Chapter 14
"We're not the only students trapped here," Michi had told us.
Hearing those words, I felt my heart race even faster. No one came into the library during lunch break. That was when everyone ate and could decompress from their morning classes. The only reason I was here was because I wanted to avoid Kaito.
Or more so, I didn't want him to ask about the dorayaki treat he gave me earlier. While we were trapped here, that treat was stuffed somewhere in my backpack, ready to go home to my little brother.
While I was here for that reason, I wasn't surprised to see Michi. She worked really hard in every single class, but I guess that's to be expected from someone ranked number two. As to why Kaito was here, I wasn't sure. It should have just been the three of us stuck in the library.
Except, I started to remember the other person I had ran into when I was looking for a book.
I stood up and peaked above the railing to see the boy stuck to a chair. His arms were turned to mush behind his back. His legs were in a similar position as they pretty much merged into the legs of the chair. My eyes widened in horror as Yamamoto tried to use his strength to get out of the chair, but he couldn't budge.
"You're going to get caught," Yamamoto sneered as he looked at the pink-haired woman, who was kneeling in front of him. "Do you really think that in a school full of heroes, you can get away with all of this?"
The woman in front of him smiled as she grabbed his chin. I felt my heart stop, remembering what her Quirk involved. He didn't know. Sure, I told him, Kaito, and Sakura a little bit about the villains at the mall, but they didn't know about that particular Quirk. It was one of the few pieces of information I had left out. Or at least, I think I left out. It had been so long ago that I had forgotten what I told them that day.
Besides, even if he did know or figured it out, he didn't see those villains at the mall. Only I did. There was no way he'd know what she'd look like, or her sidekick.
The woman chuckled. "Aren't you pwesious for thinking that way. Big heroes can't help you now, so pucker up."
While Yamamoto tried leaning back in his chair as much as he could, he couldn't get away. He was trapped. There was no way out of this.
It was just like that man from the mall. I never knew what happened to him. He could've been dead for all I knew.
Dead.
The thought made it harder to breathe. If Yamamoto died right there, it would be my fault for not trying to warn him. I was watching this whole thing happen before my very eyes. Only I knew what her Quirk did, or at least, somewhat did. Yamamoto didn't.
There was no way I could let him deal with the consequences, even if he wasn't the nicest of people in my class.
"Get away from him!" I screamed.
The woman froze before she snapped her head up at me. Her mouth curved into a twisted smile.
"Oh, wooskie what we've got here! More hero-wanna-bes! Let's find them, Meaty!" she squealed as she stood up.
I watched as she walked past Yamamoto's chair, tossing his hair a bit as she did. He didn't seem to care as he tried looking back at me. The way he was positioned, there was no way he could see it was me. Maybe that was a good thing.
Unfortunately, I had bigger issues as that woman was walking towards the spiral staircase. As for her partner in crime, he was nowhere to be found.
Someone grabbed my wrist, yanking me away. I tore my gaze away from what was going on at the lower level of the library and looked to see Michi pulling me behind her while Kaito was by her side. They both looked at me in disappointment.
"What were you thinking?" Michi hissed as we started to run towards the back of the library.
"She was going to k-kiss him," I told her. "And—and he could've died!"
Michi froze. "You didn't think about telling us that sooner?" she asked as she let go of my wrist.
Kaito shook his head in disagreement. "Technically, Tami did say that she didn't know if they would go unconscious or if they would die. Best to play it safe than not."
I smiled at Kaito, relieved that he was able to gather that much from what I had said earlier, despite seeming a bit distracted from it. Honestly, Michi was right in wondering what I was thinking. It was a horrible move to let these villains know there were more of us here. At the same time, I wasn't sure if I could sleep knowing I let a classmate die.
If her Quirk killed, I wasn't sure. Honestly, I didn't want to find out.
"Awe, who would've known there was a whole buncha wittle hero-wanna-bes?" I heard the woman cooed.
We turned around finding the two villains on the other side of the aisle we were standing in. I turned my head around, realizing for the first time that Michi and Kaito had successfully dragged me to the back part of the library. That meant there were windows behind us and bookshelves of books on either side of us.
There was no escape.
My head snapped over towards the man, noticing that his arms were shortening a bit he started to point them at us. I could feel the sweat pouring down my forehead as Kaito took a step in front of Michi and me, readying his fists.
"Make sure you weave some fun for me. I'm gonna wook for that book. No worries. I'll be back, so these kiddos can get a good nappy-poo," the woman said as she blew a kiss in our direction before turning around.
"A book?" I heard Michi whisper in surprise.
It was shocking. I looked down, noticing I was still clinging onto the book Yamamoto found in my left hand. Part of me was relieved I didn't lose it, but at the same time, the chance that this book was the one they wanted was slim to nothing. If it was, I'd make sure they wouldn't get it.
But why a book? Every single book in the U.A. library was one that could've been found anywhere else. There was not a single book here that couldn't have been found at a public library or somewhere else.
So, why come to U.A. to steal a simple book?
I clutched the book closer to my chest, holding it with both hands. As long as I had it, I could do my project. Not for my sake, but for Kaito's. While I could afford a bad grade, he couldn't. There was no way I was going to jeopardize his chances at being a hero just, so I could slip out.
The man in front of us didn't seem to care about what I had in my hands. Instead, he just pointed his arm at us and released a gooey substance that flung towards us. Kaito opened the palm of his hand the moment the goo was released, releasing his own Quirk. Light poured out of Kaito's hand, nearly blinding us.
While I couldn't see, I knew one thing: none of us got hit with goo.
Michi wrapped her arm around my shoulders before the three of us raced out, sprinting beside the man without him even noticing. When my vision started to clear up, I looked back, realizing the Meatball-like Quirk guy was grabbing the front of his face.
"And Sakura thinks my Quirk is useless," I heard Kaito comment from in front of me. "Light is bright, and you can lose your sight. Hey! That rhymed!"
"Now's not the time, Kaito. We've got to get out of here," Michi urged as she let go of my shoulders and started to run.
I quickly picked up the pace, but still fell short behind them. It wasn't that I was naturally short, but Michi had longer legs. Seeing her running in front of me, I realized she had a few inches on Kaito, who was about the same height as me. Since she had the longer stride, this was much easier for her.
As for Kaito, well, I knew he trained hard. He had to in order to stay ahead of Yamamoto.
While they were fast, I ran a few paces behind them, trying my best to keep up. There was only so much I could do as I followed them to where the staircase was at.
All we needed to do was get past the staircase, get Yamamoto, and hurry to the safe room. While that was a lot that needed to be done, at least we were starting our escape. That was all we needed to do. It wasn't like we were expected to fight these guys; we just needed to outrun them.
Unfortunately that spark of optimism vanished before we could reach the staircase, finding the woman standing there in front of us.
"Oh! Wooks wike someone isn't doin a vewy good job at distractin these kiddos. Wooks wike I getta have some fun," the woman announced before she started to giggle uncontrollably.
Kaito threw his hand out, forcing out another ray of light. Only, this time, it wasn't as bright as the last one. Whether that was Kaito's intent or not, it didn't matter. Unlike the man from before, this woman had an easier time dodging it. She took a step to the side, forcing the attack to shoot past her and into the nearest bookshelf.
My eyes widened as I pulled the book closer to my chest. How she managed to dodge it was beyond me, but I didn't want to know. Instead, I cowardly took a couple steps back, worried about what she'd do.
The pink haired woman turned to look at me, smiling as she did. "Awe, don't be scared. It's not wike—wait a minute. You're that wittle baby who got away from us at the mall! Guess it's time to finawy get your nappy time in."
I looked over at Kaito, whose hands tightened into fists. For a moment, he reminded me of Yamamoto, especially since he carelessly threw another beam of lights towards the woman. He didn't learn from before as she could easily dodge them.
She took a step to the side, causing the beam of light to hit the very same bookshelf it did before. Only this time, it caused a dent, forcing the bookshelf to collapse. Books fell from it while the shelf leaned back into another bookshelf, causing the whole line of bookshelves behind it to topple over.
"Now wookie what you did there," the woman complained as she looked behind her to see the damage that was done.
While she was distracted, Kaito was about to throw another beam of light in her direction. Michi was faster. She grabbed his wrist and shook her head, before looking back at me.
"Tami, listen to me," Michi whispered. "Do you think if we would run, you could transform into me?"
"Ye-yes," I whispered.
"Good, follow my lead," she whispered, before looking at Kaito, "on my signal, throw another beam, but at the ceiling, okay?"
Kaito didn't have time to answer as the woman turned her head towards us and started to rub her hands together. "Who wants ta go nappy poo first?"
She didn't wait for an answer as she started walking towards us. Even though she asked us who wanted to suffer first, her eyes were locked onto mine. I glanced over at Michi, wondering when her plan was going to take place. Was she ever going to give Kaito the signal? I honestly wasn't sure as this villain kept walking towards us.
We were only a month into school, and we were going to die. Was U.A. really the place for future heroes, or was it just the place where villains could find easy prey? I bit my bottom lip as I glanced over at Kaito. His eyes glared towards the woman, waiting for the signal.
When was she going to give the signal? If this woman got too close to him, and he used his Quirk, could she still kiss him? Then what? This wasn't going to work out. I looked over at the woman seeing her only a foot away from us.
Her eyes were still locked onto me.
"How about the shapeshifter?" she questioned.
No!
"Now!" Michi screamed.
A flash of light exploded in front of me, causing my vision to go out. I tried blinking my eyes to see, but there was nothing. While I could see nothing, I could still hear. The woman shrieked on the top of her lungs as I heard footsteps scattering around.
For a moment, I thought I was just standing there until my vision started to clear up a bit. I looked up, seeing that Michi wasn't even running in front of me. For a moment, I thought that she had abandoned me, but instead, I felt her hand tapping my shoulder for a moment, taking me off guard.
Even more so, as I looked around, we weren't on the second floor of the library. We were in the middle of the library where Yamamoto was tied up. Round tables with chairs surrounded me, and further back were some bookshelves.
"H-h-how..." I started to say.
"I didn't think that'd work," Michi gasped.
I turned my head to look at Michi, who was still standing beside me. No, correction, she was hanging off my shoulders as sweat beaded down her face. Her heart must've been racing faster than my own seeing how hard she was breathing.
"Y-you teleported," I realized.
"Really? I didn't notice. Now can someone get me out of this damn chair‽" I heard Yamamoto scream.
Michi collapsed off my shoulders and into a chair. Her body slumped over her legs as sweat just oozed out of her body. I bit my lip. If it wasn't for her and Kaito, I would've been in a very difficult spot. Unlike the mall, there would have been no way out.
How was it my Quirk was hero material? There was no way! I couldn't help when we were cornered. I couldn't think quickly like Michi could. She even tried going past her own limits because I couldn't do anything with my Quirk.
Somehow, I needed to get out of this school before someone found out I wasn't meant to be a hero.
I looked back at Yamamoto who just rolled his eyes at me. He wasn't in as bad shape as he was earlier. The goo only wrapped around his hands, that were pulled behind the back of the chair, and some of it wrapped around his feet, but that was only to keep them from moving. Yamamoto was no longer trying to use his Quirk either, which was odd coming from him.
Not knowing what else I could really do, I walked over towards him and knelt down, yanking the goo off his feet. It was sticky to the touch, but thicker than I had expected, like clay that had been in the sun for too long. My hands tugged on it for a while before I could finally yank it off of him.
"Your Quirk," Yamamoto advised, "does it give you the normal abilities of someone else's?"
"Yeah," I told him.
"Change into me," he said.
My eyes widened as I looked up at him. It was an innocent mistake, I hope, that he thought it was that simple. Thing was, after our first day of exams, we were given better uniforms that would adapt to our Quirks. It was easy for me to transform into someone else then.
But, I didn't have that on when I was in my simple uniform.
"I-I-I don't think that's a very g-g-good idea," I stuttered as I could feel my face heating up.
"If you're worried what everyone will see how I look like in a skirt—" Yamamoto started.
"No," I argued, as I started tugging on the other gooey substance that wrapped around his other leg. "Y-y-you're bigger. My clothes, I, they, I—they'll break, er, rip..."
Yamamoto didn't answer. Instead, he looked away back at the staircase. I kept tugging on the hard goo until I finally pried it off his leg. Once off, I piled it together with the other stuff, noticing something weird. It was the same color as the man who used it. While I thought it was a part of him, I was now convinced that was what it was.
If he would come down here, then we'd be in big trouble. That was if he could control those things, or did they kind of die off as soon as they hit its target?
No, I didn't have time to think about that. Yamamoto needed my help. I stood up and rushed behind him, starting to peel the goo off of his hands. Luckily, it was just around his wrists, almost like a makeshift handcuff. Since it wasn't as thick, it was much easier to pry off.
Unfortunately, I didn't think about that as I tried yanking it just as hard as before. Because I used too much strength, I ended up tumbling back, landing on my butt. I winced as I carelessly almost wiped my hand across my forehead before I saw the goo sticking on there. Seeing it, I quickly wiped it on the floor, getting the substance off of me.
"You okay?" Yamamoto asked.
I snapped my head up, only to see Yamamoto trying to pull Michi out of the chair. She looked up, barely keeping her eyes awake. Teleporting the two of us must have been too much for her.
But it wasn't enough for her eyes to widen in fear.
"Tami, behind you!" she warned.
I turned my head just in time to see Kaito trying to struggle out of the pink-haired villain's grasp while the other villain looked at me with his arm outstretched towards me. Because I was so distracted by the two, I froze.
I froze just in time for the goo that I had peeled off to come flying towards me before more shot out of the man's arm. The goo wrapped around me, contorting my body until I was the definition of a meatball with a head on top.
My biggest fear about that goo was right. It had all belonged to that man. Because it belonged to him, he could easily move it around, reusing it if necessary. I tried struggling, but nothing happened.
All I could do was watch. It didn't help as the pink haired woman twisted Kaito's arms behind his back. With him unable to get away, Michi too tired to teleport, and me stuck as a human meatball, there was nothing we could do. I wished I could say that Yamamoto could get us out safely, but he was the first person to be trapped by these two. If he couldn't escape the first time, there was no way he could escape a second time.
This was all my fault. We were going to die. We were all going to die!
However, luck changed when the woman opened her mouth. She was about ready to say something when the doors to the library slammed open, revealing a whole group of heroes standing there, including Mr. Elastic and Ape X.
"Stop where you're at," Mr. Elastic announced. "I think it's time we wrap things up."
Just like that, Mr. Elastic and the other heroes came bursting through the door. It was enough to catch the attention of the pink haired villain as she let go of Kaito. The boy didn't even think twice as he used his Quirk to shoot a beam of light right into her face. As she stumbled back, blinded by the light, I watched as he ran straight over to me and started prying off as much human goo as he could.
I looked away from him, watching as the teachers used their Quirks to fight off the villains. I watched as the guy with the goo Quirk started to retract some of the goo he had on me to use it against the heroes. It might have made Kaito's job easier, but the heroes struggled a bit as the villain used his Quirk to turn them into meatballs.
There was nothing I could do as I still stuck as a human meatball. Kaito tried his hardest, but it wasn't enough. His friend, Yamamoto, must've realized it too as he started prying off the goo as well.
Once again, I felt useless.
"You kids get going!" Mr. Elastic warned, as his arm stretched out towards the pink haired villain in attempts to reach her. "We've got it handled from here."
Right as he said that, I felt the last piece of goo being ripped from my arm. I winced before looking down, seeing my blazer looking pretty worn down from all the gooey substance that was once there while my legs looked red. It was almost as if someone had put duct tape on them and tore them off. Honestly, that was kind of how it felt too.
"Kaito, you be on offense, I'll take care of the girls," Yamamoto ordered as he took one arm and wrapped it under my shoulders, lifting me up. He didn't need to even use his Quirk as he walked me over to where Michi was, wrapping his spare arm under her so she was leaning against him.
I looked over at Kaito, seeing the guy giving me a bright smile. "No worries. We'll get out of here in no time."
And just like that, Yamamoto dragged Michi and I with him while Kaito stayed a few feet behind, careful to make sure the villains didn't follow us.
Author's Note:
Wow...that was a lot. I almost split that into two chapters, extending it a bit more, but that would've ultimately ended in a huge cliffhanger (and that'd be too mean to do). But, by the looks of it, Tami, Kaito, Michi, and Yamamoto made it out of there alive, even if it was barely doing so.
Since they finally made it out of the library, I want to know, what is your favorite genre of books to read?
Also, I just wanted to thank you all for reading again. Earlier this week, I'm No Hero reached over 5,000 reads! That truly made my day seeing that as I love seeing all of your continuous love, support, comments, and all that good stuff. So thank y'all for all of that!
I hope y'all have a wonderful day! Bye.
