When the past comes back to bite

It has been a couple of months since I came back to Texas and to my surprise I managed to settle in well. Of course, there were some things that I had to get used to since the Toronto Fire Department's rule book is a little different. Still, I fit in well. Of course, we had our fair share of close calls. Right now Tommy, TK and I are on shopping duties. Apparently grocery shopping alternates between the firefighters and the paramedics. I just see it as a bonding exercise. Right now I am helping TK who is looking for a particular brand of corn chips for Mateo and Judd.

"This one or this one?" TK asks as he shows me two packets. I double-checked my list. It is a good thing that I made the others write down things that they wanted.

"That one," I say as I point to the correct packet. Well, I think it is the correct packet.

"They don't make it easy," Tommy remarks as she joins us with the last of the items. As we go to the check out I feel like I am being watched. Hopefully, I am being paranoid. It doesn't take long for disaster to strike. I bump into someone who I thought I'd never see again.

"Hello, Babe," The man sneers. Before he can do anything Tommy gets in the way.

"Leave her alone," TK returns the sneer. With that, the man leaves.

"Who was that?" Tommy asks.

"Just some creep," I lied. He is not just some creep. He is the man that single-handedly ruined my life. His name is James Emerson. He shouldn't be in Texas. James should be in jail in Toronto. He is a serial arsonist. I was the one that called him out. Because of that, he decided to make me his next target. Since he is here in Texas our lives are now in danger. It is all my fault. I try my best to push the thought from my mind. I just need to get through this shift without any drama. After a few minutes, we are getting the groceries in the back of the battalion aid car when I spot James again.

"Hey Babe. You have to watch your back," He basically catcalls to me from the other side of the parking lot. Luckily the groceries are packed before James can do anything. It has been a few hours since then and I am on edge. Right now I am on the phone with one of my old friends from the Toronto Police Department.

"I am telling you, Marc. It was James. He even threatened me. My Captain, Tommy and my fellow paramedic TK were there," I explained the situation to him. The thing is the last time James was in my life it didn't end well.

"Oh... While you were talking I found his record. You are not going to like it. He escaped. A riot broke out and he slipped through. Should I contact the mounties and give them the tip?" Marc asks. He does not sound happy about the situation. Neither of us are. After all, we are well aware of the consequences of being James' victims.

"That would be great and can you ask them to reach out to the Texas Rangers?" I responded. Even though I am still on the fence about forgiving my Dad, he is the best person for the job.

"I'll see what I can do," Marc replies. Before I can say anything the signal bell sounds.

"Sorry, Marc. I have to go," I say before hanging up. I quickly put my phone down before making a beeline to the ambulance. After a terse six minutes, we made it to the scene. It is an apartment block that is well alight. As soon as we pull up Tommy is giving us our orders. As per usual we will be triaging the victims until we can get back up. It doesn't take long for us to get to work. As I am triaging the patients I begin to notice a familiar pattern.

"Hey Cap, can you come take a look at this patient?" I am asking just in case it is my imagination.

"Sure. What are you thinking?," Tommy responds as she joins me. She gets to work on checking on the victim.

"The burns are caustic," I reply.

"You would be correct," Tommy said. My heart sinks. James is getting my attention. With that, I sprint towards Owen. He needs to know.

"Captain, I believe this fire was caused by arson," I announced.

"How can you tell?" Owen asks.

"A few of the patients have caustic burns. You have to tell the others to be careful," I respond. Luckily for me, Owen understands. He quickly radios a warning to the others to be careful. With that, I go back to work. After what feels like an eternity we finally have backup which means we can get to work on treating the victims. It is tense. I put it down to the fact that I know what this means. After another eternity everything has been wrapped up. To my surprise, there weren't many code-red injuries. Since everything has been done we are back at the firehouse. It doesn't take long for me to be summoned to Owen's office. He is with the AFD arson investigator.

"What can I do for you, Cap?" I tentatively ask.

"There is no easy way to say this but you were right. It was arson. Jason wants to ask you a few questions," Owen gets to work on briefing me on the situation. He is not happy about it. Neither of us are.

"Of course. Be my guest," I responded. Something tells me that the questions are going to be invasive. I brace myself. After a few minutes of questioning, Jason is satisfied. To my relief, they have already found evidence that backs me up. Of course, there were questions about how I knew but Owen had my back. After a few minutes, I was dismissed. I am quick to rejoin the others.

"What was that about?" Marjan asks.

"Well the arson investigator wanted to talk to me since I told Owen about the fact that it was arson," I explained.

"How did you know?" Mateo jumps in.

"Some of the patients had caustic burns and I am sure Tristian doesn't want to talk about it," TK answers for me. He is right. It would be better if the others didn't know about the real reason why I know that it is arson. The truth is going to come out soon enough anyway. With that, we fall into idle chit-chat. I am going to use the idle chit-chat as a reminder to relax. Don't get me wrong I am still going to be vigilant however the firehouse is the safest place that I can be for now.
