Chapter 40
The training field buzzed with energy as students from Classes S, A, B, and C gathered under the late morning sun. The vast expanse was lined with sparring rings, each surrounded by eager spectators. Professor Alden Marek stood alongside Professor Elowen Faelith at the center, their gazes sweeping over the assembled students.
"Today marks the beginning of our joint sparring sessions," Professor Marek announced, his kind hazel eyes conveying both warmth and authority. "This is an opportunity for you to test your skills against a variety of opponents and learn from one another."
Professor Elowen's piercing green eyes met those of the students. "You will be paired randomly across classes," she said, her tone firm. "Use this chance to demonstrate your abilities and to observe the diverse techniques of your peers."
Noah stood among his classmates from Class B, feeling the undercurrent of nervousness that rippled through them. Lily Veylan fidgeted beside him, her pale silver eyes reflecting a mix of anxiety and determination. Theo Lincrest bounced on the balls of his feet, his restless energy palpable.
"Looks like we're in for it," Theo whispered, flashing a quick grin.
"We'll be fine," Noah replied, offering a reassuring nod.
Across the field, Class S students exuded confidence. Mira Lannett adjusted the daggers at her waist, her warm amber eyes scanning the crowd. Kael Faerlan's golden feline eyes gleamed with excitement, a mischievous smile playing on his lips. The noble group stood poised, their distinctive appearances marking them as elites.
"Remember," Professor Marek continued, "this is a learning experience. Respect your opponents and give it your all."
The first match featured a student from Class A wielding a fiery spear against a Class C student specializing in Earth Magic. The Class A student moved with precision, flames dancing along the spear's edge as he pressed the attack. The Class C student struggled to keep up, erecting earthen barriers that crumbled under the relentless assault.
"He's not giving her a chance to recover," Mira observed from the sidelines.
Kael tilted his head thoughtfully. "She's too reactive. Needs to anticipate rather than just defend."
The match concluded swiftly with the Class A student emerging victorious. Applause rippled through the spectators, though there was a somber note among the Class C students.
"That was intense," Lily murmured.
"Yeah," Noah agreed. "But we can learn from watching."
Noah's name was called for the next match. He stepped into the sparring ring, gripping Nocturne's hilt with a steady hand. His opponent, a Class A student named Marcus, approached confidently. Marcus wielded a slender blade, water swirling around it in fluid motions.
"Ready?" Marcus asked, a hint of challenge in his eyes.
Noah nodded. "Ready."
The duel began with Marcus launching forward, his blade extending as water magic elongated its reach. Noah sidestepped, using Repulse to create a buffer of space. He noted the graceful arcs of Marcus's attacks, the water adding an unpredictable element.
"He's using the water to extend his range and flexibility," Noah thought. "I need to find an opening."
Marcus pressed on, each strike flowing seamlessly into the next. Noah parried, the sound of clashing blades echoing around them. He felt the subtle hum of Nocturne in his hand, the blade responding to his movements.
Focusing his right eye, Noah analyzed the mana patterns in Marcus's attacks. He noticed a slight delay when Marcus shifted between offensive and defensive stances.
"Now," Noah decided.
He feigned a retreat, then suddenly surged forward with a mana-enhanced strike. Nocturne met Marcus's blade, and for a moment, they were locked. With a swift motion, Noah twisted, disrupting Marcus's balance.
Seizing the opportunity, Noah delivered a decisive blow that disarmed his opponent. Marcus's blade clattered to the ground, water dissipating into mist.
Marcus blinked in surprise before offering a respectful nod. "Well fought."
"Same to you," Noah replied, extending a hand. They shook, and the crowd murmured appreciatively.
"Not bad for a Class B student," someone commented.
Mira watched with a proud smile, while Kael gave an approving nod.
As the matches continued, Class S students took the spotlight. Mira faced off against a Class A opponent, her movements sharp and controlled. Flames danced along her daggers as she weaved through attacks, her messy brown hair whipping around her determined face.
"She's in her element," Noah thought, watching as Mira dispatched her opponent with a fiery flourish.
Kael's turn came, and he didn't disappoint. His wind-enhanced speed left his adversary bewildered, golden eyes flashing with excitement. He moved like a blur, light gray hair flowing behind him.
"Catch me if you can!" Kael teased, dodging spells effortlessly before ending the match with a swift strike.
Lucian Valerius and Seraphine Lumina participated as well, their victories almost effortless. Lucian's silver hair glinted as he wielded his hero's blade with practiced ease, light magic illuminating his path. Seraphine's earth magic reshaped the terrain, her emerald eyes focused beneath her ornate mask.
"The gap between classes is clear," Noah mused. "But that doesn't mean we can't bridge it."
Noah was called again, this time facing a Class S student named Elias, known for his prowess with lightning magic. Elias smirked as he approached, sparks crackling around his fingertips.
"Didn't expect to face someone from Class B," Elias remarked. "This should be quick."
"We'll see," Noah replied calmly.
The duel commenced with Elias unleashing a bolt of lightning. Noah reacted instantly, using Repulse to deflect the attack. The air sizzled around them as Elias continued his assault, each strike faster than the last.
"He's relentless," Noah thought, dodging narrowly. The lightning's heat brushed against his skin, and he knew he couldn't stay on the defensive.
Drawing upon his mana reserves, Noah closed the distance. He swung Nocturne, aiming for a direct hit. Elias parried, but as their blades connected, a strange sensation coursed through Nocturne.
A glowing white symbol appeared on Elias's shoulder—a circle with two points extending left and right and a center dot. Elias glanced at it dismissively.
"Trying to mark me? Cute trick," he scoffed.
Noah felt an intuitive pull. Infusing mana into Nocturne, he focused on the symbol. In an instant, his surroundings blurred, and he found himself behind Elias.
"What—?" Elias began, but Noah was already striking. The blow shattered Elias's mana shield, sending him stumbling forward.
Gasps erupted from the crowd. Professors Marek and Elowen exchanged intrigued glances.
Elias turned, shock evident in his eyes. "How did you—?"
Noah held Nocturne at the ready but didn't press the advantage. "I think that's the match."
Elias clenched his jaw before nodding curtly. "Well played."
Applause followed, though it was tinged with murmurs of disbelief and curiosity.
"Did he just teleport?" Theo exclaimed from the sidelines.
Lily's eyes widened. "Incredible..."
Mira and Kael stood together, both looking impressed.
"That's new," Mira commented.
Kael grinned. "Our Noah's full of surprises."
The next match saw Noah facing a Class A student named Lila, a proficient wind mage. Determined to understand Nocturne's ability further, Noah engaged with purpose.
Lila started aggressively, gusts of wind propelling her movements and sending slicing currents toward Noah. He navigated the onslaught, his focus sharp.
"Let's test this," he thought.
He managed to land a glancing blow on Lila's arm, the white symbol appearing once more. This time, Noah infused mana into Nocturne with greater intent. He visualized teleporting not directly to the symbol but behind her.
The sensation was disorienting but effective. In a blink, he reappeared at her back. Before Lila could react, he tapped her shoulder with the flat of his blade.
She spun around, eyes wide. "How are you doing that?"
"A new ability, it seems," he replied.
The match concluded with Noah's victory. The crowd's reaction was a mix of awe and excitement.
"That's quite the skill," Professor Marek remarked to Professor Elowen.
She nodded thoughtfully. "Indeed. That blade is more than it appears."
As the sparring sessions wrapped up, students gathered in clusters, animatedly discussing the day's events. The atmosphere was electric.
Mira approached Noah, a teasing glint in her amber eyes. "Stealing the spotlight, are we?"
He chuckled. "Wasn't intentional."
Kael joined them, his feline ears twitching with amusement. "At this rate, you might give us Class S folks a run for our money."
"Maybe one day," Noah replied modestly.
Lily stepped forward, her cheeks slightly flushed. "You were amazing out there."
"Thanks, Lily," he said warmly. "You did well too."
She smiled shyly. "I still have a lot to learn."
"We all do," Noah assured her.
As the sun began to set, painting the sky with hues of orange and purple, Noah found a quiet spot on the grassy hillside overlooking the academy grounds. Exhaustion tugged at his limbs, but his mind buzzed with thoughts of Nocturne's newfound ability.
"Teleportation," he mused aloud. "But only to marked targets. I need to understand it better."
Footsteps approached softly. Turning, he saw Lily standing hesitantly a few feet away.
"Mind if I join you?" she asked.
"Not at all."
She sat down gracefully, smoothing her simple attire. For a moment, they sat in comfortable silence, watching the sky's colors deepen.
"You were really impressive today," Lily said softly.
"Thank you," Noah replied. "I'm still getting used to Nocturne."
"It's a remarkable blade," she remarked. "But it's also you. Your skills are growing."
He glanced at her, noting the sincerity in her pale silver eyes. "I suppose. There's always room to improve."
Lily fiddled with a strand of her soft blue hair. "I envy your determination. Sometimes I feel... out of place here."
"Why would you say that?"
She sighed gently. "Coming from a merchant family, I don't have the noble background or the innate talent some others do. I struggle with my ice magic more often than not."
Noah shook his head. "Your background doesn't define your potential. You've made progress. Remember when you created that ice barrier during training? It was solid work."
She smiled faintly. "I guess so."
They continued talking, sharing stories of their families and aspirations. Lily spoke of her parents' shop filled with rare artifacts, the way her mother meticulously cataloged each item.
"It was always fascinating," she said. "But I wanted to do more than just sell other people's discoveries."
"I understand that," Noah said. "I spent years training, trying to step out of my sister's shadow."
"Elara, right? The 'Angelic Warrior'?"
He nodded. "She's incredible. I've always admired her, but it can be... challenging."
Lily looked at him thoughtfully. "I think you're carving your own path."
"Maybe," he replied, his gaze drifting back to the horizon.
A comfortable silence settled between them. The day's exertions caught up with Noah, and his eyelids grew heavy.
Lily noticed his head dipping. "Tired?"
"A bit," he admitted, stifling a yawn.
"Maybe you should rest."
He nodded but didn't move. Moments later, his breathing deepened as he drifted into sleep.
Lily's heart skipped as she realized he'd fallen asleep sitting up. Gently, she shifted so that his head could rest on her lap. Her cheeks flushed, but she remained still, not wanting to wake him.
She gazed down at his peaceful expression, a soft smile touching her lips. "You work so hard," she whispered.
From a distance, Mira wandered aimlessly, her thoughts swirling. The day's events left her both proud and contemplative.
"He's growing so quickly," she thought. "Pushing himself beyond limits."
She spotted movement on the hillside and paused. Squinting, she recognized Noah and Lily. As she drew closer, the scene became clear—Noah asleep with his head on Lily's lap, and Lily sitting quietly, a gentle expression on her face.
A pang of emotion struck Mira, a mix of surprise and something deeper. Her chest tightened, and she clenched her fists reflexively.
"So that's how it is," she murmured to herself.
She considered approaching but hesitated. Instead, she turned away, her mind a flurry of conflicting feelings.
The evening air grew cooler, stars beginning to peek through the fading daylight. Lily remained still, lost in her own thoughts as she watched over Noah.
"Maybe we're all finding our place," she mused silently.
