Chapter 34

The morning sun filtered through the thin curtains of Noah's dormitory room, casting a warm, golden hue across the simple furnishings. He sat on the edge of his bed, absently adjusting the bandage over his right eye. The familiar fabric felt both comforting and constraining—a reminder of secrets kept and truths unspoken.

Noah stood and stretched, his muscles still slightly sore from the previous day's training. He walked over to the small desk cluttered with textbooks and notes, picking up a worn photograph tucked under a stack of papers. It was of him, Mira, and Kael from their early days before the academy—three friends with big dreams and uncertain futures.

A soft knock at the window drew his attention. A sparrow had landed on the sill, pecking lightly at the glass before fluttering away. Noah smiled faintly. The rain from the night before had washed the campus clean, leaving everything smelling fresh and new. It seemed like a good day to reconnect.

He wondered how Mira and Kael were adjusting to Class S. The prestigious placement came with high expectations and pressures he couldn't fully grasp from his position in Class B. They hadn't had much time to catch up since the term began, each consumed by their own schedules and challenges.

Noah gathered his belongings and headed out, determined to find his friends between classes. As he stepped into the hallway, the buzz of morning activity surrounded him—students exchanging greetings, the scuffle of shoes on polished floors, the distant hum of magical equipment being prepared for the day's lessons.

Outside, the academy grounds were vibrant. Sunlight danced off the dewdrops clinging to the grass, and the air was filled with the soft rustling of leaves and the murmur of conversation. Noah took a deep breath, savoring the moment before making his way toward the central courtyard.

The courtyard bustled with energy, students milling about as they moved between the towering buildings that housed lecture halls and practice rooms. Underneath a sprawling oak tree, he spotted Mira and Kael. Mira's fiery red hair was impossible to miss, cascading over her shoulders as she gestured animatedly. Kael lounged beside her, his golden eyes half-closed in his usual relaxed demeanor, tawny ears peeking through his tousled hair.

Noah felt a surge of warmth at the sight of them. Despite the changes and the distance that had grown between their daily lives, some things remained reassuringly constant.

"Look who finally decided to grace us with his presence," Mira called out as he approached, a teasing smile playing on her lips.

Kael opened one eye fully, a sly grin spreading across his face. "Well, if it isn't Noah. Thought you'd forgotten all about us down there in Class B."

Noah chuckled, settling down on the grass beside them. "Hardly. Just been... busy."

"Busy avoiding us, more like," Mira retorted, but her tone was light.

"How have you two been?" Noah asked, genuinely curious.

Mira sighed dramatically. "Oh, you know, surrounded by prodigies and nobles who think they own the place. It's been a delight."

Kael stretched lazily. "It's not all bad. Some of them are actually quite talented—when they're not busy admiring themselves in the mirror."

Noah smiled. "Tell me more. What's Class S like?"

Mira rolled her eyes. "Intense. Professors expect perfection, and the competition is fierce. Everyone's trying to outdo each other."

"Sounds exhausting," Noah commented.

"It can be," Kael agreed. "But it's also pushing us to improve. I suppose that's the point."

Mira leaned forward. "What about you? How's Class B treating you?"

"It's been interesting," Noah replied thoughtfully. "We've had some challenging exercises. Just the other day, we had to navigate an enchanted forest simulation."

"Really?" Kael's ears perked up. "How did that go?"

Noah hesitated briefly. "It was tough. We faced a mana beast that nearly got the better of us."

Mira raised an eyebrow. "But you handled it?"

"With teamwork," he said. "Everyone played a part."

She smirked. "Always so modest."

Before he could respond, Noah noticed Lily walking across the courtyard. She moved quietly, her soft blue hair catching the light as she kept her gaze low, avoiding the clusters of students around her. She seemed to be searching for a place to sit, her posture tense.

"Lily!" Noah called out, waving her over.

She stopped abruptly, her pale silver eyes widening in surprise. For a moment, she looked as though she might turn and walk away, but then she squared her shoulders slightly and approached hesitantly.

"Hi, Noah," she said softly, glancing nervously at Mira and Kael.

"Lily, these are my friends Mira and Kael," Noah introduced. "We grew up together."

Mira offered a polite smile, though Noah noticed a slight tightening around her eyes. "Nice to meet you, Lily."

Kael gave a friendly nod. "Any friend of Noah's is a friend of ours."

Lily shifted her weight, her fingers fiddling with the hem of her sleeve. "It's nice to meet you both."

Noah gestured for her to sit with them. "We were just catching up. I was telling them about the enchanted forest challenge."

"Ah, yes," Kael said, his golden eyes gleaming with interest. "Noah mentioned you all faced a mana beast?"

Lily nodded, her gaze flickering to Noah before settling back on Kael. "It was... intense."

"Noah says you were a big help," Mira commented, her tone light but with an undercurrent Noah couldn't quite place.

"I just did what I could," Lily replied modestly.

"Don't sell yourself short," Noah interjected. "Your ice magic was crucial."

She offered a small smile. "Thank you."

Kael leaned back on his hands. "Ice magic, huh? That's impressive. Not many can wield it effectively."

Lily's cheeks flushed slightly. "I'm still learning."

"Aren't we all?" Kael said with a chuckle.

Mira glanced between them, her amber eyes studying Lily thoughtfully. "So, Lily, what brought you to the academy?"

Lily hesitated. "I wanted to improve my magic. To... find a place where I belong."

Mira nodded slowly. "I can understand that."

An awkward silence settled over the group. Noah sensed the unease and searched for a way to ease the tension.

"So, how are things in Class S?" he asked, directing the question to both Mira and Kael.

Kael shrugged. "As we were saying, it's a mix. The professors are demanding, and the students are... well, interesting."

"Interesting is one way to put it," Mira added wryly. "You've got the nobles who think they're above everyone else, and then there's Crown Prince Lucian Valerius."

Lily's eyes widened slightly at the mention of the prince. "The Crown Prince attends classes with you?"

"Indeed," Kael confirmed. "He's hard to miss."

"What's he like?" Noah inquired.

Mira considered. "Composed. Skilled. He doesn't flaunt his status, but everyone knows who he is. Commands attention without trying."

"Sounds like quite the presence," Noah remarked.

"He is," Kael agreed. "But honestly, I'm more interested in focusing on my own progress than worrying about him."

Mira shot him a sidelong glance. "You say that, but you were pretty impressed when he demonstrated that dual-element spell in class."

Kael grinned. "Hey, credit where it's due. That was impressive."

Noah smiled, glad to see some of the tension dissipating. "Well, it seems like Class S is keeping you both on your toes."

"Absolutely," Mira said. "But enough about us. Tell me more about your class. Any other interesting classmates?"

He thought for a moment. "There's Theo—always energetic and optimistic. Sienna, who's incredibly skilled with earth magic. And then there's Edric..."

At the mention of Edric, Lily's expression became more guarded.

"Edric?" Kael prompted.

"He's... complicated," Noah admitted. "We've had some disagreements."

Mira's eyes narrowed slightly. "Is he giving you trouble?"

"Nothing I can't handle," Noah assured her.

"Well, if he steps out of line, let us know," Kael said lightly, though there was a hint of seriousness beneath his tone.

"I appreciate it," Noah replied.

Lily glanced at Noah. "Maybe we should get to class soon."

He checked the time. "You're right. I didn't realize it was getting late."

"Time flies when you're catching up," Kael said with a wink.

They stood, gathering their belongings. As they prepared to part ways, a noticeable hush fell over the courtyard. Students began to step aside, creating a pathway from one of the nearby lecture halls.

Emerging from the building was a group of Class S students, their uniforms pristine and bearing subtle embellishments denoting their elite status. At the center walked Crown Prince Lucian Valerius. His silver hair caught the sunlight, and his piercing blue eyes held a calm, measured gaze. He moved with an effortless grace, exuding an air of quiet authority.

Mira and Kael exchanged glances. "Speak of the devil," Kael murmured.

Lily stood a little closer to Noah, her posture reflecting a mix of curiosity and apprehension.

As Lucian surveyed the courtyard, his eyes fell upon Noah. For a moment, their gazes met, and then, to the surprise of those around them, the prince altered his course and began walking directly toward their group.

Whispers spread among the students, a ripple of speculation and intrigue. Noah felt a knot form in his stomach but maintained a composed exterior.

"Why is he coming over here?" Mira whispered.

Kael's feline eyes sparkled with amusement. "Looks like you're popular today, Noah."

Lucian approached, his expression neutral yet attentive. "Noah, isn't it?" he said, his voice smooth and clear.

"Yes, Your Highness," Noah replied respectfully.

"No need for formalities," Lucian said with a slight smile. "I prefer to be addressed simply by name while at the academy."

"Of course," Noah agreed.

Lucian glanced briefly at the others, offering a polite nod. "I've heard about your performance during the enchanted forest challenge."

Noah was mildly surprised. "News travels fast."

"It does," Lucian acknowledged. "Your strategic approach and ability to adapt caught my attention."

"Thank you," Noah said, choosing his words carefully. "I was just doing my part."

Lucian studied him for a moment. "Placement in classes can be somewhat... arbitrary. It's clear you have considerable skill."

Noah felt a mix of pride and discomfort. "I still have much to learn."

"Don't we all," Lucian replied. "Perhaps we'll have the opportunity to spar sometime."

Mira's eyes widened slightly, and Kael raised an eyebrow.

"I'd be honored," Noah said, maintaining eye contact.

Lucian's gaze shifted to Lily. "And you must be Lily. Your ice magic is quite rare and valuable."

She blinked in surprise. "Oh, um... thank you."

He inclined his head. "I look forward to seeing how both of you progress." With that, he gave a courteous nod and continued on his way, his entourage following closely.

As soon as he was out of earshot, Mira turned to Noah, her expression a mixture of astonishment and something else he couldn't quite place. "What was that about?"

Noah shrugged lightly. "I'm not entirely sure."

Kael chuckled. "Seems the Crown Prince has taken an interest in you."

"Great," Noah said wryly. "Just what I needed."

Lily looked thoughtful. "He seems... different from what I expected."

"How so?" Mira asked, her tone neutral.

Lily hesitated. "I suppose I thought he'd be more... aloof. But he was approachable."

"He's definitely not like some of the other nobles," Kael agreed.

Mira crossed her arms. "Still, it's unusual for him to seek out someone from another class."

Noah sensed the underlying tension and tried to diffuse it. "It was probably just a passing comment. Nothing to read into."

"Maybe," Mira conceded, though her expression remained skeptical.

Kael gave Noah a playful nudge. "Well, if you start rubbing elbows with royalty, don't forget us little people."

Noah laughed softly. "I think you're safe."

They began walking toward their respective classes. As they reached a fork in the path, Mira paused. "We'll catch up again soon?"

"Definitely," Noah assured her.

Kael waved lazily. "Take care, both of you."

As Noah and Lily continued toward their building, she glanced up at him. "Are you okay?"

He met her gaze. "Why do you ask?"

"You seemed... uneasy when the prince spoke to you."

He considered her observation. "I suppose I was caught off guard. I'm not used to that kind of attention."

She nodded. "It can be overwhelming."

"How about you? You handled it well."

She smiled faintly. "I was nervous, but he was polite."

They walked in companionable silence for a moment.

"Thank you for introducing me to your friends," Lily said softly.

"Of course," Noah replied. "I thought it might be nice to expand our circle."

"They seem close to you."

He nodded. "We've known each other a long time."

She hesitated before speaking again. "I hope I didn't intrude."

"Not at all," he assured her. "I'm glad you joined us."

She seemed relieved. "Me too."

That evening, Noah returned to his dormitory, the day's events playing over in his mind. The interaction with Lucian was unexpected, and he couldn't shake a lingering curiosity about the prince's intentions.

As he entered his room, he noticed an envelope placed neatly on his desk. It was sealed with a wax emblem—the royal insignia of the Valerius family.

Noah's brow furrowed as he picked it up, breaking the seal carefully. Inside was a finely written note on crisp parchment:

*"Noah,

I would like to continue our conversation from earlier. Please meet me in Study Room 3B tomorrow at noon.

Regards,

Lucian Valerius"*

He read the note twice, weighing its implications. What could the Crown Prince want with him in private?

Noah sat down, the envelope still in his hand. A mixture of intrigue and apprehension settled over him. The academy was full of surprises, but this was beyond anything he had anticipated.

He placed the note back on the desk, his gaze lingering on the royal seal. Tomorrow promised to be interesting.
