Chapter 1
"Thanks for driving." I said to the taxi driver, who had picked me up at the airport and driven me all the way out here, as he lifted my luggage out of the trunk. I picked my purse out of my backpack, before looking into it just to find almost nothing in it. Luckily the drive itself wasn't that expensive so I just handed a fifty dollar bill to the Hispanic looking man. He looked like he was in his mid fifties with some white hairs already shining through the originally dark brown hair. He gave me a warm smile before getting back into the car and driving away.
I sighed, putting my hands up to my eyes. The sun was shining ruthlessly down at me , here in LA it was around 30 degrees Celsius {86F I think} in the shade.
My small bag suitcase was standing next to me on the dusty sidewalk, my backpack hanging over my left shoulder. My hands were still clutched around my purse, as I walked up to the gate, leading to the studios.
"Hey. Uhm my name is Charlotte Young. I've got a letter from Joss Whedon. He told me to ask here, what Studio they are in." The woman behind the glass looked up, she looked annoyed but took the letter and read through it.
"ID?" I pulled my ID out of my purse and handed it to her. She typed some stuff into her computer system before handing me both the letter and the ID back.
"Joss Whedon. The new Marvel Movie." She picked up a clipboard with papers and looked through them, before looking back up at me. "Studio 13."
She opened the gate and I pulled my small suitcase behind me as I stepped through it. I heard the mechanism work as it closed right behind me.
It took me a little while to figure out where Studio 13 was, but the studios here were starting with one at the front right, two front left and then six in one row. Once I had managed to pass the fifth I crossed the street and walked past the other numbers before turning into the last street and walking it all the way down.
The sun was burning down and I could feel the sweat running down my forehead, the small hairs on my neck starting to stick to the skin and I started to gasp for air. Why the hell was school stuff so heavy and why was it so important to take them with me.
Finally I saw Studio 13. It was the biggest I had seen yet and completely grey, with a big entrance and a really big 13 painted next to the door in white color.
As I walked closer I could see a group of people standing close to the entrance.
I hesitated before walking closer, the group was standing close to each other, laughing and talking loudly.
"Hey kid. Who are you?" A blonde woman, who had seen me, was walking towards me.
"Uhm. Hey, my name is Charlotte." I answered very quietly, my voice shaking a little. Even after tears of acting I still couldn't fake confidence.
"Nice to meet you, Charlotte. I'm Scarlett." Her smile widened and I couldn't help but smile back at her. But suddenly worry took over her features.
"Did you walk all the way here from the gate? In this heat?" I gave her a small nod. She furrowed her perfect eyebrows together as she put an arm around my shoulders and walked me over to the group.
"Why didn't the lady at the entrance call? Well you, honey, come with me. The temperature is a lot lower inside and we've got drinks." We had almost reached the group and now everyone was looking at us.
"Scarlett? Who's the kid next to you?" A man with brown hair stepped a little closer to us.
I gave him and the others a small wave and smile. "This is Charlotte." She answered, introducing me to all the others. They greeted me back introducing themselves as Robert, the guy who had asked. Lizzie, the woman next to him. Two blonde men, both named Chris. A man with originally brown, that started to turn grey, named Mark and a young man, probably around Lizzies age, named Aaron.
"So you will be playing our little sister." He said and gave me a big warm smile. I nodded and smiled back at him.
Scarlett gently took my arm and pulled me with her. "I'll show you everything," I shrugged and tried to tell her that she really didn't need to, but she just pulled me with her. Inside the building it was pleasantly cool and I let out a happy sigh, to finally be out of the sun.
"We probably should get you something to drink first." The blonde showed me to a small room, with couches, a fridge and a small kitchen. "This is like the breakroom." She said, as she opened the fridge, to get me bottled water.
"And here we have something to drink for you." I took the bottle from her and opened it. "Thank you." A few greedy sips later the cold water got to my stomach and I felt it cramping a little.
"Come in. I'll show you your trailor. By the way, where are your parents? Shouldn't they be here or at least bring you here?" I shook my head. "My dad is very busy, that's why he couldn't come."
She pulled me with you to a line of trailors until she stopped in front of one. "This one is yours."
"Thanks." I told her as she opened the door and gently pushed me inside, taking my suitcase from me and putting it beside the door.
"You need some help with unpacking?" She asked, looking around, but I just shook my head. "No thanks, I'll be fine. But uhm when does the shooting start?" I asked.
"Tomorrow morning. There's a timetable at the door to the breakroom, you have to check that to see when exactly you start." I nodded to say thanks. "Alright I'll leave you to unpack." She left the trailor and closed the door behind her.
I started to unpack my stuff, for the next three months I would live here, so it needed to be at least a little organized. Pants in this drawer, T-shirts and Pullovers in the other one. PJ'S in the small drawer next to the bed and school stuff on the small table in the front part of the trailor. I didn't really own a lot more so I sat down on the chair and started to do school work. The more I finished today, the less I would have to worry about the rest of the week.
I was busy analyzing a caricature, as it knocked on the door. "Yes?" I asked, but I guess I wasn't loud enough, cause the person knocked again, so I just got up and opened the door.
It was Lizzie and Scarlett. "We wanted to get you for dinner." The brunette said, I gave her a thankful smile.
"Oh thanks. Let me just put on my shoes." I slipped into my old pair of black sneakers, they were almost too small, but my dad hadn't wanted to buy me new ones, when I asked him, so I guess those had to do for a little longer.
I followed the two women to a car.
"Since it's the first evening. All of the cast goes out for dinner together." Scarlett said, and suddenly I felt very thankful that I had grabbed my backpack, because otherwise I wouldn't have had any money on me. The taxi drive this morning had cost me most of my money, but I still should have about 30 dollars left.
I was sitting in between Scarlett and Lizzie as Robert was driving and ChrisE was sitting on the passenger's seat. They were talking about tomorrow's scenes, apparently only two with me. One of them is a post credit scene for the last movie, where you would see the three Maximoffs in their cells using the powers. The other one was for the new movie. We would basically stand behind Baron Strucker until we decided to run away, at least for me, as I didn't have any lines in either of the scenes.
Even though acting with lines was easier, I liked it better without them, as I liked the challenge of conveying emotions and thoughts just through body language and my face.
The car came to a stop in front of a restaurant, inside were already Aaron, ChrisH, Mark and a man, who introduced himself as Jeremy, waiting for us at a table.
The waitress came and gave us the menus. She looked slightly starstruck, but when ChrisE gave her a hug, she completely freaked out, not that she really talked beforehand.
I took a look at the menu. Even the cheapest menu was eleven dollars plus a drink, but if I would take a children's menu, I would have a drink included. The portion would be smaller, but I shouldn't eat that much anyways.
So when I was asked by the waitress what I wanted, I ordered a child's portion of noodles with sauce and cheese and water.
"Are you sure you don't want a real portion? Children's one are really small." Scarlett said, her voice was laced with concern and I could see that she was looking at me with worry.
"No it's alright. I had a snack while doing math a little while ago." I answered, trying to sound as convincing as possible.
Even though I was an actress I sucked at lying, so I was really relieved when she turned away from me to face Aaron, who she had talked to before.
The food came and while everyone was talking rather loudly, I just stayed quietly, only answering when spoken to and just eating my food. "What I meant to ask you. Where did you act before thus? Like, have you been in an any movies or shows?" ChrisH suddenly asked, gaining the attention of the whole table.
"Uhm yeah a few small movies but mostly small parts in theater." I tried to answer as vaguely as possible.
"What movies?" Robert asked and I sighed internally, great now really everyone was listening.
"When I was five I had the main part in a movie called 'The last Mimzy' and then two years ago in 'The legend of Longwood' but other than that only small parts." I answered looking down at my hands.
"That's impressive. How old are you 10?11?"
"13." I corrected him.
"Well 13 then. But considering the fact that you're so young, your resume is quite impressive." I just nodded and turned back to my food. "Robert is right, honey. It's really impressive, what you already achieved and how hard you work. You don't need to be so humble just cause everyone tells you." Scarlett said and I felt my cheeks turn red.
"Thanks." I mumbled, pushing all the feelings the praise unlocked in me away. Far away. In the farthest and darkest of my mind, just to never feel them again.
My dad had taught me that I wasn't worth it to receive compliments like this, since I already had a really bad attitude and ego, and that I shouldn't feel entitled to any kindness since I didn't deserve it.
Just because of that I was already sure that soon enough nobody here would want to talk to me soon enough. They would notice how boring, useless and worthless I was and let me down. Leaving me alone like everyone else did.
The laughter of other people ripped through my thoughts and for a short second I could really imagine being a part of this, but then I remembered everything.
As I looked into this group of kind and good people I realized that they could never find out what I have done.
