Chapter 10

The massive serpent let out an earth-shaking roar that reverberated through the cavern, sending shards of mana-infused crystal clattering to the ground. Its obsidian scales shimmered faintly, catching the dim glow of the mana stones lining the walls. Each movement of its colossal body sent tremors through the floor, making it clear this was no ordinary beast.

Kyren stood his ground, sword drawn and glowing faintly with water magic. His red eyes narrowed in focus, but the tense set of his jaw betrayed his simmering anger.

"You three!" Kyren barked, barely glancing over his shoulder at Noah, Mira, and Kael, who were still frozen in place, their sheepish expressions quickly giving way to panic. "Get behind cover and stay there. Don't make me deal with you and this thing at the same time."

Noah opened his mouth to argue, but one look at Kyren's blazing crimson eyes made him think better of it. He grabbed Mira's arm and tugged her toward the nearest boulder, Kael close behind. The trio crouched low, peering cautiously over the edge of the jagged rock.

Kyren let out a frustrated breath, muttering under his breath, "Reckless kids..."

The serpent lunged at him, its jaws wide enough to crush a cart in a single bite. Kyren sidestepped with practiced ease, his sword slicing through the air in a fluid arc. A wave of water magic surged forward, colliding with the serpent's head and forcing it back momentarily. But the beast recovered quickly, its tail whipping toward Kyren with blinding speed. He barely had time to block, the impact sending him skidding backward across the stone floor.

From their hiding spot, Mira glared at Noah, her amber eyes blazing with frustration. "I told you this was a bad idea! Now we're stuck in the middle of this nightmare."

Kael, crouched beside her, rubbed the back of his head nervously. "Yeah, I'm starting to think we might have bitten off a little more than we can chew."

Noah, his wide brown eyes locked on the fight, didn't respond. His hands clenched into fists as he watched Kyren deflect another venomous strike from the serpent. The beast's movements were relentless, and even with Kyren's skill, the teen guard was clearly beginning to struggle.

"He needs help," Noah said suddenly, his voice low but resolute.

Mira's head snapped toward him. "Noah, don't you dare—"

But he was already moving.

Noah dashed out from behind the boulder, his heart pounding in his chest. He grabbed a jagged rock from the ground, channeling his mana into his arm. He felt the familiar hum of energy coursing through him, the raw power fueling his determination. With a grunt, he hurled the rock with all his might.

The projectile struck the serpent's snout with a loud crack, drawing its attention. Its molten gold eyes shifted toward Noah, its massive body coiling in preparation to strike.

"Noah!" Kyren shouted, his voice a mix of fury and disbelief. "What are you doing?! Get back!"

"No!" Noah yelled back, his stance firm despite the quiver in his legs. "I'll keep it distracted. You find an opening!"

Kyren growled under his breath, clearly torn between berating the boy and focusing on the serpent. "Fine," he muttered, his crimson eyes narrowing. "But don't get yourself killed."

The serpent lunged at Noah, its jaws snapping inches from his head. He dove to the side, rolling across the ground and narrowly avoiding the beast's tail as it smashed into the cavern floor.

Back behind the boulder, Mira's fists clenched so tightly her knuckles turned white. "That idiot," she muttered, fire sparking at her fingertips. Without another word, she sprinted out of cover.

"Mira, wait!" Kael called, but she didn't stop.

Mira raised her hands, summoning a blazing orb of fire. "Noah, duck!" she shouted.

Noah dropped to the ground as Mira hurled the fireball, the flames slamming into the serpent's side. The beast recoiled, its venomous attack dispersing into a harmless cloud of steam as Mira's magic burned it midair.

"I told you not to do this alone," Mira snapped, sliding to a stop beside Noah. "If you're going to be reckless, at least let me cover you."

Kael appeared moments later, his feline ears twitching nervously as he surveyed the scene. "Guess there's no backing out now," he said with a resigned sigh. Wind swirled around him, lifting his hair and giving him an almost weightless appearance. "Let's make this quick."

The trio moved as a team, their makeshift plan forged in the chaos of the battle. Mira focused on intercepting the serpent's venom with her fire magic, each burst of flames burning away the toxic liquid before it could reach them. Kael darted around the beast's coils with feline agility, using his wind magic to slash at its vulnerable joints and keep it off balance.

Noah, his mana-reinforced movements growing more confident with each passing moment, targeted the serpent's underbelly. He dodged its snapping jaws and thrashing tail, each punch driving his energy into the beast with raw determination.

For a while, their strategy seemed to be working. The serpent's movements grew more erratic, its attacks becoming less coordinated as it struggled to fend off the combined assault. But the battle's intensity was taking its toll. Mira's flames began to falter, her exhaustion evident in the sweat dripping down her face.

As she prepared another spell, a stray glob of venom slipped past her defenses, streaking toward Noah.

"Noah, look out!" Mira screamed.

Noah turned just in time to shield his face with his arm, but the venom splashed against his right eye. The searing pain was immediate, a blinding agony that sent him stumbling back with a guttural scream.

"Noah!" Mira yelled, rushing toward him. Her fire flickered uncertainly, her focus divided between protecting him and holding off the serpent.

"Stay back!" Noah shouted through gritted teeth, his voice shaking with pain. "Don't stop! Just... keep going!"

Kyren, who had been watching the scene from a distance, clenched his jaw tightly. His crimson eyes burned with renewed determination as he channeled every ounce of his mana into his blade.

"This ends now," he muttered, his voice cold and steady.

The serpent lunged at Mira, its massive jaws wide, but Kyren intercepted it with a powerful slash of his water-infused blade. The impact sent a shockwave through the cavern, forcing the beast back.

Using the brief opening, Kyren dashed forward, leaping onto the serpent's coiled body. His movements were swift and precise as he scaled the beast, using its shifting scales as footholds. With a final burst of mana, he drove his blade deep into the serpent's skull, the force of the strike sending cracks spidering through the cavern walls.

The serpent let out one last, earth-shaking roar before collapsing, its massive body falling limp. The cavern grew silent, save for the heavy breathing of the victorious group.

Mira and Kael rushed to Noah, their faces pale with worry. Mira knelt beside him, her amber eyes wide as she inspected his injured eye. "Let me see!" she demanded, her voice trembling with urgency.

"I'm fine," Noah muttered, though his voice was weak and strained. His right eye remained shut, the venom leaving a faint, blackened streak down his cheek.

"You're not fine," Mira shot back, her tone sharp with worry. "That looks serious."

Kyren approached, his crimson eyes scanning the group with a mixture of relief and exasperation. Without a word, he walked toward the wall the serpent had broken through, revealing a hidden cache of treasures. He sifted through the items, selecting a sword, a wand, and a dagger.

He handed the sword to Noah, the blade shimmering faintly as it adjusted to his size. "This will serve you better than your fists," Kyren said gruffly.

To Mira, he offered the wand, its slender frame engraved with fiery runes. "Use this to control your magic more efficiently."

Finally, he gave Kael the dagger, its blade glinting with an emerald sheen. "Your agility deserves a proper weapon."

The trio stared at their new weapons in awe, their earlier exhaustion momentarily forgotten. "Thank you," Noah said quietly, his voice filled with genuine gratitude.

Kyren's glare returned, his crimson eyes narrowing. "Don't thank me yet. What you did was reckless and stupid. If you pull something like this again, I won't be there to save you."

Later That Night

Back at the Lannett household, Mira's mother scolded the trio relentlessly, her hands on her hips and her face flushed with worry. "What were you thinking? A dungeon is no place for children!"

Mira and Noah sat side by side, their heads bowed as Mrs. Lannett dabbed at Noah's injured eye with a damp cloth. "This is going to sting," she warned, pressing a herbal salve onto the wound.

Noah flinched but didn't complain, his mind still replaying the events of the dungeon. "I'll be more careful next time," he muttered.

"There won't be a next time," Mrs. Lannett snapped, her tone leaving no room for argument.

That night, as Noah lay in bed, his right eye throbbed faintly. He stared at the ceiling, the day's events swirling in his mind. Unbeknownst to him, a faint glow began to pulse in the injured eye, signaling the beginning of a change no one could have predicted.
