[LS] shade lord mama bear
Hollow Knight ending spoilers (specifically for Embrace the Void/Dream No More)
The Knight swayed, staring up at Ares. It was breathing heavily, struggling to even lift its nail, but it wasn't about to give up. They'd killed gods before- stronger, smarter gods.
...But this time, their blood was running down their arms and legs, forming little puddles of Void at their feet. It knew instinctively that if it died here, it wouldn't be coming back. This would be a really good time for their spells to return...!
The god of war grinned and raised his weapon. "I warned you, kid," he said smugly. "Don't brag if you can't follow through."
Before he could attack, though, the air in front of the Knight shimmered. A massive head, complete with eight eyes and a twisted crown of horns, rose from the ground. "Oh, but we can," the Lord of Shades whispered in a thousand different voices.
The Knight had never been so relieved to see their other half. It stepped away, healing a few of its most painful wounds. Their siblings could handle this.
Ares narrowed his eyes, confused. Not scared; he didn't know enough to be scared yet. "Then-"
He didn't get a chance to finish his sentence. The Shade Lord opened their mouth, heat and light pouring from their jaws. Ares stumbled back, trying to stab them and finding that their skin simply absorbed the sword. "What is that?!" he shouted.
The Knight giggled, watching as golden ichor pooled on the ground and mixed with the Void. "Stubborn, stubborn little flame," the shades mumbled. "You stand no chance. Look; bask in the glory of the one who came before you."
Ares shuddered- with anger, fear, or pain, the Knight couldn't tell. "Get out of my head," he rasped, his eyes going dark for a few seconds.
The shades recoiled as one. "Too much? Not again, not again," they chorused. "She will be forgotten. Our apologies." Their jaws slammed shut, and the Lord of Shades vanished.
The Knight dropped to its knees. Ares did, too; he was covered in burns, shaking violently and batting at his head like he'd gone mad. After a few seconds, he seemed to realize that the threat was gone. He stood up unsteadily, looking up at the sun with a wary, pained expression.
Then he disappeared, leaving the little vessel alone in the arena.
And all was as it should have been, or so it told itself. The sun did not glare with hatred here. He was warm and kind, nothing like the one they had left behind. The old light had been devoured. Nothing could bring her back from that.
Still... it wouldn't hurt to be more careful. The Knight had to fight their own battles now. It stood up. Where was their bed, again...?
