Introduction (Taking Up The Mantle)
2018...
It all happened so fast. You could barely understand it. Your mother, May Parker, had called to you for dinner, but when you entered the kitchen she wasn't there. Only a pile of dust was in the kitchen.
Y/n: "Mom? Mom, where are you?"
You had ran around the whole apartment to find your mother, but there was no sign of her. Sounds of confusion came from your neighbors outside, but you weren't allowed to go outside the apartment without permission, and without your mother or cousin, Peter Parker. So you stayed in your apartment and waited for someone to come and tell you what was going on. It wasn't long, however, until a friend of your mother entered your apartment and sat down with you. She told you that something terrible had happened and people were disappearing everywhere.
You couldn't believe what you were hearing, and never thought this could happen. You were terrified out of your mind. Where was Peter? Was he okay? Or Mr. Stark and Happy? Were they okay?
The woman watched over you for the next few weeks before someone you recognized walked through the door. It was Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow. She sat down with you and began to fully explain what had happened. The news had already covered it a small bit, talking about how an alien named Thanos wiped out half of all life. But Natasha cleared it up.
Thanos was an alien warlord who sought out these powerful gems called the Infinity Stones. With them all, he snapped his fingers and erased half of all life in the universe. The entire world was in shambles at the moment, but all you cared about at the moment was Peter. You asked her where she was, only for her to respond by telling you to come with her.
She drove you to the Avengers Compound in Upstate New York. There you met the remaining Avengers and reunited with a malnutritished Tony Stark who was sitting in a wheelchair and hooked up to an IV bag. When the genius saw you, he nearly broke down as you went up to him and hugged him.
Tony: "I'm so sorry, kid... I'm sorry... I wasn't able to save him..."
You immediately knew what Tony meant by this. Peter had went with him to fight Thanos and was snapped away, just like the rest of half the universe. You only hugged him a little tighter, and he appreciated it. He hugged back.
Later, you were sitting next to Tony in front of a table that was displaying holographic images of those who were snapped away.
Stephen Strange.
King T'Challa of Wakanda.
Sam Wilson.
Nick Fury.
Bucky Barnes.
Scott Lang.
Peter Parker...
Your heart broke at the word "MISSING" appearing under his face. Tony felt heartbroken as well. He was supposed to protect him and to make sure he grew up to be a great hero. And he had failed Peter, along with his cousin.
Rhodes: "It's been twenty-three days since Thanos came to Earth."
Natasha: "World governments are in pieces. The parts that are still working are trying to take a census and it looks like he did... He did exactly what he said he was going to do. Thanos wiped out... fifty percent of all living creatures."
You looked at Natasha, and you could see the feeling of sorrow held inside her eyes. She hid it well, but it's hard to hide things from a child.
You turned to look at Thor who was sitting in the corner of the room. His head was down as he scowled at nothing. He was angry.
Tony: "Where is he now?"
Steve: "We don't know. He just opened a portal and walked through."
Tony let out a breath as he wheeled himself forward a bit, but not too far away from you. He then looked at Thor.
"What's wrong with him?"
Rocket: "Ah, he's pissed. Thinks he failed. Which he of course did, but there's a lot of that going around, ain't there?"
Tony: "Honestly, until this very second, I thought you were a Build-a-Bear."
"Maybe I am..."
The raccoon shrugs as he says this and Steve speaks up.
Steve: "We've been hunting Thanos for three weeks now. Deep space scans and satellites, and we got nothing. Tony, you fought him."
Tony: "Who told you that?"
Everyone looked at Tony.
Tony: "I didn't fight him. No, he wiped my face with a planet while the Bleeker Street Magician gave away the store. That's what happened. It wasn't a fight."
Steve: "Did he give you any clues? Any coordinates, anything?"
Tony: "Uh... pfft!"
You see everyone look down at this, and you felt down as well. If the Avengers couldn't find Thanos, you wouldn't be able to get your family back. They won't even get avenged.
Tony: "Y'know, I had a vision about this a few years back. I didn't want to believe it. Thought I was dreaming."
Steve: "Tony, I'm gonna need you to focus."
Tony: "And I needed you. As in past tense. That trumps what you need. It's too late, buddy. Sorry. You know what I need? I need to shave."
Tony stands up from his wheelchair, putting his hand on the table which knocks some soup to the ground. You get up from your chair and hold Tony's arm in case he fell, which he looked down at you with a nod. He then turned back to Captain America.
Tony: "And I believe I remember telling us that, alive or otherwise, what we needed a suit of armor around the world! Remember that? Whether it impacted our precious freedoms or not. That's what we needed."
Steve: "Well that didn't work out, did it?"
Tony: "I said we'd lose, and you said we'd do that together, too. And guess what, Cap? We lost, and you weren't there. And now Y/n here is without his family. That's on you."
Y/n: "Mr. Stark, please don't--"
Tony: "Not now, kid." *to Steve* "But that's what we do, right? Our best work after the fight? We're the Avengers. The Avengers. Not the Prevengers."
Rhodes: "Okay."
Tony: "Right?"
Rhodes: "You made your point."
Y/n: "Mr. Stark, please sit down."
He ignores you as he slips from your hold and walks towards the former Avenger. However, Rhodes grabs him.
Tony: "Nah, nah. Here's my point. You know what?"
Rhodes: "Tony, you're sick."
Tony: *points at Carol* "You're great, by the way. She's great."
Rhodes: "Sit down."
Tony: "We need you. You're new blood. Bunch of tired old mules!" *walks up to Steve* "I got nothing for you, Cap! I got no coordinates, no clues, no strategies, no options. Zero. Zip. Nada. No trust. Liar."
Steve looked at Tony, affected by his words. Then Iron Man tore the nanotech Arc Reactor off his chest and turned to you. He shoved it towards you and you took it.
Tony: "You put that on whenever you're in danger and defend yourself, because no one else is gonna come help. Not some stranger, no good Samaritan, and definitely not them."
He was referring to the Avengers, mostly Steve, when he said this. You had no idea what to say in response, so you just nod. Tony looked satisfied with this before he falls to his knees. You drop the Arc Reactor and grab him to keep him from collapsing from the ground.
Steve: "Tony!"
Y/n: "I got your Mr. Stark. I got you."
Tony: "I'm fine. I..."
He immediately falls unconscious in your arms. He was then brought to another room where Bruce Banner gave Tony a sedative and left him to sleep on a bed. You stayed with him, not wanting to get in the way of the Avengers and their work.
You do listen in a bit, however, and hear that Thanos was on some planet where he had planed to "retire to". The Avengers and Captain Marvel made a plan to head to space and the Mad Titan. They were going to kill Thanos and steal the Infinity Stones to bring everyone snapped away back.
They had left with Rbodes checking up on you one last time. And then they were gone.
You stayed by Tony's side for the next few hours. You had even fallen asleep in the chair next to his bed where you stayed until you were woken back up by Natasha.
Natasha: "Hey, kid. I... I have something to tell you."
Y/n: "Wha...? What is it?"
Natasha went to answer, but closed her mouth instead. You were confused by this before you saw a tear go down the Russian's cheek. Your eyes immediately went wide at this and you sit up.
Y/n: "No... You're lying..."
Natasha: "I'm sorry, Y/n. The Stones are gone. They aren't coming back..."
You immediately broke down then and there in that chair in front of Black Widow. You nearly fell forward, but the spy had caught you in her arms and held you there. You cried into her shoulder as she tried to keep her composure. But she couldn't keep one tear from escaping her eye.
So as you sat there in Natasha's arms, you sobbed. You realized that May and Peter weren't coming back, and it broke your heart. You would never taste your mother's cooking again. You'd never get to hang out with your cousin again and listen to his stupid corny jokes. Family night would cease to exist. All of it was gone because of him.
Because of Thanos.
Your sadness soon grew into anger, and then into pure unbridled rage. He took everything from you. You wanted to hurt him. Kill him. Make him suffer for what he did to you and people all across the world... across the universe, even. But you couldn't. He was on another planet you'll never get to see and most likely already dead, killed by either Captain Marvel or Thor.
You would never get that satisfaction. And it filled you with burning fury and hatred.
