Chapter 7
"Lottie. We gotta go." I heard Scarlett's voice coming from downstairs. I sighed. Scarlett hadn't let me reason with her, she had decided that I needed therapy and today was the first appointment. I had begged and tried everything I knew to tell her that I didn't need to go, but nothing had changed her mind. Today was my first therapy appointment and I really didn't want to go. How should I tell a complete stranger everything that had happened in my past, if I couldn't couldn't talk about it to someone I knew and trusted like Scarlett. "Lottie. Come on." The blonde was standing in the door to my room. "Do I really have to go?" I asked to turn around to face her. "Yes you have to. So come on now." I sighed and followed her down the stairs, got into the car. "It won't be as bad. The therapist sounds really nice and when it really doesn't work, you don't have to again, but at least give it a chance." I nodded again, even though I didn't think I would be able to talk to her. "Lottie I mean it." I sighed but nodded again."Okay I promise." I promised and smiled at her, she smiled back at me. "Do you want to listen to music for the rest of the drive?" I nodded and turned on the radio, changing the stations a few times before I found one of my favorite songs. Hey Stephen by Taylor Swift. Immediately I started to hum along. "You like to sing, don't you?" I nodded and my small smile widened till I was beaming. "Yeah, especially Taylor Swift. She is my favorite singer." Scarlett smiled. "I am sure we could visit one of her concerts one time." I beamed at her. "Yeah I'd like that." She gave me a smile. "Have you ever thought of making music?" I shook my head. "No I haven't. Why?" "Because your good at singing and it seems like you like it." I just shrugged. "We're there." Scarlett said and I sighed, but followed her out of the car into the building. On the seventh floor we found the doctor's office.
We waited at the front where Scarlett registered with me. "Charlotte Johansson." I shrugged a little, then up until now I had always been Charlotte Young. "Uhm I'm here." I lifted my hand and gave the woman a little smile. She had dark brown hair cut into shoulder length and was wearing horn-rimmed glass. She seemed nice, her face showed a lot of laugh wrinkles. "Follow me please." I nodded, but looked at Scarlett. "I'll wait right here." She promised and squeezed my hand. "Kay." I followed the therapist into her room. It was a small room, the walls were painted in yellow. In the middle of the room was a table with two chairs on one side and a bigger chair on the other side. "Please take a seat." I nodded and took a seat. She took a seat opposite and started to pour herself a glass of water. "Do you want some as well?" I nodded and she poured me one as well, before she put a small bowl with cookies in the middle of the table. "Well my name is Maria. You can call me by my first name." "Okay." The woman was still smiling. "So I get you aren't really here by choice, but I hope that'll get along." I nodded again instead of saying something. "So you want to tell me about yourself? Doesn't have to be about your childhood, just something." I hesitated, but nodded. "Uhm yes. I am thirteen and I have worked since I was little as an actress." I hesitated, but the woman just nodded and gave me a small smile. "Okay. What do you like to do in your freebie?" "Reading. Listening to Taylor Swift's music." The woman smiled a little. "Hmm. I understand." She seemed to think a little, but then she had another question. "How do you like living with Scarlett?" I hesitated again. "She's really nice and she can cook really well." I started slowly, but she just waited till I continued. "Uhn and she takes good care of me. She took me shopping a few days ago and she got me lots of clothes." The woman nodded and gave me a warm smile. "Uhh shopping. That sounds fun. Did you have fun?" Her eyes seemed to sparkle happily. "I guess so." I said slowly and shrugged with my shoulders. The woman nodded and she noted something down. "Would you like to tell me why you didn't have so much fun?" I shrugged, but nodded. In the end I had promised Scarlett that I would give her a chance and I had to start somewhere. "I don't know. It was really full and loud. I guess." She nodded, but didn't say anything. "I was scared the whole time, but I don't even know why. It was like somebody was watching me the whole time." I tried to put my feelings into words, but I didn't really find the right words. "I don't know. It's hard to put into words I guess." She nodded and smiled. "That's okay. Thank you for trying." She answered and noted something down again. I nodded and hesitated. She continued to make small talk with me for some more time. "We have like five more minutes. If you want we could get Scarlett to come in so we can talk to her." I nodded and she got up. She was smiling again. While she was getting Scarlett, I wrapped my hands around my cold glass of water, before lifting it up and taking a few sips of the water to calm myself down. "Hey Lottie." Scarlett, set down next to me. I gave her a little smile, before looking down again. Scarlett put her hand onto mine and gave it a squeeze. "So Charlotte and I talked a little." The therapist gave me a short smile. "And I have to say that I'd think I would be good, if we see each other again. Of course only if you'd like that too." She said, looking at me. "Yes, I think, that would be okay." I mumbled. "Okay. Is it okay if I tell Scarlett a little about what we talked about? You can stop me whenever you want and I won't go into detail. There are just one or two things that I'd like Scarlett to know." "Yeah that's okay for me." In the end she would find out anyway, so it didn't really matter. "So Charlotte told me that she felt uncomfortable while shopping and that she felt like somebody was watching her." I felt Scarlett looking over at me, while I continued to look down. "Really? Why didn't you tell me?" She asked, but immediately shook her head. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked you that, but please if something makes you uncomfortable tell me. I'll do everything I can to help you." I nodded but didn't look at her. "I think, but of course I can't tell something after just one session, but a lot of what she said sounds like she might have social anxiety." I flinched a little. Did I really have anxiety? Was I so messed up? The thoughts were running through my head and I couldn't take a grip on any of them. "Lottie you alright?" I nodded, but Scarlett didn't seem to believe me, she continued to look at me. "Really I'm okay." I tried again. She nodded, but didn't seem very satisfied by my answer. "Okay. This would be all for today. If you want to make a new appointment with the assistant, okay?" I nodded and after we said our goodbyes, Scarlett made another appointment. We were now sitting in the car. I leaned my head against the car window looking outside. The music was playing in the background, but not one of us was talking. Back in the apartment we had dinner, before I retreated to my room. Scarlett tried to get me to talk, but I wasn't in the mood so I immediately went to my room where I curled up in my bed and fell asleep.
"Charlotte. Where are you?" I heard footsteps on the hallway to my room. I had pulled the blanket over my head and was laying there shaking. I closed my eyes, pulling the little brown bear closer to my chest, pressing my body into the corner of the room. "Charlotte. I'm coming in now." His voice cut through the silence and I heard the floorboards creak then the door opened. "You stupid thing. Do you really think that you can hide under a blanket." My blanket. My last layer of protection was suddenly pulled away. I clung to my little Teddy and closed my eyes. "It's your fault." The first blow came and before I could react the second. I tried to hide my tears with the Teddy but nothing helped. The blows cane again and again until he lost interest in me. He grabbed his bottle and gulped down the brown liquor, before he let it smash down on my head. I cried out and then. "Lottie…" "Lottie… Wake up"
I set up and grasped for air. The tears were streaming down my cheeks. Scarlett was sitting next to me on my bed and tried to calm me down but nothing worked. "Baby you need to breathe. In…. Out…. In …. Out…. You're doing so good. Just breathe okay." She pulled me into her arms and rocked us from side to side. "Everything is alright baby. I am here and I promise you that you're safe." I nodded and hid my face in her neck. Her hands were playing with my hair while she whispered sweet nothings into my ears. "Thanks." I mumbled into her neck. "Come on baby. Let's get you to bed. I promise I'll stay with you." I just shook my head, but she nodded slightly and moved me into bed. "Everything's alright. I won't leave you alone. Close your eyes." I sighed but nodded and moved closer to her, in search of warmth and comfort. I closed my eyes and mumbled a good night. She pulled me closer before answering. "Good night my baby."
