Chapter 13

The sun hung low in the sky, casting a warm, golden hue over Rustfield. The villagers bustled about, preparing for the arrival of a noble guest—a rare event that stirred both excitement and curiosity. Banners were hung, and the streets were swept clean. Word had spread that Lady Elara Arden, of the esteemed Arden family, was coming to meet with Kyren.

Noah stood outside the Lannett's restaurant, the gentle breeze ruffling his dark brown hair. He adjusted the bandage over his right eye, feeling the familiar throb beneath it. Clutched in his hand was his sword, the metal cool against his skin. Beside him were Mira and Kael. Mira's messy brown hair was pulled back into a loose braid, her warm amber eyes reflecting her anticipation. Kael's light gray hair fell over his golden eyes, his feline ears twitching with excitement.

"Can't believe today's the day," Kael said, a grin spreading across his face. "A real noble, here in Rustfield!"

Mira nodded, her grip tightening on her staff adorned with fiery runes. "I wonder what she's like. Kyren said she's important."

Noah remained quiet, his thoughts drifting. He couldn't shake the feeling of unease that had settled in his stomach since learning of Lady Elara's visit. "I just hope we make a good impression."

Mira placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "We'll be fine. Just be yourself."

He offered a small smile. "Yeah, you're right."

From down the road, the sound of hooves clattering against cobblestone drew their attention. A luxurious carriage bearing the Arden family crest—a tree entwined with flames—came into view. Its polished mahogany surface gleamed, and intricate silver detailing caught the sunlight, creating a dazzling spectacle. Flanking the carriage were several armored guards, their uniforms immaculate.

As the carriage came to a halt in the village square, villagers gathered around, murmuring among themselves. Kyren stepped forward, his sleek black hair and crimson eyes making him stand out even among the guards. He gestured for Noah, Mira, and Kael to join him.

"Remember," Kyren said, his tone firm yet gentle, "be respectful and speak only when spoken to."

They nodded in unison.

The carriage door opened, and a young woman stepped out gracefully. Elara Arden's soft brown hair cascaded over her shoulders, and her deep green eyes surveyed the crowd with a calm confidence. She wore an elegant gown of emerald silk, adorned with subtle gold embroidery that hinted at her noble status without being ostentatious.

Kyren approached her and bowed slightly. "Welcome to Rustfield, Lady Elara."

She smiled warmly. "Thank you, Kyren. It's good to see you again."

Kyren straightened and turned toward the trio. "May I introduce the individuals I mentioned in my reports?"

Elara's gaze shifted to them, her eyes curious.

Kyren began the introductions. "This is Mira Lannett, skilled in fire magic and daughter of the proprietors of the local restaurant."

Mira curtsied awkwardly. "It's an honor to meet you, Lady Elara."

Elara nodded graciously. "The pleasure is mine."

"And this is Kael Windstride," Kyren continued, "a Felinor with a talent for wind magic and unmatched agility."

Kael bowed with a flourish, his feline ears twitching. "Welcome to our humble village."

Elara smiled. "Thank you, Kael."

Kyren then gestured toward Noah. "And finally, this is Noah Rosweld."

At the mention of Noah's full name, Elara's eyes widened. Her composed demeanor faltered as a wave of emotions washed over her. Memories she had kept locked away flooded back—the laughter of a young boy, the warmth of a family lost to tragedy, and the haunting echoes of a name she thought she'd never hear again.

She stumbled slightly, her hand reaching out to grasp the carriage door for support.

Kyren noticed her reaction. "Lady Elara, are you alright?"

Elara blinked rapidly, regaining her composure. "Yes, I... I'm fine. Just a momentary dizziness."

Noah stepped forward, concern etched on his face. "Are you sure you're okay?"

Her eyes met his, and for a brief moment, she saw the reflection of her own deep green eyes staring back at her. "Yes, thank you," she replied softly.

Mira and Kael exchanged puzzled glances, sensing that something unusual had just occurred.

Elara cleared her throat, forcing a smile. "It's a pleasure to meet you all."

"Shall we proceed to a more comfortable setting?" Kyren suggested, attempting to ease the tension.

"Yes, of course," Elara agreed, still stealing glances at Noah.

At the Lannett's Restaurant

The group settled in a private room of the restaurant. The cozy space was filled with the comforting aromas of freshly baked bread and herbal tea. Mrs. Lannett had gone to great lengths to prepare a welcoming environment, her reddish-brown hair tied back as she bustled about, ensuring everything was perfect.

"Please, make yourselves at home," she said warmly, setting a tray of pastries on the table.

Elara took a seat opposite Noah, her gaze subtly observing him as the others engaged in light conversation.

"So, Lady Elara," Mira began, "Kyren mentioned you're here to discuss the recent disturbances?"

Elara nodded, her attention shifting to Mira. "Yes. There have been reports of corrupted mana spreading throughout the kingdom. Rustfield, due to its proximity to several ley lines, is particularly vulnerable."

Kael leaned forward, his golden eyes keen. "We've noticed strange creatures appearing lately. Could they be connected?"

"Most likely," Elara replied. "These creatures are manifestations of corrupted mana. They pose a significant threat if not dealt with promptly."

Noah listened intently, his right eye throbbing beneath the bandage. He felt compelled to speak. "Is there a way to stop the spread?"

Elara met his gaze, her heart skipping a beat at the familiarity she found there. "We're working on identifying the source. Kyren has been instrumental in gathering information."

Kyren inclined his head modestly.

"Perhaps we can help," Noah offered. "We've been training hard, and with my ability to see mana patterns, maybe we can find something others might miss."

Elara's eyes widened slightly. "You can see mana patterns?"

Noah hesitated before nodding. "Yes. After an encounter with a serpent's venom, my right eye was... altered."

She smiled softly. "That's quite extraordinary."

Mira beamed. "Noah's been amazing. He's helped us navigate through some tough situations."

Kael grinned. "Couldn't have done it without him."

Elara felt a swell of emotion. The camaraderie between them reminded her of times long past. She took a deep breath. "Noah, may I ask—do you know anything about your family?"

An uneasy silence settled over the table. Noah shifted uncomfortably. "I... don't have any memories of my family. I was found near Rustfield when I was very young."

Elara's suspicions deepened. "I see. I'm sorry to pry."

"It's alright," he replied quietly. "I've made peace with it."

Kyren observed the exchange, his crimson eyes reflecting a hint of understanding.

Mrs. Lannett entered, breaking the tension. "Is everything to your liking?"

"Yes, thank you," Elara responded graciously.

First-Person POV – Noah

I couldn't shake the feeling that Lady Elara knew something about me—something important. Her questions about my family stirred a longing I'd buried deep inside. Part of me wanted to ask her outright, but fear held me back.

"Hey, you okay?" Mira's voice pulled me from my thoughts.

I glanced at her, forcing a smile. "Yeah, just thinking."

She gave me a sympathetic look. "If you ever want to talk about it..."

"Thanks," I said, appreciating her concern.

Across the table, Elara was engaged in conversation with Kael, but every so often, her eyes would flicker toward me. There was a sadness there, mixed with hope.

Third-Person POV

As the afternoon wore on, Elara and Kyren excused themselves to attend to official matters. Before leaving, Elara approached Noah.

"It was a pleasure meeting you," she said, her voice gentle.

"Likewise," Noah replied.

She hesitated for a moment. "Perhaps we can speak again soon."

"I'd like that," he said, curiosity piqued.

After they departed, Mira and Kael turned to Noah.

"That was... interesting," Kael remarked. "She seemed particularly interested in you."

Mira nodded. "Do you think she knows something about your past?"

Noah sighed. "I don't know. Maybe."

"Well, if anyone can help you find answers, it might be her," Mira suggested.

"Yeah," he agreed, though uncertainty gnawed at him.

Later That Evening

The trio decided to investigate a reported disturbance near the eastern edge of the village. The sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows across the fields. The air was cool, and a sense of foreboding hung heavy.

"Stay alert," Noah advised, removing the bandage from his right eye. The world shifted as the patterns of mana became visible, swirling and pulsing in intricate designs. "There's a strong presence of corrupted mana ahead."

Mira tightened her grip on her staff. "I can feel it too."

Kael's ears perked up. "I hear something—movement."

From the treeline emerged several shadowy creatures, their forms twisting and contorting unnaturally. Their eyes glowed with a malevolent red light, and a low growl emanated from them.

"Get ready!" Noah shouted.

The creatures charged. Mira cast a barrier of fire, slowing their advance. Kael darted forward, using his wind magic to enhance his speed as he slashed at the nearest foe. His dagger struck true, but the creature merely recoiled before regenerating.

"They're resilient," Kael noted, frustration evident.

Noah focused his enhanced vision, searching for weaknesses. "Aim for the cores—their centers. That's where the corrupted mana is most concentrated."

Mira nodded, launching a fireball at one creature's core. The impact caused it to shriek and disintegrate.

"Got it!" she exclaimed.

They fought fiercely, but more creatures emerged from the shadows, surrounding them.

"We can't keep this up," Kael panted.

Just then, a surge of water magic swept through the area, knocking several creatures back. Kyren appeared beside them, his sword glowing with energy.

"Need some assistance?" he asked.

Elara followed close behind, her hands glowing with a soft blue light. She chanted a spell, and a protective barrier formed around the group.

"Thank you," Noah said, relief evident in his voice.

"Focus on eliminating them while we hold the barrier," Elara instructed.

With renewed vigor, the trio coordinated their attacks. Noah guided them, pinpointing the creatures' weaknesses. One by one, the monsters fell until none remained.

Aftermath

Breathing heavily, they regrouped.

"Is everyone alright?" Kyren asked.

"A bit winded, but fine," Kael replied.

Mira wiped sweat from her brow. "That was intense."

Elara approached Noah, concern in her eyes. "You're injured."

He looked down to see a shallow cut on his arm. "It's nothing serious."

"Allow me," she offered, placing her hand over the wound. A warm light emanated from her palm, and the cut closed seamlessly.

"Thank you," he said, meeting her gaze.

She smiled softly. "You're welcome."

For a moment, they stood in silence, a connection forming that neither fully understood.

Kyren cleared his throat. "We need to discuss these attacks. They're becoming more frequent and coordinated."

"Agreed," Noah said. "It's like they're targeting specific areas."

Elara exchanged a glance with Kyren. "We should return and plan our next steps."

Back at the Restaurant

Gathered around a table strewn with maps and notes, the group delved into strategizing.

"The corrupted mana seems to be converging here," Noah pointed to a spot on the map.

"That's near the old ruins," Mira observed.

Kael scratched his head. "I thought those were just stories."

Elara shook her head. "They're very real, and possibly the source of the corruption."

Kyren folded his arms. "It's too dangerous to approach without a solid plan."

"We can't ignore it," Noah insisted. "If we can stop it at the source, the attacks might cease."

Mira placed a reassuring hand on his. "We'll figure it out together."

Kael grinned. "I'm up for an adventure."

Elara watched them, her resolve strengthening. "Very well. We'll prepare and set out at dawn."

First-Person POV – Elara

As the others discussed logistics, I found my gaze continually drifting to Noah. Every gesture, every expression reminded me of the brother I'd lost. The way he spoke with determination, the kindness in his eyes—it all felt so familiar.

I needed to know the truth.

"Kyren," I whispered, pulling him aside. "I believe he is my brother."

He regarded me solemnly. "I suspected as much."

"What should I do?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

"Tell him," Kyren advised gently. "He deserves to know."

Fear gripped me. "What if he doesn't remember? What if he rejects me?"

Kyren placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "You'll never know unless you try."

I nodded, taking a deep breath. "After we deal with the ruins. Then I'll tell him."

Late into the night, Noah stood outside, gazing up at the stars. The cool air was refreshing against his skin. He felt a presence beside him and turned to see Elara approaching.

"Couldn't sleep?" she asked softly.

He shook his head. "Too much on my mind."

She smiled faintly. "I understand."

They stood in comfortable silence for a moment.

"Noah," she began hesitantly, "there's something I need to tell you."

He looked at her expectantly. "What is it?"

Before she could respond, a chilling wind swept through the village, and a distant, haunting howl echoed in the night.

Noah's right eye pulsed intensely. "Something's coming."

Elara's expression turned serious. "We need to alert the others."

As they rushed to gather their companions, a shadowy figure watched from afar, eyes gleaming with sinister intent.

"Enjoy your peace while it lasts," the figure whispered. "Darkness is coming."
