Chapter 53
The sun cast a warm glow over the academy's central courtyard, where students lounged on stone benches and grassy knolls. The air buzzed with excitement as friends reunited and shared tales of their personal expeditions. Amidst the lively crowd, Mira leaned forward on a bench, her amber eyes gleaming with enthusiasm.
"I'm telling you, navigating that volcanic cavern was no joke," Mira said, her brown hair falling over her shoulder in loose waves. "The heat was so intense I thought my armor would melt right off. And don't get me started on the magma golems guarding the fire gem."
Lily sat beside her, fingers absentmindedly twirling a strand of her long, blue hair. Her pale silver eyes widened as she listened. "That sounds terrifying, Mira. I don't think I could handle that kind of heat. The ice plateau I ventured to was the complete opposite—freezing winds and hidden crevasses everywhere. But I managed to find this." She opened her palm to reveal a small crystal that shimmered with frost energy.
Kael lounged on the grass at their feet, his feline ears twitching with amusement. His tousled silver hair caught the light as he grinned. "You both had it easy," he teased. "Try scaling a high-altitude cliff while dodging territorial wind raptors. Nearly got my tail fur plucked." He held up a magnificent feather that glowed softly with mana. "But it was worth it for this beauty."
Mira rolled her eyes playfully. "Always the show-off, aren't you, Kael?"
He winked. "Only when I've got something worth showing off."
Nearby, clusters of students engaged in animated discussions, their voices blending into a tapestry of stories.
"I heard Crown Prince Lucian braved the storm caverns," a girl with short auburn hair whispered to her companion. "They say he retrieved a storm crystal that crackles with lightning."
Her friend nodded eagerly. "Not surprising. He's always been exceptional. Did you hear about Aria Nightshade? She returned from an ancient crypt with a shadow-infused relic. No one knows how she did it."
A tall boy with glasses adjusted his satchel. "The nobles always bring back the most impressive treasures. Makes you wonder how the rest of us are supposed to compete."
"Well, not everyone can be born into prestige," another student replied with a sigh.
Back on the bench, Mira stretched her arms overhead. "Speaking of missing persons, has anyone seen Noah lately? He should've been back by now."
Lily's expression grew concerned. "I hope he's okay. The Serpentine Caverns are notoriously dangerous."
Kael flicked his tail thoughtfully. "Knowing Noah, he's probably fine. Maybe he got sidetracked wrestling a dragon or something."
Mira chuckled. "Wouldn't put it past him."
Just then, a ripple of murmurs spread through the courtyard. Heads turned toward the main gate as two figures emerged. Noah walked with steady strides, his dark brown hair tousled and his eyes reflecting a quiet resolve. Beside him was Seraphine Lumina, her platinum hair cascading over her shoulders, partially concealed by her ornate mask adorned with delicate engravings. The elegant mask left only her striking emerald eyes visible.
"Look who's decided to grace us with their presence," Kael remarked, his ears perking up.
Lily let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. "Thank goodness."
As Noah and Seraphine made their way across the courtyard, conversations hushed. The crowd parted instinctively, students stepping aside with curious and awestruck expressions.
"Is that Seraphine Lumina with Noah?" a girl whispered.
"They were assigned together for the expedition?" another replied, eyebrows raised.
From her satchel, Seraphine carefully withdrew an object wrapped in cloth. Unveiling it, she revealed an ancient mana core that glowed with a mesmerizing light. The core pulsed gently, emitting waves of energy that everyone could feel even from a distance.
Gasps echoed through the courtyard.
"An ancient mana core!"
"I can't believe they retrieved something so rare."
"I thought no one ever returned from the Serpentine Caverns."
Professor Elowen Faelith approached gracefully, her auburn hair cascading over her shoulders. Dressed in elegant robes that denoted her status as the head of S-Class, her piercing green eyes assessed the mana core before settling on Noah and Seraphine.
"An impressive artifact," she remarked, her voice carrying the authority of her position. "Tell me, how did you come to possess it?"
Noah met her gaze respectfully. "We ventured deep into the Serpentine Caverns, Professor. The journey was treacherous. Without Seraphine's mastery of Earth Magic, we wouldn't have navigated the shifting tunnels or withstood the guardian's attacks."
Seraphine glanced at him subtly, a flicker of surprise in her eyes at the commendation.
Professor Faelith nodded thoughtfully. "The Serpentine Caverns are not for the faint of heart. Your ability to adapt and collaborate under such pressure is commendable." She turned her attention to Seraphine. "Your strategic use of Earth Magic was instrumental, I presume?"
Seraphine inclined her head. "It was essential for our survival and the retrieval of the core."
The professor's lips curved into a faint smile. "Well done, both of you. The academy will greatly benefit from this addition to our repository. Your efforts will be formally recognized at the upcoming assembly."
Whispers spread rapidly among the onlookers.
"They're going to be recognized at the assembly!"
"Who would've thought Noah and Seraphine would team up like this?"
As Professor Faelith departed, a swarm of students closed in, eager to hear more.
"What was it like inside the caverns?"
"Did you really fight a guardian?"
"How did you two end up working together?"
Noah answered their questions with measured patience, always redirecting praise toward Seraphine. "We faced many challenges, but Seraphine's expertise made all the difference."
Seraphine, unaccustomed to such attention, responded politely but kept her answers brief. Her usual reserved demeanor seemed to hold the crowd at a respectful distance.
Amidst the flurry of inquiries, she leaned slightly toward Noah. "Thank you," she murmured.
He glanced at her, a hint of amusement in his eyes. "For what?"
"For acknowledging my contributions," she replied softly.
He offered a slight shrug. "Just stating the truth."
As the crowd began to disperse, drawn away by other curiosities, Seraphine hesitated before speaking again. "Noah."
He turned to face her fully. "Yes?"
She met his gaze directly, her emerald eyes reflecting a depth of sincerity. "You can call me Sera."
He blinked, surprised by the gesture. A warm smile spread across his face. "Alright, Sera."
A subtle nod was her only response before she gracefully moved away, leaving Noah to watch her departure with a thoughtful expression.
"Well, look who decided to join the living," Mira called out teasingly as she approached with Kael and Lily in tow.
Noah chuckled, turning to face his friends. "Missed me that much, did you?"
Kael clapped him on the back. "Don't flatter yourself too much. We just wanted to hear how you managed to survive the infamous Serpentine Caverns."
Lily's smile was gentle. "We're glad you're back safely."
They settled onto a nearby bench, the late afternoon sun casting a golden hue over the courtyard.
"So," Mira began, leaning forward with anticipation, "tell us everything."
Noah recounted their journey, carefully omitting the more perilous details but conveying the essence of their challenges. He described the labyrinthine tunnels, the ancient mechanisms they encountered, and the final chamber where they found the mana core.
"Sounds like quite the adventure," Kael remarked, his feline tail swishing lazily. "Almost makes my wind raptor escapade seem tame."
Mira raised an eyebrow. "Only you would consider being attacked by giant birds 'tame.'"
Lily's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "What was it like working with Seraphine? She's always been so... distant."
Noah considered his response. "She's incredibly skilled and focused. We wouldn't have succeeded without her."
Mira smirked. "Sounds like someone made a new friend."
He shrugged nonchalantly. "We make a good team."
As the conversation shifted to other topics, Noah felt a sense of normalcy returning. The camaraderie with his friends was a welcome respite from the intensity of the expedition.
Eventually, the group began to disperse. Kael stretched lazily. "I've got to report to Professor Alden about my treasure. Catch you all later."
Mira waved him off. "Don't get into too much trouble."
As she and Kael departed, Lily lingered beside Noah. A comfortable silence settled between them before she spoke.
"You really worried me," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
He turned to her, noticing the concern etched on her delicate features. "I'm sorry, Lily. I didn't mean to make you worry."
She fiddled with a silver bracelet on her wrist. "I know you can handle yourself, but the Serpentine Caverns are dangerous. I was afraid something might have happened."
He offered a reassuring smile. "I appreciate your concern. But I'm alright."
She met his gaze, a soft blush coloring her cheeks. "Just... be careful, okay?"
"Always," he promised.
With a shy smile, she nodded and excused herself, leaving Noah alone in the fading light.
As evening approached, the academy grounds buzzed with renewed energy. Word of the upcoming assembly spread quickly, igniting discussions about rankings, recognitions, and the treasures retrieved by various students.
"Did you hear? The assembly will feature the top expeditions."
"I bet Lucian will take the spotlight again."
"Don't forget about Aria. Her shadow relic is supposed to be incredible."
Noah walked slowly toward his dormitory, the weight of the day settling in. The prospect of public recognition was both unfamiliar and somewhat unsettling. He preferred to keep a low profile, but circumstances seemed determined to thrust him into the limelight.
He glanced down at Nocturne, the dark blade sheathed at his side. The memory of the mark he'd seen in the treasure chamber surfaced again—the same mark that appeared when he used Nocturne's teleportation ability. It couldn't be a coincidence.
"What are you hiding?" he mused quietly, his fingers brushing the hilt of the sword.
Determination welled within him. There were secrets yet to uncover, mysteries that tied him to places and events he didn't fully understand. The connection between Nocturne and the ancient caverns was a thread he intended to follow.
As he reached the entrance to his dorm, the sky above painted with hues of twilight, Noah resolved to delve deeper into the enigma surrounding his sword. Whatever challenges lay ahead, he was ready to face them.
