Maybe Jumping Out of A Window Isn't A Good Idea
"Good morning, sweetheart!" Sally said cheerfully.
"Good morning, Mom," Percy said, less enthusiastic. She could've been a bit more enthusiastic: it was Saturday! But no, she forgot to turn off her gods dam alarm clock which decided to wake her at 6.30. On a Saturday!
"You're up early," Sally said, as she flipped a few blue pancakes which lay on the pan.
"I forgot to turn off my alarm clock," Percy groaned.
Sally pursed her lips. She had too to keep her from laughing, and that wouldn't be so motherly. "Sweetie, that's awful."
But she couldn't hold it in, laughter escaped her mouth. She quickly placed her hand over her mouth, but it didn't stop the laughter.
"Woah," Paul said as he stepped into the kitchen. "Am I dreaming or is Percy actually up this early? It's only 8!"
Percy rolled her eyes and turned to face her step-father. "I forgot to turn off my alarm clock."
Paul had a similar reaction, only he didn't even try to hold it back. Percy poured and headed towards the table, where she sat down. She started fiddling with Riptide as she waited. She picked up her phone and sent a quick message to Annabeth.
I miss you
It was true. She missed her so much. It felt weird knowing that Annabeth was a short car ride away. At least she had Barbara. So to keep herself from being all too lonely she sent a message to Barbra, not bothering to think about if she was awake yet.
She sent the message asking Barbara if she wanted to do anything today. While she was waiting for her reply she sat down at the dinner table and had breakfast with her mother and Paul. During moments like these, it felt like her life was normal. Like her father wasn't a Greek god, like she was a normal mortal.
After breakfast Barbara had replied, so Percy took her bicycle to Barbara's house.
She knocked on the wooden door of the Gordon home. Barbara's father opened the door. Percy had met him several times. He was a kind guy.
"Hello, Percy," he said, and smiled. "Barbara's in her room."
Percy stepped inside and Barbara came flying down the stairs. Well, not flying. But it look like it. She rushed down the first steps and fell down the rest of the stairs.
"Ow," Barbara groaned and laughed from where she lay on the floor.
Percy ran up to her and sat down beside her. "Oh my gods, Barbara. Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm perfectly fine," Barbara smiled. "Did you see that?"
Barbara's father just sighed and shook his head and from his reaction Percy assumed this was a common occurrence.
"That's the third I've fallen down the stairs this month," Barbara laughed.
"This month? It's only the fifth!" Percy exclaimed.
"Exactly," Barbara said and got up. She easily stood up and Percy noticed the several bruises on her arms and legs. Probably from falling down the stairs three times in five days.
Barbara ran up the stairs again and Percy followed. They walked into Barbara's room and Barbara fell down on her bed.
"I wasn't expecting to hear from you this early in the morning," Barbara said, sitting up. Percy sat down beside her.
"I wasn't expecting to message you this early in the morning," Percy said. "I forgot to turn off my school alarm."
Barbara laughed for what felt like the hundredth time in the five minutes she'd been here.
"Hey, don't laugh at my misfortune!" Percy cried.
"I'm sorry— I just," Barbara tried to make a sentence, but she just continued laughing. And Percy joined her. Barbara's laughter was like the laughter of an angel. It was contagious, and heavenly.
So it only took a few minutes before they were both rolling on the floor laughing, only stopping to add jokes causing them to laugh even harder. The jokes weren't even funny, but they still laughed. They laughed and laughed.
It was a natural laugh, they hadn't been bombed by the Joker, Percy was sure of that. It was such a pleasure to just be able to laugh. It was hard to move to Gotham, but she was so glad she'd found someone to laugh with.
They laughed and laughed, but eventually they calmed down. But you couldn't really say they were calm.
"Barbara, I have the best idea ever," Percy said, her mind not functioning properly. It never did, and that's how she got her plethora of bad ideas.
"What is it?" Barbara asked, her mind not really working either.
If anyone saw them, they would guess they were drunk. But that wasn't the case, they were just really stupid and had the worst ideas ever.
"We should jump out of the window," Percy proposed.
"Why?" Barbara asked, holding on to her last bit of common sense.
"Why not?" Percy asked. "It can't be that long of a fall, right?"
And so Barbara's days worth of common sense slipped away. "Yeah, why not?"
"I'll go first," Percy said.
"No, lets jump together," Barbara offered.
"Yes! Why didn't I think of that?" Percy asked.
Barbara opened the large windows in her room and looked down on the ground. Her room was on the second floor, not too long of a fall. Or that's how it looked at the moment. The ground under them was grass, and grass was soft, right?
Barbara gave her hand to Percy who held it in her hand.
"You ready?" Barbara asked.
"You bet," Percy said and they jumped. The fall was short, but the ground was not soft.
"Ow, I think I've broken something."
I know this isn't the best chapter, and to be honest it was completely random, but I promise we'll get into the plot soon! I hope you enjoyed the chapter!
