Chapter 8
After lunch, Ehan went out of the cafeteria looking for Ira, whom he found sitting on one of the benches at the basketball court, munching on a sandwich. She had her legs on either side of the bench, swinging.
Thankfully, neither Shruti nor that guy was with her, which made it less uncomfortable for Ehan to approach her.
"Hi," she said with her mouthful when she noticed Ehan making his way to her.
"Where are we going to study?" She asked as he stood at a little distance from her.
"Finish your sandwich first, we'll go to study hall after that" Ehan replied, pocketing his hands.
Ira shoved the remaining sandwich in her mouth and got up, "Let's go" she spoke, gulping some water from her bottle.
"What's the hurry? Eat peacefully" he said as she grabbed her bag in a hurry.
"I need to be at the restaurant by 5 in the evening. We don't have much time" she replied, walking ahead of him.
"Hey Ira, would you like to accompany me...?" The same guy stopped them in their tracks, standing in front of Ira.
"No, Honey. I'm gonna study for tomorrow's test" Ira refused politely, smiling at the end.
"Oh! I understand. Good luck, study well" that guy said, leaving Ira's way. Since Ehan was walking behind her, his eyes met with the guy, who was looking at him with a challenging and jealous look, Ehan just couldn't exactly decipher.
He silently walked with her, ignoring the guy's weird look. They went to the huge study hall and Ira gasped since she never went there. The place was huge with circular tables and chairs arranged everywhere. It looked like a library but it wasn't one since there weren't any books available there. It was the hall for making projects with your classmates, group studies, etc. There were only a few students there, either preparing for exams or busy with their assignments and projects.
Ira and Ehan took a table near an open window, facing the beautiful garden. Unzipping her bag, Ira took out her books. She placed them on the table, from which Ehan grabbed one.
"Which subject do you hate the most?" He questioned, so he could start with that one.
"Mathematics" Ira replied tapping her index finger on her chin and Ehan nodded, grabbing her mathematics book.
"Physics," she said next. He nodded again, flipping through the pages.
"Chemistry" he looked at her from the corner of his eyes but nodded anyway.
"Botany" she kept going. He glanced up, loosening his hold on the book, letting it close slowly. She has joined her hands together, tapping the index fingers of both her hands on the lips.
"History"
"Economics"
"Zoolo..."
"Wait" Ehan cut her off before she could add each and every subject to her hate list.
"Is there any subject you like?" He questioned, hoping she would mention at least a single name.
"Of course there is" she smiled. He heaved a sigh of relief.
"Arts" She proudly announced, grinning.
"Great!" He mentally rolled his eyes.
"You mean, you don't like studying at all. But you're good when it comes to art and related stuff" he pushed the mathematics book back to her and asked.
"Nope! Though I liked arts, I'm not good with it either" She replied, without hesitating a bit.
He looked at her with the weirdest expression ever.
"How did you manage to clear the entrance exams then? I mean, it's not an easy thing" he questioned, surprised more than shocked.
"Mary. She forced me to study day and night" she replied, leaving a sigh.
Ehan thought for a few minutes, thinking of a way to help her out. She didn't disturb him, letting him take his time.
"Your mid-term exam is on...?" He asked not sure of the date.
"Tomorrow"
"Have you prepared?" He questioned, though he could guess the answer.
"Somewhat" she said surprising him.
"Great! Now let's revise" he grabbed a random book.
"I said, somewhat. I haven't prepared everything"
"No problem. All you need to do now is to score passing marks. We'll think of getting good grades once your midterms are over" he said.
"Ok. By the way, it's a botany test tomorrow," she said handing him the botany book. He took the book from her and started flipping through the pages, whilst she kept a notepad ready in case he let her know some important points.
"Now listen carefully. The very first thing you should know is that it is not compulsory to know everything in all of the topics. But you must know something, at least something in every topic. Are you getting me?" He advised and asked to make sure she was understanding what he meant.
"Yeah!" She nodded, letting a smile make its way to her lips.
"Good. Now that you have prepared a few topics, I'll be asking you about random topics in this book. You have to answer whatever you know about it. We can't revise everything because of time issues. But in this way, you can score passing marks at least" he made himself clear and she agreed.
As he said, he asked about random topics related to botany and she answered to an extent. She was 20% exactly right, 30% partially right and 50% completely wrong. He made a few corrections in easy topics so she could keep that in mind while writing the exam.
"That's it for today. It's 4.30 already. Hopefully, you'll pass the test tomorrow" Ehan said, standing up to reach his bag beside him.
"Hope so. Thank you so much. I just can't thank you enough" Ira beamed, flashing her signature smile. Ehan just nodded in response.
They walked out in silence, Ira playing with every stone on her way.
"Hey Ira" they both stopped by Shruti's voice.
"I have been looking for you since very long. Where were you? You know, I have practised as Mary. Would you like me to do it again..." She yelled running towards them and stopped when her eyes met Ehan's uninterested one.
"Oh! Hi," she completely ignored Ira and stood in front of Ehan, flashing a smile at him.
"I'm Shruti, remember?" She reminded extending her hand. Ehan looked at Ira, silently telling her he was leaving.
"I'm Ira's best friend," she said further, squeezing Ira in the name of a hug. Ira made a face which clearly asked 'Since when?'. She squeezed Ira's shoulder to play along and she nodded, forcefully.
"I'll see you later" Ehan said in a whisper, which was intending to Ira but Shruti spoke in between, "See you".
Ira suppressed a chuckle and nodded at Ehan, letting him escape.
"He is sooo cute" Shruti commented once Ehan was out of sight. Ira checked the time and started walking in a hurry.
"Is he your friend now?" Shruti asked, running behind her.
"I don't know. All he talks about is studies, nothing else. He is like my guide now"
"He is too handsome. I want to befriend him. Would you please help me with that?" Shruti requested.
"You sure you wanna befriend him? He is kind of strange. Never talks unless necessary" Ira stated the facts, fastening her pace.
"Yes, I'm sure. Please help me" Shruti almost begged.
"Ok, will try," Ira said before disappearing out of the campus.
---
The next day, Ira followed the tips Ehan gave her. She did as he asked her to and wrote the exam somewhat better than she expected. They met after lunch as planned and Ehan helped her revise the next subject. Since Shruti or the guy had no idea where they studied, they didn't disturb them, at least at the time of their studies. Shruti tried to ask about Ehan many times but Ira usually remained busy with either her studies or her part-time job.
Ehan helped Ira with every subject throughout the week, till her exams were over. In that week, she tried to talk about Shruti but he never paid any heed. He talked only about studies and nothing else. Eventually, Ira gave up on Shruti's topic.
It was the day her exams were over and Ehan gave her a break after the last exam, so she could go home and relax for a few hours before going to work.
They were walking side by side, when Ehan commented, "Does your boyfriend have any problem with me tutoring you?"
Ira turned to look at him, not understanding what he asked and asked, "My boyfriend? What are you saying?"
"He has been giving me strange looks" he looked at someone across them. Ira followed his gaze which landed on the same guy, her classmate.
"Him?" She asked surprised as she pointed at the guy. Ehan nodded as yes, making Ira's confused expression turn into an unpleasant one.
"He is not my boyfriend" she declared aloud, looking at Ehan as if he had gone crazy.
His eyes narrowed at the statement, "You call him honey. So I thought... Never mind" he turned to leave, only to get blocked by Ira.
"I call him what? Honey?"
"Yeah!" He looked at the guy who was giving him challenging looks.
"Everybody calls him that. Shruti, Miss. Lorita, Miss. Stacey, Mr.James, everyone" She enlightened him with the facts.
"What? Why?" Was all he could say, giving her a puzzled look.
What's wrong with all of them?
"Because that's his name; Honey" she said in the utmost serious tone. He raised his eyebrows, startled by the piece of information. He turned to look at the guy; Honey. But he was gone.
He looked at Ira as he reminisced her words.
Nah! I came here with my Hunny bunny.
He is my best friend, my partner, my love, my everything.
Her earlier statements confused him which reflected on his face. He looked at her unconvinced.
"What now?" She asked looking at his unconvinced expression.
"You... The other day.. I mean, no, nothing" he mumbled shaking his head, taking steps ahead. He wanted to ask her about Hunny Bunny but he wasn't into the idea of poking his nose into her personal life.
"You look like you wanna ask something. You can ask me anything, I won't mind" She jumped by his side, stopping him.
"No. Nothing. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding earlier"
His answer wasn't satisfying.
"No. You can't leave until you tell me what you were about to say" She held both his arms, pulling him back.
"I said nothing" Scared of people's eyes on them, Ehan stepped back and freed his hand.
"You were about to ask something. I hate it when someone talks in incompetent sentences" she whined.
"I thought he was the one, your Honey bunny," he said with a huff.
She gasped. "No way. He is not my Hunny Bunny. He can never be my Hunny Bunny. He is at home" she said, keeping her hands on her chest at the name 'Hunny Bunny'.
"Home? Ehan raised his eyebrows.
"Yes"
"What is he? I mean, what does he do?" He wanted to drop the matter but asked anyway, taking steps to leave while Ira was jumping beside him in the name of walking.
"Nothing" she shrugged.
"Nothing? He came all the way to London to do nothing?" He didn't realise he asked that aloud.
"How could he possibly do anything? I brought him here just to be with me, to hear me, to make me feel less lonely, to sleep cuddling..."
His eyes widened and he almost yelled "Enough.. I think I should go home. I'll see you tomorrow" He ran away, not wanting to hear further about her Hunny bunny.
"Such a strange being! Talking as if my Hunny bunny is not a teddy but a human" She whispered to herself, as if she had ever mentioned to Ehan that she was talking about her toy, not any guy.
---
In the middle of the night, when sleep didn't consume Ehan, he started making notes for Ira, in the most simplified form she could understand easily, instead of playing violent video games or basketball.
When he thought deeply about the whole helping Ira study thing, he realised he wasn't helping her. Instead, he was helping himself. He had nothing to do earlier, which led him to think about his family and depress himself. But now, he had a distraction he always needed. He had something to think about and work on, besides himself and his careless family.
He was beginning to find peace in this new task.
