Part Thirty Three
"What the hell is wrong with you young lady?!" An angry Phillip Schuyler yelled at his second eldest daughter.
"There is nothing wrong with me! Or him? Why-why do have to be so judgmental about every little thing I do?!" A riled up Eliza asked while making exaggerated hand motions.
"You barely know this, man, and I use that term lightly and young lady this is no little thing!"
"That is quite enough all of you." Her stern voice cut through their yelling easily causing everyone to shut up and turn to her.
Two hours earlier
"Is this really super important?" Alexander asked as he buttoned up the dress shirt he'd got especially for this occasion.
"Hey, I'm having your baby, the least you can do is meet my parents." Eliza countered quickly as she pulled her hair back.
"Okay, but, I've already met them." Alexander obviously did not want to go to this dinner, simply because this was the night she officially told her parents she was pregnant. Of course they heard rumors, however, neither of them had any sort of social media so they hadn't seen anything there.
"Not as the father of my child."
"Yes, but, what if they never do meet that part of me." He suggested. "Then your dad won't try to murder me or something."
"My dad isn't gonna murder you." Eliza said, sounding exasperated with him. "Alex, this is going to be hard for me to, at least they're not your parents. You're not feeling then your pregnant."
"I really can't, it's not how guy parts work Lizzy." He said, attempting to make a joke but Eliza just sighed. "I'm sorry, but, I'm still going no matter how much I ask not to. I'm here for you babe."
Eliza smiled ever so slightly. "Good, cause I'm not doing this without you." She said turning from her mirror to look at him.
"You'll never have to, I promise." He said, "I got you babe." He added in sing-song voice.
Eliza chuckled softly, shaking her head. "Weirdo."
One hour earlier
Just one of the Schuyler mansions stood tall in front of Eliza and Alexander. Eliza smiled at the somewhat familiar 'house', while Alexander gawked silently beside her. You see he wasn't so much impressed by the size alone, it was more the fact that this was be smallest of 11 houses that were owned by the Schuyler family and it wasn't too small.
"Are you Okay Alexander?" Eliza asked concernedly, she knew how nerve wracking this should be for him, her father wasn't known for being the nicest of people. Of course he'd always been sweet to his own children and family, but, when it comes to other people, her can come off as cold and harsh.
"Yes, Yes.... I'm just... okay.." Alexander said trying to reassure his girlfriend with a smile, it didn't work.
"Alexander, everything will be okay." She said sweetly, gently squeezing his hand in reassurance.
"It's just... what if he want us to get married or something?" He asked looking to Eliza with a little bit of fear in his eyes.
"Would that be so bad?"
"Well I'm just getting used to being in love with someone and... having a whole human child with that person- it's a lot, to say the least."
"I know, but, Alex I think you're forgetting he's just my dad." She said trying to hide her own fear deep within herself, because she knew how scared Alexander was and she wanted to be his rock. "But my dad is only a man, and we are in love, we'll be okay, we can do this."
Alexander smiled at her lovingly, she always knew just what to say to make him feel better. Granted he didn't feel too much better, but, something was better than nothing at all.
"Okay, lets do this then."
Once inside it was a fairly casual affair, for the Schuyler's, for Alexander this dinner seemed to be just as, if not more, extravagant than all those political events. There were chefs and servers busy at work while he sat with Eliza, her sisters and her parents in, what they called the parlor, having drinks. As polite as Phillip Schuyler was being, Alexander couldn't help but feel that the man hated him. He really couldn't blame him, but, the uncomfortable feeling he had in his stomach wasn't very nice.
"So Alexander, you're an aid for Washington?" Cathrine asked with a sweet smile on her lips.
"Yes miss, that's how I met your daughter, we've worked closely throughout the campaign." He said hoping he didn't sound as awkward as he thought he did.
"Seems he 'works' closely with quite a lot of people..." Phillip mumbled under his breath.
"Alexander, however, is Washington's most trusted advisor." Angelica added, trying to help as best she could.
"Do find that's a lot pressure?" Cathrine asked, almost looking concerned for Alexander.
"No miss, I and even if it is, I tend to work best under pressure."
"I would suppose you have to, especially because of where you come from." Phillip pointed out.
"Phillip, don't say that." Cathrine said with a gasp of shock at her husband.
"Cathrine, I am merely pointing out that because of the poor circumstances of his birth he's most likely more equipped to deal with high pressure situations." He explained calmly. "I believe it is a compliment, what do you say Alexander?"
"Oh, I would suppose it's a compliment sir." Alexander answered awkwardly.
"Of course it is." Phillip said exasperated.
"Well anyways, I'm glad you're doing so well." Cathrine said with a smile. "Maybe you'll be president one day."
Alexander smiled at the idea, he'd love to be able to serve the country he loved so much in what he believed to be highest way possible. But he was born poor, and he doubted that he'd be elected, no matter how much he loved the idea.
"Thank you miss, that's very kind of you."
"Oh nonsense Alexander, you are perfectly capable, I'm just being realistic." She said with a chuckle. "And really, call me Cathrine."
"Thank m- Cathrine." He said with a smile, this was going so well, sure, Phillip Schuyler was making comments about his past. But it wasn't so bad, in fact this might end up going well.
Eliza, however, was still on edge. She was still expecting her father to start yelling at her for doing something wrong, she was waiting for the moment he told her how much of a disappointment she was.
"Dinner is served."
Thank god, thought Eliza at least she would get to enjoy her dinner before was murdered by her own father. Dinner was quiet, awkwardly so, everyone (save for Maybe Alexander) could feel something looming over them.
Every once and a while Phillip would clear his throat as if he were about to speak, then say nothing. Eliza found it to be absolute torture. She never knew if something was coming, I mean he didn't know yet, but he had this look. The look he always had which said, I know everything, watch out.
Eliza knee she had to say something, she knew she had to say something soon. She was just so scared, what if her parents hated her because of this? What if they hated Alexander? What if they disowned her? There were so many terrible things that could happen.
Yet Eliza didn't get to choose when she told them, Angelica had decided it was time, "You Eliza has some very very important news."
"Oh, is that so?" Cathrine asked a curious look upon her face as she turned to look at Eliza.
"Oh well uh, yes I do." She said with a small nod. "It's- Uh- Well it's kind of complicated." She started.
"Nothing is really complicated Elizabeth." He father interjected.
"Well, sometimes things are father...."
Phillip looked at her unconvinced of this and she felt a lurch in her stomach. You can do this Eliza, he's only your father, he loves you, I think... just tell him. He's going to find out sooner or later at least if you tell him now you'll have some control. Deep breath, you got this. She had this, sort of, so with one deep breath she went for it.
"I'm pregnant."
"What?" Her mother questioned, quickly looking between her and Alexander and quickly started rambling out questions in Dutch.
"Hoe is dit gebeurd? wat ben je van plan hierover te doen? alsjeblieft, ik zou dit graag willen weten." (Translation: How did this happen? what do you intend to do about this? please, I would like to know this.) She rambled, mostly trying to grasp an understanding of the situation at hand.
Her father however was silent, he stared at Eliza for a long moment before looking at Alexander with a sharp glare. And that's when he spoke up,
"stil nu mijn liefde." Phillip said barely over a whisper which silenced Cathrine almost immediately. "You made my daughter pregnant?"
"I... Well, yes I did but-"
"But what? Do mean to say that you didn't mean to? That you regret it?"
"No, I don't mean to say that, it didn't happen intentionally, but, I don't regret it." Alexander said sure that this would win some respect from Phillip Schuyler.
"So you're happy you 'accidentally' ruined my daughters future? Hmm?"
"He didn't ruin anything father." Eliza cut in.
"Oh really? So you don't think the world won't judge you for having a baby with Alexander Hamilton?" He asked. "You realize he won't settle down, he's not capable as soon as he gets board he'll be back to sleeping with anything that moves, drinking booze and hanging out with those exhausting friends of his."
"Father, you don't even really know him."
"I know enough." He practically growled. "He won't marry you, he won't provide for you!"
"I won't marry him either, that's not what we want right now." She said standing up. "And why does he need to provide for me? Why the hell cant I handle my own needs?! Why do you have so little faith in me?"
"Because clearly you have terrible judgment!" Phillip exclaimed standing up himself.
"I could do this on my own- I'm going to, because I love Alexander so much and I know that we can do this together and that this will bring us closer together." She said firmly.
"Then why not marry him if you going to have his spawn?!"
Eliza groaned in frustration. "Because we don't want to!"
"That is quite enough all of you." Her stern voice cut through their yelling easily causing everyone to shut up and turn to her- Cathrine Schuyler- She was Now standing looking much more calm than earlier.
"No Catherine she cannot-"
"I said, that is quite enough." She said once again, her voice not wavering. "Phillip Schuyler, you of all people should know the strength of your daughters. Elizabeth is more than capable of handling whatever is put in front her, including motherhood."
Phillip sighed. "You... you are right.." he admitted in more quiet voice than he's used all night.
"And Alexander is a good man, you know that." She continued. "You've actually used to admire him, don't confuse your emotions so easily Phillip."
"Thank you mother.." Eliza started, relief clear in her voice.
"And you young lady."
"What about me?"
"You know father believes in you, and it's ridiculous that you think anything else." She sternly. "You're his little girl, he doesn't want you growing up... it's makes him feel old, and though he will never admit it, it makes him feel less useful knowing you can make it on your own."
Eliza frowned slightly. "Oh papa..." she said softly, the use of the name she called him in childhood made the old man smile slightly. "You'll never be unuseful... you'll be a grandpa, this baby's gonna need all the love he can get from you."
"I still don't like you aren't married." He stated.
"I know..."
"That won't change your mind?"
"I think you already know the answer..."
And with that, the Schuyler family found peace once more. There was still a little tension between Alexander and Angelica, while Phillip was still getting through the fact this man got his daughter pregnant. But it was still peaceful and they knew that they could, for now, be around each other without anymore fighting.
