Chapter One : Lily
"Lily!" My mom hollered at me from behind my bedroom door. "It's time to get up for school! Don't want to miss your first day of high-school!"
Ah, yes. Today is the beginning of the worst four years of my life. High-school at Dagwood is just like hell on earth. Or, so I've heard. My older sister, Charity, is a junior and has told me a lot of things that go on in high school. She also said its nothing like it's portrayed on television.
I still hadn't opened eyes when my phone buzzed. My best friend, Halle, had texted me telling me what she was wearing. Awaiting my return to the school building. I ascend to my closet filled with brand new clothes just waiting to be worn. At first I grabbed a t-shirt but that's when my mom walked in.
"Darling, please don't wear just a t-shirt and jeans. We got you all of these nice clothes for you to wear not just hang up in your closet. Please just wear something nicer."
I hate it when she does that. Just before she closes my door, I scream out "It's just school you know! It's not like my knight in shinning armor is just going to leave me there cause I'm in a t-shirt!"
Of course she just walks off, pretending not to hear what I said. I hate it whens she does that. I put my t-shirt back and grabbed this summery looking dress. It was cute, I guess. It was white with sunflowers printed all over it. I slipped it on and grabbed my favorite cardigan. It was white, just white. Which was why my mom hated it. She always said it was plain Jane.
I snatched my book bag of the ground and ran down the stairs, but at that point i realized i didn't have on any shoes. i dropped my bag, went back up stairs, and picked out my yellow ballet flats. By then It was almost 8am. Charity was already down stairs eating cereal.
She yelled out and she put her bowl in the sink, "I'm leaving!" She grabbed her keys and asked if I wanted to ride with her instead of mom. I said yes. and grabbed my stuff, took my phone off the island in the kitchen, and started out the door. She followed me, a smile on her face.
"What?" I said. "Something in my hair?"
"No. Just never thought you'd be this excited about school. It's only 7:15." She said through her devilish smile.
"My alarm clock said it was almost 8!" By this time I had stopped and was almost yelling at her, my voice raised, and her looking like I was telling her the funniest joke ever.
"Well, I set it forward to mess with you. Funny right?"
I almost tore her head of, but instead I took to the car waiting for her to come and just drive me already. So my first day of school is starting off terribly. i just wanted it over with already. I pulled out my schedule to distract myself from my anger.
We pulled into the parking lot ten minutes later. I wasn't sure what i should do. i just kind of walked away and yelled bye at Charity. I went straight to homeroom which of course was almost empty. Only me, the nerd of the class, and my teacher. Okay, so Blake Matthews was kind of cute, but he was still a geek. Like, pant pulled up over the belly butten, geek. Of course he was sitting in the front row and in the desk closest to the teacher. I chose to sit farthest away. I didn't want to be here this early. I just wish I could go back home and sleep for another half hour.
About ten minutes later people started filing in. First the geeks, the popular people, then the rest. As soon as every one was there and had a seat she pulled out te worst thing I could have ever imagined. A seating chart. She started in the front row, left side.
"Bill Johnson, Kenan James, John Wellingsworth, Andrew Anderson, And Josh Arons." She continued on until she got to the third row from the front. The first name she called made me want to die.
"Lily Miller." I hated being in the middle of the class room, but what really struck me was the name she called next, "Blake Matthews." He grabbed his stuff and shuffled across the room. Once everyone was done giggling Miss Neighbors started again.
"Hey, uhm. My names Blake." He whispered at me. I knew his name but had never actually met him. He had brace and glasses, shaggy brown hair, and green eyes. He had on a math shirt that was supposed to be funny. It said:
Dear Maths,
Please stop telling people to find your x. She's not coming back.
Signed,
Me.
I have to admit it was kind of funny. I realized he was still waiting on me to say something. "Lily. Lily Miller."
He just smiled at me and nodded his head. That's when Miss Neighbors started. She wort her name on the board and said, "My name is Miss Neighbors. This is your homeroom. You will report here every morning. We take attendance and all of that jazz." She picked of a stack or papers and Started to hand them out. "This is your Emergency Medical Form. Just to make sure everything is up to date."
I hated getting all of these papers on the first day. Blake looked over at me and said something, but i couldn't make it out so I just smiled an nodded.
"This," Miss Neighbors said as she picked up another stack of papers. "is a letter to the parents. Have them sign it and return it so we know they read it."
After she was done, the bell rang and the while class jumped to their feet and started toward the door. I pulled out my schedule. I didn't remember my locker number. Blake was following me. Once I got to my locker I realized why. His locker was right next to mine.
"Looks like we are locker buddies." He said with a smile on his face.
I couldn't help myself, he looked twelve. I smiled and said "Yep." I shoved my algebra and science books in my bag and walked off. Next thing I knew I was right at my 1st period. I walked in to a seating chart. Crap. I thought. I looked at and saw I'm in the front row. Oh joy. I walked over to where I was supposed to sit. Then Halle walked in. I was so happy to see her. She looked at the chart and we were sitting right next to each other. I was so happy.
"I missed you! Why haven't I seen you yet! I told you to meet me in the court yard before school!" She practically yelled at me.
"No you didn't." I said.
"I texted you. Look." Sure enough she pulled out her phone and there it was in pink and black. I grabbed my phone out of my bag and looked. There it was.
"Sorry! I had a bad morning and just kind of forgot about my phone."
Just then the teacher stomped in. Mr. Beavers. "Hello class." he said with a lisp and spit all over Halle and I. Joy. After that period, we got up and i started toward Algebra.
"Hey where you going?" Halle asked me.
"I have algebra. What do you have?" I replied.
"I have Gym."
After we said our goodbyes, we took our separate ways. When I got there, I was pleased to see no seating chart. I went in and sat down. In the next 5 minutes the room filled up and guess who walked in with he teacher? Blake. He comes in smiling. What do you have to smile about? I thought.
Just as I was trying sneakily text Halle back, he drops his stuff right beside me.
"What do you think you're doing?" I snapped at him.
"Well, we are already seat buddies in Homeroom and we're locker buddies." He said still smiling.
"Does that mean we have to sit together all the time?"
"No, but no one else in here likes me."
I really felt bad now. he was a fourteen year old boy, had braces, and glasses. I looked at him and said, "Well, you can sit here but that dosen't mean we're friends."
He silently dropped his head.
"Well hello there everybody! Who all is having a good day so far?" Mrs. Collins said to the class.
No one said anything, except Blake. "My day is going great!" He yelped. I turned my head the opposite direction of him and just breathed deeply. This all be over soon. I thought.
"Well thank you Mr. Matthews. Anyone else?" I'm almost positive I heard a few crickets chirp.
After that class, I had lunch. I sat with Halle. Then i had Gym, and history. I walked home that day because I just needed to think. As I walked, Blake came into my mind. I just want to get him out! Why is he all of the sudden popping up in my mind?
I got home and my mom and dad were sitting out on the porch swing. Just like they always do. I walked by and told them i was going to go over to Halle's house later. They said as Long as I was back for dinner it was okay. I walked inside and Charity was on the couch. I was still mad at her. I passed without even the slightest glimpse over at her. I planned on ignoring her until I was done being mad at her.
Once I got upstairs, I shut my door and just laid on my bed. I just sat there and thought about today. I looked out my window right by my bed. It was getting dark out. I could see the reflection of my room. My spring green walls, white trim, and pink carpet. I seemed as if my room was big, but in reality I just didn't really have much stuff. In my room, I had; a small vanity, a white dresser, a closet, medium sized bed with yellow covers, a desk in the corner, and a small side table sitting by my bed, holding what I don't want anyone to find.
I got up and realized i still had on my dress. I walked over and pulled it over my head, dropping it to the floor. I opened my closet door and pulled a large t-shirt i got from Outer Banks, and a pair of pajama pants my grandma got me. They were pink with little bunnies on them. I slid them on and grabbed socks and my Adidas sandals. I put them on as i walked down stairs. I told my mom i would be back soon. She told me not too long because it was getting dark. I picked up a flashlight and my phone as I left.
It took me about ten minutes to get to Halle's. I knocked at the door. Her mom, Mrs. Dyer, answered.
"Lily! Welcome! Come on in! You must be freezing!" She always treated me like i was her daughter. I loved it. Just then Halle came down the stairs.
"Lily? What are you doing here? Did i invite you over? I don't remember. Oh well, come on!" She motioned for me to follow her up the stairs. I took to the stairs two at a time to catch up with her. Their house was so beautiful. The door was white and had gold trim around the window. When you walk in the floor is marble and the stair case is blindingly white. I curves like the ones you see in mansions.
Once we were in her room, I flung myself onto her huge bed. Unlike my room, Halle's room actually was big.
"So?" Halle looked at me questioningly.
"What?" I replied.
"Why are you here?"
"Sorry. I didn't know you didn't want me here. I can leave."
"You know that's not what I meant."
I told her the whole story about Blake, then she ranted at me. I went home after that.
