the museums, like the MET or the Natural History Museum. They're pretty close to each other so we could do one for a couple hours and then hit the other later and then get dinner. What do you think?" I addressed the room in general.
"BOOOOOOATTTT." Michael groaned, sounding much like the foghorn on a boat.
"I got it, Mike. Thanks."
He flashed me a cheeky smile and a thumbs up before grabbing a book from a bag near his feet and opening it.
"I'd like to see the museums." Sammi said.
I nodded, looking at the list.
"That might be better on a day where we get an earlier start, it's already almost noon and we're still here. I want to make sure we get the full experience there. Unless we only want to do one today, which we could do."
Sammi shook her head, keeping her voice low so she didn't disturb Luke.
"Whatever you think is best. I know we'll get to go, it doesn't really matter when."
I'm glad for the most part everyone in this group is pretty easy-going.
"What do you think would be best?" Calum asked me.
"Can we please go to the Empire State Building?" Luke said. Everyone looked over at him, not even realizing he'd been awake and coherent.
"I didn't know you were awake," Sammi said, hesitantly shifting slightly away from him.
"I didn't want you to stop playing with my hair," he muttered, sliding into the space she'd created between them.
"You could have just asked," she giggled, resuming with the tiny braid she'd been making in his hair. He chuckled.
"Wouldn't have been as fun."
"You want to see the Empire State Building, Luke?"
"So badly. I can't wait to get all the way up there. Did you know there's a restaurant?"
"Okay, well we could do that then."
"But...boat." Michael whimpered, sitting up in his chair. He threw a wounded look at me. "You promised me a boat, Vi, I wanted a boat."
"You stop that, I did nothing of the sort." I snapped and his eyes widened.
"Sorry." He grinned and I rolled my eyes.
"We can do everything you guys want, we just have to plan it out." I opened a doc and started figuring out if we could manage to do both of them in one afternoon or if we wouldn't have time.
"Okay, if we leave in about half an hour we can make it to the Statue of Liberty for the ferry ride around Ellis Island, and then we can go to the Empire State Building and go there for dinner. How does that sound?"
"Will we have enough time for all of that in one day, Vi?"
"We should, the ferry ride isn't even an hour and it'll give us time to hang out around there for a bit. Once you're in the observation tower of the Empire State Building, there's not that much to do besides take some pictures. Then it'll be time for dinner so we can do early dinner and then go out somewhere."
"We've got to go swing dancing," Luke said as the door opened and Ashton walked in.
"I heard swing dancing, I'm already in," He said, locating me immediately and making his way over. He laid down on the ground in front of me on his stomach and set his head in his palms so he could look at me. "You look beautiful today," he said, then turned around to look at Luke. "When's dancing?"
Calum sighed, interrupting Luke's response.
"Michael, how come you never compliment me like that? Ashton had no prompting, he just said it because he truly believes it. What am I doing wrong?" he fake sobbed.
I put my arm around him.
"It's okay, Calum. He's just really bad at expressing his feelings. I want you to know that I think you're beautiful. He's a fool for not reminding you every day." I tell him and he nods.
"Thank you, you truly have no idea what that means to me."
"What did I miss?" Sarah asked, sitting up in bed and looking at everyone. Her hair was stuck to her cheek and she yawned loudly. Apparently she'd been taking a nap.
"Calum's flirting with Michael." Ashton filled her in.
"Again," Luke added.
She nodded slowly before getting up and going to the bathroom.
"I'll tell you you're beautiful if you want, Cali." Michael scoffed, rolling his eyes.
"It is what I want, but I want you to mean it, not just do it because I asked."
I rolled my eyes.
"All right, that's enough for now. Is anyone opposed to going out dancing tonight?" I asked.
"No, no, not dancing, Vi, swing dancing."
"Yes, okay, fine. I'll look up swing dancing in New York City. I'm sure there's something."
"Oh, I got it," Luke said. "I already have a place in mind. We've gotta check out Brooklyn Swings, yeah, Ash?"
"Hell yeah, buddy." Ashton looked over at me. "Is that something that we could do tonight?"
I was already googling it, and the dance started at 9.
"We could probably do that if everyone's okay with it." I told them, adding it to the days itinerary and pulling the address off the website.
"Yes!" Luke cheered. "Man, Elle and the rest of the club are going to be so jealous."
"I know, do you think Robby Black or Michelle and Evan will be there?"
The boys went off to talk about famous dancers they hoped might attend the event and I got everything settled and texted it to the group.
"Okay, so it's 11:53 right now, if we leave here by 1:00 with everyone having eaten before that, we can make it to the Statue of Liberty by 2 for the ferry, we can spend a bit of time there and head to the Empire State Building by 6:00 to look around and get dinner. Then we'll head to dance for the rest of the night. Sound good to everyone?" Sarah had emerged from the bathroom during the swing dance talk and everyone nodded in agreement for the plans.
"Thanks, Vi." Ashton kissed my cheek and got up. "I'm going to go grab us lunch. How does a sandwich sound?"
"Sounds good, thanks."
"I'll be back. Mikey, you gonna come?"
"For food? I'd do anything." He hopped up out of his chair and followed Ashton outside.
"Mikey, get me a turkey sandwich or I'm going to eat half of yours, babe." Calum called as Michael gave him the middle finger and walked out the door.
I stayed and talked to Calum while Michael and Ashton got food for the four of us. Luke and Sammi went to get pizza and Sarah just had a power bar, since she had taken advantage of the hotel breakfast when everyone else was sleeping.
Ashton and Michael came back with our food and we brought it back up to our room since Sammi, Sarah, and Luke needed to shower and get ready. We didn't want to be in their way.
After we ate, we went downstairs and waited in the lobby for everyone to join us, and then we were off.
