Chapter 14
The night enveloped Rustfield in a tranquil embrace, the soft glow of lanterns casting a warm light along the cobblestone streets. Stars twinkled above like scattered diamonds, and the gentle rustling of leaves provided a soothing backdrop. Noah stood outside the Lannett's restaurant, gazing up at the sky. His dark brown hair tousled slightly in the evening breeze, and his right eye throbbed faintly beneath the bandage—a subtle reminder of the power it concealed.
Elara approached quietly, her soft brown hair shimmering under the moonlight. Her deep green eyes reflected both hesitation and determination as she gathered the courage to speak. Clad in practical attire that still hinted at her noble heritage, she joined Noah, her presence both calming and stirring.
"Noah," she began softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "There's something I need to tell you."
He turned to face her, sensing the weight of her words. "What is it?" he asked gently, his gaze meeting hers.
She took a deep breath, her hands clasping together nervously. "I... I believe that you might be—"
A sudden, chilling howl echoed through the night, cutting her off. The sound was unnatural, a haunting cry that sent a shiver down their spines. Noah's right eye pulsed intensely, a sharp pain shooting through his head.
"Did you hear that?" he asked, his voice tense.
Elara's expression shifted from apprehension to alertness. "Yes," she replied, her eyes scanning the darkness. "Something's not right."
Another howl pierced the air, closer this time, followed by the distant sounds of chaos—screams, crashes, and the unmistakable growl of beasts.
"The village is under attack!" Noah exclaimed, urgency gripping him.
Elara nodded sharply. "We need to alert the others. Come on!"
They sprinted toward the village center, their boots pounding against the cobblestones. The peaceful atmosphere of Rustfield was shattered, replaced by panic and confusion. Villagers ran in all directions, some seeking shelter, others trying to gather loved ones.
As they reached the central square, they found Kyren already issuing orders. His sleek black hair was illuminated by the flickering flames of overturned lanterns, and his crimson eyes were sharp with focus. He moved with authority, directing villagers to safety and organizing a defensive line.
"Mira! Kael!" Kyren shouted. "Get everyone inside and barricade the doors!"
Mira emerged from a side street, her messy brown hair flying wildly around her face. Her warm amber eyes were wide with concern, and she clutched her staff tightly, the fiery runes along its length glowing brightly. Kael was right behind her, his light gray hair disheveled, golden eyes alert, and feline ears flattened against his head.
"Noah! Elara!" Mira called out as she spotted them. "What's happening?"
"Corrupted mana beasts are attacking the village," Noah replied breathlessly. "We heard them just now."
Kyren approached them swiftly. "They're coming from all directions. We need to hold them off while the villagers evacuate."
Elara drew her sword, the blade catching the light. "Where are they the strongest?"
"East and south entrances are under heavy assault," Kyren answered. "Noah, with your ability to see mana patterns, we need you to identify their movements."
Noah removed the bandage from his right eye, wincing as the influx of mana patterns flooded his vision. The world around him transformed into a complex web of energies—some pure, others twisted and dark.
"They're converging on the eastern gate," he reported. "A large group is attempting to breach the defenses there."
Kyren nodded. "Elara, Noah, with me. Mira, Kael, continue evacuating the villagers and then support us when you can."
"Be careful," Mira said, her eyes lingering on Noah.
"You too," he replied, offering a brief, reassuring smile.
The trio made their way toward the eastern gate, weaving through the chaos. The sounds of battle grew louder—the clash of metal, the snarls of beasts, the cries of the frightened. Fires had broken out along some of the buildings, casting eerie shadows that danced menacingly.
As they approached, they saw the village guards struggling against a horde of corrupted mana beasts. The creatures were monstrous—twisted amalgamations of shadow and form, their eyes glowing with malevolent light. Their very presence seemed to distort the air around them.
Kyren drew his sword, water magic swirling around the blade. "We need to reinforce the line," he declared.
Elara stepped forward, her posture confident. She raised her free hand, and a soft glow emanated from her palm. In an instant, a light rapier materialized—a blade of pure luminescence that contrasted starkly against the darkness.
Noah stared in surprise. "You can wield light magic?"
She glanced at him, a hint of a smile playing on her lips despite the situation. "There's a lot you don't know about me."
Before he could respond, a beast lunged at them, its claws extended. Kyren met it head-on, his sword slicing cleanly through its limb. Water surged from his blade, dousing the creature in a torrent that hissed and steamed upon contact.
Elara moved with grace, her light rapier cutting through the beasts with ease. Each strike left trails of shimmering light, and the creatures recoiled from her attacks, their forms destabilizing.
Noah joined the fray, his sword adjusting to his grip. Using his right eye, he identified the weak points in the beasts—their corrupted cores. With precise strikes, he targeted these areas, causing the creatures to dissolve into wisps of darkness.
"Keep pushing them back!" Kyren shouted over the din. "We can't let them break through!"
The battle intensified as more beasts poured in. The guards fought valiantly but were being overwhelmed by sheer numbers.
Noah's eye throbbed painfully, the influx of corrupted mana taking its toll. "They're being summoned," he realized aloud. "Someone is controlling them."
Kyren spared him a glance. "Can you locate the source?"
Noah focused, scanning the chaotic mana patterns. Amidst the turmoil, he spotted a concentrated mass of corrupted energy outside the village perimeter. "There! In the forest north of here!"
Elara nodded. "If we can stop the summoner, we can turn the tide."
Kyren considered for a moment. "Agreed. But we can't all leave the gate undefended."
"I'll go," Noah volunteered. "With my eye, I can navigate through the mana disturbances."
Elara stepped forward. "I'm coming with you."
Kyren hesitated. "Are you sure?"
She met his gaze firmly. "Yes. Together, we stand a better chance."
Kyren relented. "Very well. Be careful. I'll hold the line here."
They exchanged a brief nod before Noah and Elara sprinted toward the northern forest. The sounds of battle faded slightly as they left the village behind, replaced by the unsettling quiet of the woods. The trees loomed overhead, their branches intertwining to form a canopy that blocked out much of the moonlight.
Noah's vision guided them, the corrupted mana patterns growing stronger as they approached the source. The air was thick with a malevolent energy that seemed to sap the warmth from their surroundings.
"Stay alert," Elara whispered, her eyes scanning the shadows.
They emerged into a small clearing, where the source of the corruption became evident. A figure stood at the center—a tall, cloaked individual whose features were obscured. Tendrils of dark energy spiraled around them, seeping into the ground like a spreading poison.
"Welcome," the figure said, their voice echoing unnaturally. "I've been expecting you."
"Who are you?" Noah demanded, gripping his sword tightly.
The figure chuckled softly. "A herald of what's to come. And you, Noah Rosweld, are of particular interest to me."
Elara's eyes narrowed. "What do you want with him?"
"Ah, Elara Arden," the figure replied. "Always the protective sister."
Shock flickered across Noah's face. "Sister?"
Elara stiffened but kept her gaze fixed on the stranger. "How do you know who we are?"
"I know many things," the figure said cryptically. "Your destinies are intertwined with forces beyond your understanding."
Noah's mind raced, but there was no time to process the revelation. The figure raised a hand, and a surge of corrupted mana erupted from the ground. A massive beast materialized—a grotesque titan towering over them, its eyes blazing with unbridled fury.
"Let's see how you fare against this," the figure taunted.
The beast roared, the sound reverberating through the forest. It lunged at them with astonishing speed for its size. Noah and Elara dodged in opposite directions as the creature's massive claw smashed into the spot where they'd stood moments before, leaving a crater in the earth.
Elara reacted swiftly, channeling her mana into her rapier. She dashed forward, aiming for the beast's leg, her blade slicing through shadowy flesh. The creature bellowed but seemed largely unfazed.
"Noah!" she called out. "We need a plan!"
He focused his right eye on the beast, analyzing its mana structure. "Its core is heavily shielded," he observed. "We'll need to weaken it first."
Elara nodded. "I'll distract it. You find a way to break through."
She launched herself at the beast again, her movements fluid and precise. Her rapier flashed as she delivered a series of quick strikes, each one chipping away at the creature's defenses.
Noah searched the surrounding area, his eye catching glimpses of the corrupted mana tethering the beast to the summoner. An idea formed in his mind.
"The summoner is maintaining its strength!" he shouted. "If we can sever the connection, the beast will weaken!"
Elara glanced toward the cloaked figure. "Understood. Cover me!"
She sprinted toward the summoner, weaving between the beast's attempts to block her path. Noah followed closely, using his sword to deflect stray attacks.
The summoner watched their approach with apparent amusement. "Bold," they remarked. "But futile."
They extended their hand, and bolts of dark energy shot toward Elara. She raised a barrier of light, deflecting the attacks but slowing her advance.
"You're persistent," the figure noted.
"Enough talk!" Elara retorted, pushing forward.
Noah saw an opening. While the summoner was focused on Elara, he circled around, approaching from the side. Gathering his mana, he prepared to strike.
Just as he was about to attack, the summoner whirled around, their hood falling back slightly to reveal piercing eyes that seemed to bore into his soul. "Clever boy," they sneered.
A blast of corrupted mana erupted from the ground, sending Noah flying backward. He landed hard, the impact knocking the wind out of him.
"Noah!" Elara cried out, momentarily distracted.
The beast took advantage of her lapse in focus, swiping at her with a massive claw. She dodged, but not entirely—the force grazed her side, and she stumbled, pain flashing across her face.
The summoner laughed darkly. "Such fragile bonds."
Struggling to his feet, Noah refused to give up. "I won't let you hurt her," he declared, determination fueling his movements.
He channeled all his remaining mana into his sword, the blade glowing with an intense light that rivaled Elara's rapier. His right eye blazed, the patterns of mana converging into a single point of clarity.
Elara regained her footing, her gaze meeting Noah's. A silent understanding passed between them.
"Together," she said firmly.
They charged simultaneously. The summoner unleashed a torrent of dark energy, but Elara's light magic formed a protective barrier around them. The air crackled as opposing forces collided.
As they closed in, the beast moved to intercept them, but faltered—the tether between it and the summoner weakened by their combined assault.
"Now!" Noah shouted.
Elara directed a beam of concentrated light at the summoner, who raised a shield to deflect it. At the same moment, Noah leaped into the air, bringing his sword down with all his might upon the tethering point connecting the summoner to the beast.
There was a blinding flash as the connection shattered. The beast roared in agony, its form destabilizing.
"No!" the summoner hissed, momentarily thrown off balance.
Seizing the opportunity, Elara closed the distance, her rapier aimed straight at the summoner's core. But before she could strike, they vanished into a swirl of shadows, their parting words echoing ominously.
"This is far from over."
The beast dissolved into nothingness, the corrupted mana dispersing into the night. Silence settled over the clearing, broken only by the sounds of their labored breathing.
Noah lowered his sword, the glow fading as exhaustion set in. "Are you okay?" he asked Elara, concern evident in his voice.
She nodded, though her hand rested on the spot where she'd been grazed. "It's just a scratch," she assured him. "What about you?"
"I'm fine," he replied, though he swayed slightly.
She steadied him, her touch gentle. "We should return to the village. The others might need our help."
He agreed, and they made their way back through the forest. The tension eased slightly now that the immediate threat had been neutralized, but questions lingered between them.
As they re-entered Rustfield, they saw that the villagers had regained some semblance of order. Fires were being extinguished, and the wounded were receiving care. Mira and Kael were directing efforts, their leadership helping to restore calm.
Kyren approached them, relief flashing across his typically stoic features. "You succeeded," he stated.
"Yes," Elara confirmed. "The summoner retreated after we broke their connection."
"Good," Kyren said. "We managed to repel the beasts here as well."
Mira hurried over, her eyes filled with concern. "Are you both alright?"
"We're fine," Noah assured her. "Just tired."
Kael joined them, his expression serious. "Did you find out who was behind the attack?"
Elara exchanged a glance with Noah. "We encountered a cloaked figure. They seemed to know a lot about us."
"They called themselves a herald," Noah added. "And they knew our names."
Kyren's eyes narrowed. "This is troubling. If they're targeting you specifically, we need to be cautious."
Elara took a deep breath, turning to Noah. "About what I was trying to tell you earlier..."
He met her gaze, a mix of emotions swirling within him. "You said you thought I might be your brother."
She nodded, her eyes earnest. "Yes. Everything matches—the age, the name, the abilities. When I saw you, I felt a connection."
Noah considered her words, memories stirring faintly at the edges of his consciousness. "I don't remember much about my past," he admitted. "But when I'm around you, there's a familiarity I can't explain."
Mira and Kael listened quietly, understanding the significance of the moment.
Kyren placed a hand on Noah's shoulder. "Regardless of the past, what's important is that we're stronger together."
Elara smiled softly. "Agreed. We can uncover the truth in time."
Noah felt a sense of acceptance wash over him. "Thank you," he said sincerely. "For everything."
The group stood together, a newfound unity forming amidst the adversity they faced.
As dawn began to break, casting a golden hue over Rustfield, the villagers emerged to assess the damage. Though shaken, there was a resilient spirit among them.
Mrs. Lannett approached the group, gratitude evident in her eyes. "You all protected us when we needed it most," she said warmly. "We're in your debt."
"Just doing what we could," Mira replied modestly.
Kael stretched, his feline ears twitching. "Looks like we have a lot of rebuilding to do."
"Indeed," Kyren agreed. "But for now, rest. You've all earned it."
Noah gazed out at the horizon, the rising sun signaling a new beginning. Despite the challenges ahead, he felt hopeful.
Elara stood beside him, her presence comforting. "Whatever comes next, we'll face it together."
He nodded, a small smile forming. "Together."
