*Recap*
“I think it’s time for a DOUBLE DATE!” Alec exclaimed clearly excited. I could tell I had a horrid expression on my face from the look Creg gave me.
Chapter 11- When two stubborn people collide
“You know your cousin kind of scares me,” Creg muttered fixing his tie in the mirror while I was fixing my makeup. I snorted very un-lady like.
“Big bad Creg is afraid of Alec?” I teased.
“He’s too blunt for his own good, but I guess I should thank him.”
“And why is that?”
“Hmm, he kind of tried in his own way to hook us up, no?” he replied. I smiled. I hope my smile didn’t look too sad. He started kissing me. I pushed him off.
“I’m trying to do my make up here.”
“You’re such a girl.”
“Oh, I’m sorry, I wasn’t aware that you were attracted to men. News flash, I am a girl,” I said.
“Kate,” he groaned.
“Yes?” I asked sweetly.
“You’re too much to handle.”
I laughed.
******
“Kate!” I heard before I was tackled into a hug.
“Gosh, Alec, you’re acting like you haven’t seen me in years,” I muttered patting his back. He let go of me and beamed. Creg cleared his throat. Alec smiled at me before tackling Creg in a hug. Creg looked uncomfortable. I giggled.
“Is he always this ecstatic?” I heard a soft voice say, and looked to find a short pretty girl.
“I guess. I’m Kate,” I replied.
“I’m Riley. Alec’s date,” she said smiling at me. When Alec finally got off of Creg, we went to get our table.
“Alec this restaurant is too fancy,” I whispered towards him.
“Shush, this is my apology gift,” he said shrugging.
I found out that Riley was a shy, calm girl who blushed a lot. How she ended up with Alec was a great mystery, but they were so cute together. I saw Creg fidgeting with his tie looking uncomfortable.
“Not used to suits? The tie makes you look good,” I whispered in his ear.
“I always look good, and I don’t need a tie for it,” he said. I rolled my eyes.
Suddenly, Creg’s phone beeped. He checked it and I saw his face change. He was no longer smiling.
“What’s wrong?” I asked. Riley and Alec stopped flirting and looked our way.
“I’ve got to go,” he said.
“What?” I asked shocked. We were on a date.
“I’m so sorry. It’s just, yeah,” he muttered and stood up. He gave me a quick kiss and ran out. My mouth dropped open. Riley looked sorry for me, but Alec looked determined. He gave me a look, and I understood. I needed to follow him. I got up and walked toward the exit.
I stayed a couple yards behind him, heels in my hand. He couldn’t catch me. I got a flashback of that night a couple months ago when I was tailing Creg, and he got me. Creg was going through alleys. When I caught up to him, I saw that he had stopped in one empty old alleyway and another guy was next to him. I was behind a wall listening.
“Well, tell your boss, that I don’t work for him,” Creg growled. The man laughed bitterly.
“You think you have a choice, kid? You should’ve thought of all this before you got involved. It’s too late,” he spat out.
“I won’t go this far. You’ll have to kill me,” Creg spat back. My eyes widened.
“You’re so stupid, kid.”
“Well, what do we have here?” someone whispered and I jumped. I’m so stupid. I was so into the conversation that I hadn’t noticed someone had snuck from behind me. He grabbed my wrist and pulled me towards Creg and the guy. No, no, no, this cannot be happening right now! I tried to escape, but this guy was huge, and he held me so tight.
“Ricky, who is that pretty thing on your arm? You kidnap her, because no women in her right mind would come anywhere with you,” the guy said. Creg looked disinterested, not yet noticing me. Whoops, spoke too soon. He turned around and saw me. His eyes widened, and if Creg was capable of murder at the moment, I’m pretty sure I would be dead. He quickly put back his poker face.
“Shut up, man. I caught this chick eavesdropping. You want me to get rid of her,” Ricky grunted. The guy shrugged.
“I’ll do it,” Creg said nonchalantly.
“Creg is doing the dirty work? My, my, boss will be pleased,” the guy replied.
“Shut up,” Creg said and rolled his eyes.
“I think there’s another reason, don’t you Ricky? You think she’s pretty, Creg. Well, she’s all yours,” the guy said. Ricky dropped me on the ground with a grunt. I stayed in my place. I didn’t want to risk running at the moment.
“Have fun you two!” the guy called back as Creg grabbed my arm and started hauling me away. I said nothing; I was just trying to not trip or step on rocks. After passing through many alleyways, Creg finally stopped.
“Are you out of your mind?” he hissed at me. I winced at his tone.
“Are you like in a gang or something,” I mumbled. I wish I was a better actress than this. What would a girl who’s just found out her boyfriend is a criminal do in a situation like this? Would she cry?
“Why the hell did you follow me?” he yelled slamming his hand on the brick wall behind me.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered. Would Creg try to hurt me? Well, he’d be stupid to think he’d succeed. Creg ran his hands through his hair.
“This is not what I wanted. I did not want you mixed up in all of this,” he mumbled pressing his forehead against mine, his eyes closed.
“Why?” I whispered.
“Hmm?” Creg replied his eyes still closed.
“Why did you get involved in all of this?” I asked softly. I truly was curious. Creg sighed.
“Let’s get you home,” he said pulling away.
*******
“Ah, I think my show is on.” Creg said flipping through channels.
“Oh, really?” I asked bitterly, my arms crossed across my chest. Creg had been avoiding a serious conversation since we got back, and it was annoying.
“I have a craving for Chinese. I’ll go order it,” he said standing up. I quickly jumped in his way, and put my palm against his chest. Creg froze.
“Creg,” I said as sweetly as I could manage. He sighed.
“Tell me what’s going on in your life. I need to know what’s going on,” I pleaded. He must have sensed the truth in my words, for I felt him squirm under my touch.
“You’re a hypocrite,” he finally said and walked towards my kitchen.
“What?” I asked confused.
“I don’t know anything about you, Kate, why should you know anything about me?”
“Um, maybe because we’re in a relationship, Creg! Plus, you never asked about my past, now did you?” I said my voice rising a bit. I honestly didn’t know why I was getting so worked up over this. My brain told me our relationship was fake, but my heart believed it was real.
“I didn’t want to pry,” he snapped back.
“Of course, I shouldn’t have expected you to be good in this relationship crap,” I continued ignoring his reply. Creg laughed bitterly. I hated that laugh of his.
“You little bitch. Like you’ve been in any real relationships?” he asked titling his head. My face flushed at his words, but I gave him a sarcastic smile.
“You don’t know anything about me, remember?” I growled back. He ran his heads through his hair.
“I’m out,” he said and walked towards my front door, opening it.
“Where are you going?” I said exasperated. He couldn’t just leave when we were in the middle of having a conversation!
“None of your business,” he said and slammed the door leaving me with my jaw on the floor. What was his bloody deal? After staring at the door for a good five minutes, I let out a scream and kicked the couch. It toppled over knocking down a vase. My hands were shaking.
Stupid, stupid criminals. Who do they think they were? I took deep breaths, and calmed down. I even let out a shaky laugh. I was acting crazy. Creg wasn’t always sweet; that wasn’t a shocker. Plus, I could be annoying. I shrugged and decided to give him time. He’d come around.
*****
He didn’t come around. It had been a week since our little spat, and Creg had managed to ignore me perfectly during the whole time. He was acting like a stubborn five year old. The whole senior class was whispering about us, and it was annoying.
“Stop acting like a stubborn child and apologize,” Sorrow hissed at me during free period, while we were both in the library.
“Me? He should apologize,” I whispered back. Sorrow smacked her palm on my forehead.
“Ow!”
“Shh!” the librarian scorned. I gave her an apologetic smile.
“You deserved a face palm. You need to get your feelings out of the way, so you can think of this strategically! How the hell do you plan on getting information if you and Creg aren’t on speaking terms,” Sorrow whispered yelled at me.
“Fine,” I muttered back and got up. Sorrow glared at me and made an “I’m watching you” signal with her hands. I stuck my tongue at her, which caused her to roll her eyes. Creg was in the other end of the library, with his headphones on and eyes closed. I walked over and loomed in front of him. I knew he sensed someone’s presence, but he didn’t move. I sat next to him and tapped his shoulder.
He opened one eye to glare at the person who interrupted him, but furrowed his eyebrows when he noticed it was me. I gave him a small smile.
“Can we talk?” I asked him.
“We are right now,” was his brilliant reply. Hey, at least he was talking to me.
“Yes, but the librarian is giving me a death glare, and I don’t want to end up missing by tomorrow,” I whispered. Creg’s lips twitched up, but he quickly hid it. I had to resist the urge to smile wide. I missed his smile so much.
“Alright,” he mumbled and got up, heading out of the library. I tried to keep up. He stopped in an empty hallway.
“You walk fast. It’s like you’re trying to lose me,” I joked. Creg’s stare made m e feel stupid for joking. I cleared my throat and put on a more serious face. I swallowed my pride, and started apologizing.
“Creg, I’m so sorry! I shouldn’t have pried into your business! It’s just that I care about you a lot, and I really wanted you to be safe. I felt like you didn’t trust me, and I guess that hurt, but I understand! Besides, I haven’t talked to you about my past. I’m kind of embarrassed, and I didn’t want you to feel weird or anything.”
I knew I was rambling, but the diarrhea of words would not stop.
Creg pressed his lips onto mine. He sure does know how to shut a girl up. His hands gripped my hips while I put my arms around his neck. I had missed him, and it scared me. He pulled away and smirked at me.
“I think we just gave the school staff some entertainment,” he said pointing to the security camera on the wall right in front of us. I groaned and buried my head on his chest, embarrassed. He laughed. It was his real laugh, and I almost forgot my embarrassment.
“I accept your apology, Kate, but it was my fault. I was being a jerk, I’m so sorry,” he told me releasing me to look into my eyes.
“It’s ok,” I said. We both grinned at each other like idiots, before the bell rang.
