CHAPTER 61: Sorry

Time: Unknown
Location: Waterfall
Sans had started breathing heavily in the night, and soon, those breaths turned into screams and he begged for mercy from thin air. These nightmares are getting more frequent. Was it just a coincidence?

"Sans!" I shook Sans awake in a fright. I quickly noticed his eye, flaming brightly with the purple hue I have familiarized myself with all this time I had been with him. Any other color and I wouldn't know what to think of the situation at hand. "Sans, it's just a dream!" I yelled, as it finally seemed that he had calmed down and gained consciousnesses back into reality.

His eyes darted around swiftly, and he was sweating profusely, which was odd because he only had bone and no sweat glands to produce the water from his body. Then again, whatever goes down here at this point I run with. "calm down." I said, in a less urgent manner, and more of a calming tone as I looked him in the eyes to try and keep him from frantically looking at our surroundings. "It's okay. It was only a dream." I said, once again, rather concerned.

He took a deep breath, and closed his eyes for a split second, chuckling to himself and grinning slightly. I was almost afraid that he had reverted back to his old self, but he just looked down at his lap and took more slow breaths to calm down what seemed like his heart-rate. "Are you okay?" I asked, leaning forward as if I were intrigued. I couldn't say I wasn't intrigued to see what actually scared Sans, he seemed fearless because of his lack of sanity for who knows how long. I just wonder how long he will stay sane at this rate. "You don't have to talk about it." I said, blurting, not wanting to give off the vibe I had set inside my head.

"Good." He said, muttering. "I wasn't planning on it." He said, getting up on his feet, pushing his hand off of his knee for support in getting up. He looked down at me, who had stayed on the ground, as if he had nothing to say to me. He looked as if he were holding himself back.

"Are you okay?" I asked, looking at him with a very concerned look on my face. "Like, are you sure?" I asked, looking at my hands and fiddling with them before looking back up at him to meet him in the eyes.

He shook his head after a moment of silence, as if he were trying to clear his head from any unwanted thoughts that he were thinking about. "I'm fine." He said, sighing. "Sorry about that. We should get going." He added, extending an arm to help me off of the ground. "Are you hungry? There are some empty homes up here we could probably ransack." He pointed in the supposed general direction.

"Yes, actually." I said, smiling. Though I was smiling, I knew he evaded the subject. he turned it back to me, and any other person would have been fooled, but I have done that one to many times myself to avoid answering questions. "Just up ahead?" I asked, and he nodded, leading the way.

He stuffed his hands inside his jacket pockets and lead me to a rather larger opening in the caves, and there were small sections that split off into different locations. In the corner, I saw a small dust pile, and it made me rather upset to look at, now knowing it was the remains of a dead monster. Sans eventually lead me to a strange-looking house, shaped like a fish and opened the door, as if it were his own. "I know there is some in here.." He mumbled to himself.

Looking through the cabinets as if it were his own home, he pulled out a cup of instant ramen, and filled it up with water, throwing it in the microwave for one minute. "I knew there'd be some in here." He said, turning around as the one minute seemed like it was taking its sweet time.

A solid minute of dead silence enveloped us and it was probably the most awkward minute of silence I had ever been in. Questions and thoughts swarmed through my head profusely and I held back asking the specific ones as to why he knew where everything was. After the microwave beeped, he grabbed the ramen, and handed it to me with a pair of chop-sticks that had been stuck inside of it. I finally asked, more so blurted, "Who's house is this?" I asked, rather uncomfortable.

He hesitated for a second, frowning and hitching his breath in the process. "It doesn't matter." He said, leading me out of the house rather swiftly. He said nothing as he tried to get as far away from it as possible, as if it were some sort of plague. Was he afraid of the house? Or the memories it brought? Or was it something entirely different? "Lets go." he said, "Eat on the way." He added.

He walked through the opening and continued going straight. I wanted to stop by the few houses that we had passed to view their odd shapes, but It didn't seem like Sans was going to stop for sight-seeing anytime soon. We had passed a maze of darkened rooms, that I had just stuck close to him with because the lighting no longer worked, according to Sans.

Walking out from a relatively long walk, the caverns were starting to widen, and I could almost feel the temperature start to rise. It wasn't uncomfortable, but it was definitely warmer than it had been a few minutes ago. "I'm sorry." I said, after a good, 15 to 20 minutes of silence. We had walked the whole way in absolute silence, and it was killing me.

He turned around, confused. "Why are you apologizing?" He said, turning back around rather swiftly to face away from me once he saw my saddened expression. "You didn't do anything." he said, grunting.

"I'm sorry I made you upset." I said, looking down, mumbling at this point. I was surprised he was even listening to me at this rate, I was being childish, but I felt as if an apologize was necessary due to the circumstances. "I didn't mean to." I said.

There was a moment of silence, as if he needed to think about his answer to tell me. I was sick of the silence already, but I let him think, because most likely he either was going too open up, or say something degrading. Well, from what i have observed from his behavior, at least. He sighed once more, as if the 100th time today. "You're annoying, you know that?" He said, walking up to me as if he were angry.

My head hung low, and my heart hurt when the words fell out of his mouth. I had already known what his thoughts were, but it hurt to have him admit them. "You're an idiot to think that you out of all people made me upset." He said, walking up to me, huffing as if I were a burden on his shoulders that he would just have to deal with. "Quit acting like that. Don't apologize for nothing." He said, making me smile widely in response to his statement.

"Thanks, Sans." I grinned, letting out a genuine smile to him. I could feel a twinge of happiness in my heart as he said that to me, and it had felt as if his words lingered and echoed in my head.

His eyes widened, only slightly, and he turned around to lead the way, not facing me anymore. "Anyways.." he trailed off, changing the subject. "We're almost to hotland.." He said, "So.. be prepared."
