Nineteen To the Dozen

by the time I finished with him, Caspian's hair looked amazing. He was all set for going trick-or-treating this weekend, and I made a plan with both of them to meet up at my house in out costumes and then go around my neighborhood from there. Paris texted a few hours earlier to tell me he might be a little late, which was disappointing, but at least I'd get to spend some time with Caspian and maybe ask him about whatever the hell it was I found in his journal.

When he got here with his now two-color bangs covering his face and a full fur coat draped over his shoulders, I couldnt help but giggle at how perfect he filled the role. I was in my clunky ladybug costume Paris and I had ordered online, and I'd made little antennae out of springs and pom poms. They bobbled about on top of my head when I pulled the door open for Caspian, grinning.

He blinked at me, then smiled. "You look cute."

I grinned. "Awh, I know." I had a lollipop in my mouth, and the stick bobbed when I talked. "Paris said he was gonna be late. Do you want to watch a movie in the meantime?"

He nodded immediately, stepping inside and looking around as he kicked off his shoes and followed me into the tv room. It was big, with a sloped ceiling and our large tv mounted on the wall with long reclining couches in a sort of horseshoe shape across the other wall. I grabbed a can of coke from the minifridge we had set up in the corner and plopped down into my favorite chair, careful not to damage my costume. Caspian took the seat right next to me, glancing over. "What are we going to watch?"

I shrugged and passed him the remote. "I don't care. You choose." Opening the coke, I took a long swig, going on my phone with a hum.

We didn't end up picking anything and instead just debated on shows and talked about what they were about and how we liked them, and then there was a knock on the door and my phone buzzed with a text from Paris saying he was here. I popped up from the couch with a smile, bouncing to the door and pulling it open to see a grinning Paris in a matching costume.

I looked up to his face and gasped. "Your HAIR!!"

It was now a deep red, a color that matched the costume perfectly. He hummed and lifted a hand to it. "Do you think it matches enough? You were dyeing Caspian's, and I felt left out. Do you like it?"

I stared a few more seconds, reaching up to touch it. "I didn't expect it, that's for sure. But, since it's still soft....I like it."

Caspian stood behind me, frowning. "Copycat."

Paris glared at him, but I just hummed and tugged on my shoes. "Girls, girls, you're both pretty. Can we go get candy now?"

Caspian paused, then mumbled "Megamind" under his breath and reached down to tug his own shoes on. I grinned big, so happy he understood the reference while Paris just peeked at us in confusion.

After a few seconds I was standing again and slinging my bag over my shoulder, grinning big as I bounced outside and inhaled the crisp October air. There were a bunch of kids already out and rushing around, dressed in wild colors and costumes. I saw a few furries and wrinkled my nose, turning to see if Caspian and Paris were coming. Paris was right beside me, and he reached to link our arms, casting a secret smile in my direction that I returned before glancing back to see Caspian finally finished lacing up his shoes and closing the front door behind him. He glared at the way Paris was attached to me, but I figured that since we matched, it was only necessary.

"Let's go!" I pulled Paris down my driveway, candy already in my bag from the stuff i sneaked from my parent's candy bowl they were planning on using for other trick or treaters.

We darted from house to house, Caspian following without saying a word while Paris and I chatted away nineteen to the dozen, hardly even stopping to take a breath. After a few hours we decided to head back to Paris's house since it was pretty close by, most of the trick or treaters already gone back home because of the late hour.

Paris's home was small and cute, with all sorts of flowers and plants in the front yard and vines crawling along the walls, showing it had been here for a while. On the inside there were pictures of him and his family, who he told us were out of town visiting cousins, and it all looked very lived in and very Paris. It all smelled exactly how I thought it would smell. He brought us to the living room, where he plopped onto the couch with a yawn, his costume wrinkled by now and his candy bag full to the brim, not unlike mine and Caspian's.

I sat beside Paris and Caspian sat beside me, and Paris grabbed the remote. "In the spirit of Halloween, I think we should watch a horror movie. Have you guys seen 'The nun'?"

Caspian grunted. "Yeah. It sounds dumb."

"I think it's worth a shot," I said cheerfully, and Caspian paused before sighing.

"...well, I mean, not that dumb. I've heard good things about it." He pulled his fur coat tighter around him, and I grinned, slowly beginning to realized how obsessed with me he was.

Paris hummed. "I've seen it before. It's a good starter movie. Not too scary."

I rolled my eyes. "Just put it on, Paris."

He did, and he was right. There was a bit of gore in the beginning but it wasn't anything too bad, but both boys took the opportunity to grab my hands during the scary parts. I knew neither one of them was scared because they didn't flinch, and Paris even fell asleep halfway through with his head on my shoulder.

I smiled to myself. As far as Halloweens went, this one was a nice one.
