The Spider Bite (Taking Up The Mantle)

It was dark out. You could barely see in front of you. You tried calling out to anyone who could hear you, but no one responded. What unsettled you most was that the only sound was your voice. There were no cars, no people, no nothing.

Y/n: "Where is everyone?"

"Y/n! Y-Y/n! Help! Please!"

Your head snaps around to look behind you, but you saw nothing. However, you recognized the voice.

Y/n: "Peter! I'm coming!"

You turn around and run towards where you heard your cousin's voice. He kept on calling out to you and you called back as you ran. However, you barely moved an inch. No matter how hard you ran, you stayed in place as if the universe wanted Peter Parker to die.

Peter: "Y/n! Help! Plea--GACK!"

A sickening snap made you stop in place. Then the sound of a body thumping to the floor makes your heart pound as it echoes through the darkness. You call out to him.

Y/n: "Peter?"

And again.

Y/n: "Peter?!"

And yet there was no answer. You fall to your knees as tears pour down your face. You couldn't save him. You couldn't save your hero. It felt like he was right there, but yet again he was so far out of reach. You sobbed as you began spewing out apologies to your dead cousin, knowing you'll never get a response from him again. Heavy footsteps gain your attention, but you didn't look up even when a large purple hand rested itself on your shoulder.

"I understand my child... Better than anyone."

You look up to see Thanos looking down at you. His lips were curled down into a somber frown as his eyes were filled with sadness. However, you didn't sympathize or empathize with him. You only mustered the angriest scowl you could and glare at the Mad Titan with nothing but rage and hatred.

Y/n: "You could never..."

Thanos: "I lost more than you could ever know. But do not worry. I will reunite you with your kin soon enough."

Y/n: "What...?"

Before you could react, the genocidal warlord grabbed your neck and lifted you up into the air. You wheeze and gasp for air, the feeling of your throat being tightly squeezed with all oxygen being cut from your lungs. You were dying. You knew it. What else could this be?

You were terrified. You didn't want to die like this. You wanted to see Peter and your mother again before that happened. But this was how it goes. Without anybody by your side except Thanos, who was the one killing.

Thanos: "Everything is going to be okay, Y/n. It is time to wake up."

You gasp for air again as you feel life fall away from you. Darkness was slowly entering your vision as you slowly died.

Thanos: "It's time to wake up."

"Y/n, wake up, man!"

You gasp as you jolt awake. You spin your head all around to see that you were sitting in a bus seat. You could hear Harry's voice trying to calm you down.

Harry: "Hey, hey. Calm down, man. Your on the bus, remember? We're going to Alchemax for a field trip. Remember?"

You breathe a bit and lean back on the seat. You nod a bit and Gwen turns around to look at you from the seat in front of you.

Gwen: "You good, bug boy? Sounded like a bad dream."

Y/n: "Yeah, it was."

Bug boy. That was Gwen's nickname for you, mainly because you have a fascination for spiders and arachnids. You never told her exactly why you did, always telling a half-truth with a "They're just super cool". However, it was because Peter was Spider-Man and you researched a whole bunch of spiders because of him. You were about eleven around the time you started research on spiders, just a few months before you and May discovered your cousin was a superhero. You guess the fascination just stuck with you.

Man, you can still remember the stern lecture your mother gave Peter when she found out he was Spider-Man. He was grounded for two whole months.

Harry: "Was it Peter?"

Y/n: "And Thanos."

Gwen: "Isn't that grape-headed bastard dead or something?"

Y/n: "Yeah. Thor killed him."

Gwen: "How do you know that?"

Y/n: "Natasha Romanoff is my legal guardian, remember?"

Gwen: "Oh, right."

Gwen laughs a bit, and you smile. She always had such a nice laugh.

It's been about a month since you and Harry befriended Gwen, and she was actually extremely really cool. She was super smart, funny as hell, and has that attitude that says "don't fuck with me", and her dad's a cop. Captain of the NYPD, really. Taught her how to fight and use a gun. He was cool.

Harry: "How is the Widow anyway? How she doing?"

Y/n: "Fine, I guess. I mean, nothing can really stop here. She's in Wakanda right now helping out with something."

Gwen: "Any idea what?"

Y/n: "Something about stolen vibranium, or somethin'."

Harry: "After what had happened with Ulysses Klau, I thought they'd get their security upgraded."

Y/n: "Well, Nat hasn't told me all the details, so I have no idea what really happened. Something serious, though."

Harry: "I bet. If Wakanda was stolen from, whoever it was knew what they were doing."

Y/n: "Yeah..."

Gwen: "Well, all I know is that the Avengers will solve it. Or just Natasha. She's badass."

You couldn't help but laugh at this and nod in agreement as Gwen sat back down in her seat.

Y/n: "Yeah. She is."

Timeskip...

The bus had soon arrived in front of Alchemax Tower and your class was loaded off. Your class stood in front of Alchemax Tower which was a giant compared to many buildings in the city.

Teacher: "Alright, Midtown Juniors. No wandering, no horsing around, and no funny business. I don't want to write any of you up."

A student threw a bean bag to another, but it was intercepted by the teacher. He told them to knock it off before continuing the rules.

Teacher: "Remember, it is a privilege to be here. We are guests of Alchemax, so behave accordingly. Let's not have a repeat of our trip to the planetarium. Now, let's go, people, and stick together.

The teacher began leading your class forward and into the titan of a tower. You were greeted by a scientist there, named Olivia Octavius, and she was going to be your class' guide. So she led you around the place, showing your class some of the most interesting places in the tower and talking about what Alchemax does. Basically, Alchemax provides chemical, plastic, and agricultural products and services to consumer markets that include food, transportation, health and medicine, personal care. It was a humanly gesture to the crapped-up world due to Thanos. They helped.

Your class was led into a new lab, a section of Alchemax Genetics. Inside was a huge electron microscope with scientists going around, researching and experimenting with spiders. You were in the back with Harry as Gwen was hanging with some other friends she's made in the month she's been at Midtown High. She was rather popular.

Dr. Octavius: "There are over thirty-two thousand known species of spiders in the world. They're in the order Arane, which is divided into three..."

You look around in awe, almost like a child. Sure, you usually put up this huge tough guy act and didn't put up with bullshit. But this was science. You loved science. You felt like a little kid in a candy store. Guess you can blame Peter and Tony for that.

Y/n: "Harry, look at that!" *points at electron microscope* "That's the most advanced electron microscope on the eastern seaboard. It's unreal..."

Harry: "Uh, cool."

You rolls your eyes at this. You knew Harry wasn't much of a "nerd" as you, but he was pretty smart. However, he preferred not to dive deep down into nerdness as you do. Then you look around again before spotting Nathaniel messing with Gwen. You were immediately filled with anger, but Harry kept you back as Gwen shoved Rodriguez away. You sigh as you follow Octavius.

Dr. Octavius: "Arachnids from all three groups have varying strengths which help them with their constant search for food."

She leads your class over to some glass casings full of spiders.

Dr. Octavius: "For example, the delana spider, family Spiracidae, has the ability to jump to catch its prey."

I take out my phone and look at Octavius.

Y/n: "Mind if I take some pictures? I love spiders."

Dr. Octavius: "Be my guest."

You smile gratefully at the scientist and open your camera. You aim my phone at the spider and try to take a picture, but Nathaniel "accidentally" bumps into you and makes you miss. You turn to glare at the athlete, but you get shoved forward as Octavius leads your group to another spider.

Harry: "They're all jerks. Ignore them."

Harry tells you as he pulls you back a bit. You nod, trying to calm down as you listen in.

Dr. Octavius: "Next we have the net web spider. Family Philistedadae, Genus Kukukenya. (I have no idea how to spell these) It spins an intricate, funnel-shaped web whose strands have a tensile strength proportionately equl to the type of high-tension wire used for bridge building."

You go to take a picture of this spider, but one of Nathaniel's friends, Roger Williams, shoves into you. You turn to him with a glare and he looks at you like he didn't do anything. You wanted to break his nose, but you didn't.

Harry: "Hey, leave him alone."

Roger: "Or what?"

Nathaniel: "Or he and Puny Parker here are gonna tell their parents." *fake gasp* "Oh, wait. You can't!"

Rodriguez and his friends all laugh and high-five each other. Now you just wanted to break their spins and leave them paralyzed for the rest of their lives. However, before you could grab one of them, Gwen walked by and grabbed Nathaniel by the scuff of his neck.

Gwen: "The hell you think you're doing, Rodriguez?"

Nathaniel: "O-oh. Hey, Gwen. What's up?"

Gwen: "What's up is gonna be your dinosaur underwear over your face if you don't leave my friends alone."

Nathaniel: "Alright, alright. We're going."

Nathaniel shrugs Gwen off and walks off with his goonies. Gwen laughs and turns to you.

Gwen: "You good, Y/n?"

Y/n: "Yeah. Yeah, I'm good."

Gwen: "Alright, then. Let's go."

You nod and follow Gwen as Octavius continues speaking.

Dr. Octavius: "This grass spider hunts using a set of reflexes with nerve conduction velocity so fast, that some researchers believe it almost borders on precognition and earsn awareness of danger. A... spider-sense."

You and Gwen walk up to some more glass cases of spiders where Harry was. He points at one that was concealing itself in its web. No, it was in front of its web. It looked like it was part of the branch that held up the web.

Harry: "Look at this guy. He looks like the stick the web's on."

Y/n: "Yeah. Some spiders can change colors to blend into their environment. They use it to hunt prey or hide from predators. A defense mechanism."

Harry: "... why would I want to know that?"

Y/n: "Who wouldn't?"

Gwen: "Well, I think it's cool, bug boy. Even if spiders are gross."

Y/n: "Can't argue with you on that one."

Gwen smiles and the three of you walk back over to the group. Olivia was talking about genetically modified spiders that Alchemax has been working on for the last few years. But you weren't exactly paying attention this time. You were busy looking at Gwen who had walked ahead of you and Harry.

Harry: "You're killing me, Parker."

You look at your besf friend.

Y/n: "What're you talking about?"

Harry: "Dude, I know you've been crushing on Gwen since she's got here. Why don't you talk to her?"

Y/n: "I don't follow. I talk to her everyday."

Harry: "You know what I mean."

You sigh and shake your head.

Y/n: "She's not gonna want someone like me, Harry. You know that."

Harry: "No, I don't. And neither do you. You should ask her out sometime."

You roll your eyes and walk past the orphaned Osborn. You only laughed a bit as the Alchemax scientist was talking about the fifteen genetically enhanced "super spiders" Alchemax has been working on.

Gwen: "There's only fourteen."

Dr. Octavius: "What?"

Gwen: "There's fourteen. One's missing."

Confused, Octavius walked up to the cases and saw that one was indeed missing. She brushed it off, however, saying that the researchers were probably working on that one right now. However, no one seemed to notice the spider crawling on its web in the corner.

Harry then nudged your shoulder as your class moves onto another section of the lab. You raise a brow at him and he motions to Gwen who was looking at the spiders still. He smiles at you and you only roll your eyes as he walks off. You then looked at Gwen before sighing and walking up to her.

Y/n: "Hey, Gwen."

Gwen: *turns to Y/n* "Hey, bug boy. What's up?"

Y/n: "Can I, uh..." *thinking* 'Say take you out sometime. Say take you out sometime.' *aloud* "Mind if I take some pictures of you and those spiders?"

Goddammit!

Gwen: "Really?"

Why'd she sound so disappointed?

Y/n: "Yeah. You're hair really brings out their eyes."

Gwen snorts and laughs at your joke, making you smile. She then agrees and you aim your phone camera at her and the spiders.

Gwen: "Just don't make me look bad, or I'll kill you."

Y/n: "I don't think it's possible for you to look bad."

Gwen smiles with a barely noticeable red hue on her face as she messes with her hair. You raise your phone up and snap a picture of Gwen posing next to the spiders.

Y/n: "Why do you think their modifying the spiders?"

Gwen: "I dunno. Maybe to make some sort of human-spider army for the government?"

You both laugh at this and you take another picture. You didn't, however, notice the spider tethering down towards you from above. But you did get the feeling something like this has happened before, but not to you. Like a weird sensation of deja vu.

You began to remember that Peter had told you he was bitten by a spider which gave him his powers. You had asked him if it could bite you as well and you could be his sidekick, Spiderling. He had told you the spider died, but laughed a bit since he recalled to you that his best friend Ned Leeds had asked him the same question.

Y/n: "Agh!"

You wince in pain and look down to see a spider bitting down on your hand. You smack it and it falls to the floor, dead with its legs curled up to its body. Gwen runs up to you in worry.

Gwen: "Hey, you okay?"

Y/n: "Yeah, I'm fine. Just some spider bite. Nothing too serious."

Gwen: "Let me look at it."

You didn't get the chance to respond as the blonde took your hand. She looks at the bite that was lightly bleeding, and you couldn't help but feel how soft her hands were. You blushed a bit as Gwen looked up at you.

Gwen: "Well, it doesn't seem to bad. Probably just a small spider."

Y/n: "Yeah... A small spider."

You were a bit breathless since Gwen hasn't been this close to you before. Both of your faces were mere inches away from each other, and Gwen had started staring at you. You stared back, looking into her bright blue eyes as she stared into your (E/C) orbs. It was an odd sensation this time, but the moment stopped when Harry cleared his throat.

Harry: "Am I interrupting something?"

Gwen: "Nope."

Y/n: "Nothing at all."

You and Gwen say as she drops your hand. You two look away from each other as you blush and hold your hand, rubbing the spot where the spider bit you.

Harry: "Come on, then. Let's go."

You nod and follow Gwen who walked after Harry. You didn't notice the holographic screen nearby showing human DNA mixing with spider DNA to make a whole new species.

Of course... it was supposedly only a theory.

Timeskip...

You enter into the quiet Compound and set your backpack to the side. You wiped away the sweat pouring down you face.

FRIDAY: "Good afternoon, Y/n. How was the field trip?"

Y/n: "It was fine... Hey, FRIDAY? Mind scanning me real quick? I don't feel so hot..."

FRIDAY: "Of course."

You walk past the kitchen and make your way to your room as the AI scans you. It was soon finished.

FRIDAY: "It seems you are coming down with a terrible fever. I believe you should lie down and rest."

Y/n: "Yeah... Sounds like a good idea..."

You say as you enter your room. You lazily take off your shoes and and begin pulling your shirt off.

FRIDAY: "Would you like me to call Natasha?"

Y/n: *takes off glasses* "Sure... Go ahead and do--"

You immediately fall to the floor and pass out, pulling a blanket off your bed and down with you. You roll across the floor in agony as your body ached, and you whimpered in your unconscious state as darkness consumes your mind.
