Chapter 32
The creature towered over Noah and Lily, its massive form a grotesque amalgamation of twisted roots, jagged stones, and pulsating mana crystals embedded haphazardly across its body. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and a faint, acrid tang that clung to the back of the throat. The beast's deep, resonant growls reverberated through the confined space, echoing off the enclosing walls of roots that had separated them from the others.
Noah's heart pounded in his chest, but his expression remained steady. He cast a quick glance at Lily beside him. Her pale silver eyes were wide, a mixture of fear and determination flickering within them. Her soft blue hair, slightly disheveled, framed her face as she clenched her hands tightly, tiny tendrils of icy mist beginning to emanate from her fingertips.
"Stay close," Noah advised, his voice calm despite the tension coiling within him.
Lily nodded wordlessly, swallowing hard. She tried to steady her breathing, the cool air filling her lungs as she summoned her mana.
The beast shifted, its glowing eyes locking onto them. With a sudden, thunderous movement, it lunged forward, massive limbs cracking the ground beneath it.
Noah reacted swiftly, raising his hands and channeling his energy. "Repulse!" he commanded, releasing a shockwave of mana that collided with the creature's chest. The force pushed the beast back momentarily, causing it to stagger.
"Lily, aim for the crystals!" Noah called out. "They might be its weak points."
She hesitated for a fraction of a second before raising her hands. Concentrating, she formed jagged spears of ice in the air around her. With a sharp gesture, she sent them hurtling toward the beast.
The ice spears struck the creature's left arm, shattering against the hardened bark and stone. One spear grazed a mana crystal, causing a small crack to appear and eliciting a pained roar from the beast.
"It worked!" Lily exclaimed softly, a hint of surprise in her voice.
But the beast was quick to recover. It slammed its massive fists into the ground, sending shockwaves that rippled through the earth. Noah and Lily struggled to maintain their footing as the ground trembled violently.
The creature's roots lashed out like serpents, whipping toward them from multiple angles. Noah sidestepped one tendril, then ducked under another, his movements precise and fluid.
"Lily, watch out!" he shouted, seeing a root lunging toward her.
She turned just in time to see it, her eyes widening. Instinctively, she raised an ice barrier, but her reaction was a split second too slow. The root struck the barrier, shattering it and knocking her backward.
Noah's gaze sharpened. "Hang on!"
He sprinted toward her, activating Strong Left. His left arm glowed with a fierce energy as he delivered a powerful punch to the attacking root, splintering it upon impact.
Lily scrambled to her feet, her breath coming in quick gasps. "I'm sorry," she murmured, frustration mingling with fear.
"Don't apologize," Noah said firmly. "We can do this. Remember how you handled the water elementals."
She took a shaky breath, nodding. "Right."
The beast roared again, the sound resonating deep within their chests. It raised both arms, bringing them down in a crushing overhead strike.
"Move!" Noah yelled.
They dove in opposite directions as the beast's fists slammed into the ground, debris flying from the impact. Noah rolled to his feet, eyes scanning the creature for any sign of vulnerability.
His gaze settled on the largest mana crystal embedded in the beast's chest. It pulsed with a steady light, seeming to synchronize with the creature's movements.
"The central crystal," he thought aloud. "If we can damage it, we might be able to weaken or stop it."
"Lily, focus your ice magic on the central crystal!" he called out.
She looked at the beast, then back at Noah. "But it's too well-protected..."
"I'll distract it," he assured her. "Just be ready."
She hesitated but then set her jaw, determination flashing in her eyes. "Okay."
Noah squared his shoulders, taking a deep breath. He charged toward the beast, zigzagging to avoid the roots that lashed out at him. Drawing upon his mana, he propelled himself upward, leaping onto one of the creature's massive arms.
The beast snarled, trying to shake him off. Noah clung tightly, using Strong Left to deliver a series of strikes along its arm, aiming for the smaller crystals.
"Lily, now!" he shouted.
From her position, Lily focused intently on the central crystal. She extended her hands, the air around her dropping sharply in temperature. A swirling mass of icy energy coalesced before her, forming into a spear of pure ice, its surface shimmering with intricate patterns.
"Please work," she whispered, releasing the spear with a forceful thrust.
The ice spear sailed through the air with deadly precision, piercing the space between the beast's protective limbs. It struck the central crystal dead-on, a resounding crack echoing as fissures spread across its surface.
The beast let out an ear-splitting roar, its movements becoming erratic. Energy surged wildly from the damaged crystal, causing the creature to stagger.
Noah seized the opportunity. He leaped from the beast's arm, landing nimbly on the ground. Summoning his remaining strength, he channeled his mana into one final Repulse, directing it at the fractured crystal.
The shockwave struck with full force, shattering the crystal entirely. The beast convulsed, its form beginning to crumble as the energies holding it together unraveled.
"Get back!" Noah warned.
He and Lily retreated as the creature collapsed inward, dissolving into a cascade of roots and stones that settled into a lifeless heap.
Silence fell over the enclosure, broken only by their heavy breathing. The oppressive aura that had suffused the air dissipated, replaced by a cool, calming breeze.
"We did it," Lily said softly, a note of disbelief in her voice.
Noah turned to her, a genuine smile breaking through his weary expression. "You were amazing."
She looked down, a faint blush coloring her cheeks. "I couldn't have done it without you."
He shook his head. "You found the strength within yourself. I'm glad I could help, but you made it happen."
Before she could respond, the walls of roots surrounding them began to retract, curling back into the ground and clearing the way forward.
"Looks like the path is open again," Noah observed.
They walked cautiously out of the enclosure, emerging into a familiar part of the forest. The ethereal glow of the flora cast dappled patterns on the ground, and the ambient sounds of the forest gradually returned.
"Noah! Lily!" a voice called out.
They turned to see Sienna and Theo hurrying toward them. Relief was evident on their faces.
"Thank goodness you're safe," Sienna said, her usually composed demeanor softened by genuine concern.
"What happened?" Theo asked, eyes wide. "We got separated, and then there were these weird creatures..."
"We encountered a mana beast," Noah explained. "It trapped us, but we managed to defeat it."
Lily nodded in agreement, though she seemed content to let Noah do the talking.
Sienna's eyes narrowed thoughtfully. "A mana beast of that caliber shouldn't have been part of this level of the simulation. It's as if the challenges are intensifying."
"Maybe it's designed to test how we handle unexpected threats," Noah suggested.
Theo shuddered. "Well, I don't like it. I got chased by these creepy little shadow things. Not fun."
Sienna offered a small smile. "At least we're back together now."
Lily glanced around. "Where's Edric?"
The group exchanged uneasy looks.
"He hasn't returned yet," Sienna said quietly. "We haven't seen him since he left."
Noah's expression grew serious. "We need to find him."
Theo hesitated. "Are you sure he wants to be found? He's been pretty clear about wanting to do things his own way."
"Regardless of his feelings toward us, we can't leave him out here alone," Noah insisted.
Sienna nodded in agreement. "It's important we stay together."
Lily fidgeted with her sleeves. "I hope he's okay."
Theo sighed. "Alright. Let's keep an eye out for him as we move forward."
As they delved deeper into the forest, the environment grew increasingly unsettling. The trees twisted into unnatural shapes, their branches entwined like grasping hands. Bioluminescent fungi emitted a faint, eerie glow, casting elongated shadows that seemed to shift and writhe at the edges of their vision.
The air was thick with humidity, and a subtle, almost imperceptible whispering drifted through the canopy. It was as if the forest itself was alive, watching their every move.
Noah felt a creeping unease settle over him. The mana around them was distorted, fluctuations creating pockets of instability. He remained vigilant, senses attuned to any sign of danger.
"Does anyone else feel like we're being watched?" Theo asked nervously, his eyes darting around.
"Yes," Sienna replied, her tone measured. "The ambient mana is behaving erratically."
Lily stayed close to Noah, her earlier confidence waning in the oppressive atmosphere.
"Stay alert," Noah advised. "And try to conserve your energy."
They continued along a narrow path, the ground beneath them uneven and littered with gnarled roots that seemed to shift subtly underfoot.
Suddenly, a rustling sound came from ahead. The group halted, instincts on edge.
From the shadows, Edric emerged, his figure illuminated sporadically by the glow of the fungi. His clothes were dirtied, and a shallow cut marked his cheek, but he appeared otherwise unharmed.
"Edric!" Theo exclaimed, relief mingled with surprise.
Edric's gaze swept over them, settling on Noah with an intensity that was almost palpable. His eyes were hard, and a faint aura of fire mana flickered around his hands.
"Glad to see you're okay," Noah began cautiously.
Edric's expression twisted into a bitter smirk. "Are you?"
Sienna stepped forward. "We were worried about you. The forest has become more dangerous."
He ignored her, his focus unwavering on Noah. "You think you're so superior, don't you, Rosweld?"
Noah's brow furrowed. "I don't understand."
"Don't play dumb," Edric snapped. "You've been undermining me since the beginning. Turning the others against me."
"That's not true," Noah replied evenly. "We've all been trying to work together."
Edric scoffed. "You and your false humility. Acting like a leader when you're nothing but a pretender."
Theo raised his hands in a placating gesture. "Hey, let's all just calm down. We're on the same team."
"Stay out of this," Edric warned, a flare of fire igniting briefly in his palm.
Lily took a step back, her eyes wide with apprehension.
Sienna's voice was firm. "Edric, this isn't the time or place for this. We need to focus on completing the challenge and getting out safely."
He shot her a withering glare. "Of course you'd side with him."
Noah held up his hands. "Edric, I don't want to fight you. We're all under a lot of stress—"
"Enough!" Edric interrupted, his mana surging. "If you want to lead so badly, prove you're worthy. Face me."
Noah's jaw tightened. He could see the turmoil in Edric's eyes—pride wounded, anger festering.
"I don't want to fight," Noah repeated. "This won't solve anything."
"Afraid you'll lose?" Edric taunted.
Noah took a steadying breath. "This isn't about winning or losing."
Edric's expression hardened. "It's exactly about that. If you won't challenge me, then you're admitting you're unfit to lead."
The tension in the air was thick, the surrounding forest seeming to hold its breath.
Sienna glanced between them, concern etched on her features. "This is pointless. We're wasting time and energy."
Edric's gaze never left Noah. "Well, Rosweld? What's it going to be?"
Noah considered his options. Avoiding the confrontation might deescalate the situation, but Edric's resentment could jeopardize their safety moving forward. Perhaps facing him now would allow them to clear the air.
He met Edric's stare calmly. "If this is what it takes for us to move forward as a team, then fine."
Lily's hand brushed his arm lightly. "Noah..."
He gave her a reassuring look. "It'll be okay."
Theo looked uneasy. "Are you sure about this?"
Noah nodded. "Stay back."
Edric's lips curled into a satisfied smirk. "Finally showing some backbone."
They moved a few paces apart, the ground between them marked by scattered leaves and the faint glow of luminescent fungi.
"First to yield?" Noah suggested.
"Winner leads the team," Edric countered.
"Agreed."
Sienna sighed softly but stepped back with Theo and Lily to give them space.
Edric wasted no time. He summoned flames to his hands, the fire swirling and intensifying as he channeled his mana.
Noah watched carefully, analyzing Edric's stance and the flow of his energy. He needed to stay focused, avoid unnecessary risks.
"Let's see how you handle this," Edric declared, thrusting his hands forward.
A torrent of fire surged toward Noah, the heat radiating fiercely.
Noah sidestepped, activating Repulse to create a barrier that diverted the flames. The fire split around him, scorching the ground but leaving him unharmed.
Edric narrowed his eyes. "Not bad."
He followed up with a rapid series of fireballs, their trajectories unpredictable.
Noah moved with precision, weaving between the attacks. He could feel the heat singe the air around him, the smell of smoke filling his senses.
Seizing an opening, Noah closed the distance between them. He aimed a controlled Strong Left at Edric's right side, ensuring it was powerful enough to make a point but not cause serious harm.
Edric anticipated the move, erecting a wall of flame between them. The force of Noah's punch dispersed the flames, but the delay gave Edric time to reposition.
"You're going to have to try harder than that," Edric taunted.
Noah remained composed. "This doesn't have to continue."
"Still lecturing," Edric spat. "Fight me seriously!"
He unleashed a spiral of fire that spiraled toward Noah, the flames intertwining like a fiery serpent.
Noah assessed the attack. Direct confrontation would be risky. Instead, he channeled mana into his legs, enhancing his speed. He dashed to the side, the flames narrowly missing him.
Pivoting, Noah extended his hand, gathering energy. "Repulse!"
The shockwave rippled toward Edric, who braced himself. The force pushed him back a few steps, his feet sliding on the loose earth.
Edric's frustration was evident. His mana flared brighter, the intensity of his flames increasing.
"Fine," he growled. "No more holding back."
He began forming a large sphere of fire above his palm, the heat distorting the air around it.
Sienna's eyes widened. "Edric, that's too much!"
"Stop!" Lily pleaded. "You'll hurt him!"
Edric ignored them, his focus solely on Noah.
Noah realized the danger. He couldn't allow the attack to land—not just for his own sake but for the safety of everyone present.
He steadied himself, drawing upon his deepest reserves. Perhaps it was time to reveal a bit more of his capabilities.
As Edric hurled the massive fireball toward him, Noah removed the bandage from his right eye. His heterochromatic gaze locked onto the incoming attack, the right eye shimmering with an inner light.
Time seemed to slow. He could see the mana patterns within the fireball, the fluctuations and weak points.
Channeling his mana, he extended both hands. "Disperse!"
A focused pulse emanated from him, targeting the structural weaknesses he observed. The fireball wavered, its form destabilizing before it burst into harmless embers that scattered in the air.
Edric stared in disbelief. "What...?"
Noah replaced the bandage quickly. "This needs to end, Edric."
Edric's shock turned to rage. "How dare you use some trick against me!"
He charged forward recklessly, flames engulfing his fists.
Noah prepared to defend but knew that escalating further could have serious consequences.
Before they could collide, a powerful gust of wind swept between them, forcing them apart.
"That's enough!" Professor Marek's voice boomed, his figure materializing from the shadows.
The sudden appearance of their instructor caused everyone to freeze.
"M-Marek?" Theo stammered.
The professor's expression was stern. "This exercise was meant to test your teamwork and adaptability, not to pit you against each other."
Edric's flames extinguished as he stepped back, a mix of anger and embarrassment crossing his features.
Noah lowered his hands, relief mingling with apprehension.
Professor Marek looked between them. "We'll discuss this further outside the simulation."
With a wave of his hand, the environment around them began to dissolve. The trees, roots, and eerie glow faded, replaced by the familiar surroundings of the academy's training grounds.
The simulation had ended.
They stood in the training arena, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows. Other students milled about, some watching curiously.
"Gather your belongings and report to the debriefing room," Marek instructed. "Now."
The group complied silently, the weight of the situation settling upon them.
As they walked, Lily fell into step beside Noah. "Are you okay?"
He offered a small nod. "I'm fine. Thanks."
Sienna approached as well. "That was... unexpected."
Theo sighed. "I thought we were done for when Marek showed up."
Edric walked ahead, his posture rigid.
Noah glanced at his teammates. "We'll handle whatever comes next together."
They entered the debriefing room, the atmosphere heavy with unspoken tensions.
Professor Marek stood before them, arms crossed. "I expected better from all of you, especially in terms of teamwork."
He looked pointedly at Edric and Noah. "Personal conflicts have no place in critical situations. Lives could be at stake."
Edric remained silent, his gaze fixed on the floor.
Marek continued. "We'll address this matter fully tomorrow. For now, reflect on your actions and consider how you can improve—not just as mages but as members of a team."
He dismissed them with a curt nod.
As they exited the room, the sun had begun to set, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink.
"I'm heading back," Theo said quietly. "See you all later."
Sienna gave a brief wave. "Take care."
Lily hesitated before speaking. "Noah, thank you for standing up for us."
He offered a weary smile. "It's what any of us would have done."
She shook her head gently. "Not everyone."
Edric brushed past them without a word, heading toward the dormitories.
Sienna watched him go. "I hope he finds a way to reconcile."
Noah sighed. "Me too."
They parted ways, each lost in their thoughts.
As Noah walked toward his own dormitory, he contemplated the day's events. The challenges they faced had tested more than just their abilities—they had revealed fractures that needed mending.
He looked up at the fading light, determination settling within him.
"Tomorrow is a new day," he thought. "I'll do what I can to make things right."
