I love you
It's not true
Tell me I've been lied to
Theresa couldn't move. A shiver ran down her spine and she didn't know what to say, she was frozen in the cold grass underneath her body, where she sat. The girl didn't know what to say or do; she just hoped her friend would not have said it. With her mouth open, unable to speak she just hoped that she was trapped in a dream, beautiful and magic but at the same time like a nightmare, so cold and untouchable.
Her view was pointed at the dark, mysterious night sky in front of her, speckled with a million bright sprinkles, but she felt a piercing, prompting look at her face that came right from next to her and required an answer.
Crying isn't like you
What the hell did I do?
Never been the type to
Let someone see right through
Shannon felt unwell beside Theresa. She knew her friend had a difficult life, a shitty family that didn't care about her and the life she lived. Shannon knew that her friend wanted her whole life to find her father to be happy again.
She saw the two sides of Theresa. For one the broken little girl with a hard past and that wanted to hide this face from the world to never fall apart again and which hide her feelings to be inviolable.
On the other side, she saw the beauty and the strength of Theresa, her handsome laugh and how she could make every topic interesting and worth to speak over, the lovely nerd with her little interesting obsessions and habits. And she was sorry for Theresa that most people couldn't see that side of her because all people always see the bad things.
But not Shannon. She saw through Theresa's little evil face that she always put on, she loved her friend for the way she was. And these were the words, spoken in the cold night in July and that made both girls shiver because no one knew how to continue a talk after such strong words spoken. But Shannon didn't regret what she said to Theresa because she meant it, she had fallen in love with the best friend she ever had and now the words hung in the air like thick clouds which waited for the huge rain shower.
Why didn't Theresa speak? Was she unable to tell Shannon what was going on, or didn't she simply feel for her friend like Shannon felt for her? Overwhelmed from the feelings and the unspoken words tears ran down Shannon's usually cheered and pleased face. She couldn't hold it anymore.
„Please say something..." Her voice cracked as she looked over to Theresa just to almost don't see her face in the darkness of the night. She just sat there and looked to the moon, which was huge and bright in front of them and was the only light source nearby. Through her wet and drenched in tears eyes, she looked at her friend which was more beautiful than ever before in the light of the grey full moon.
Baby, won't you take it back
Say you were tryna make me laugh
And nothing has to change today
Theresa winced as she heard that Shannon was crying beside her. The black haired girl heard the crack in her friend's voice as she tried to break the silence between both girls.
Theresa was still paralyzed. She hoped Shannon would have made a bad joke or something but right now she could feel that her friend meant it seriously and she wanted a response. Theresa never meant to hurt her but right now she did the worst thing in the world friends can do to each other, she tried not to speak about it, to ignore the words, but her mind told her it wasn't possible.
Too long she lived in the darkness without knowing a way out and not able to find her light until she met Shannon and everything got just fine. Theresa thought that this friendship between the two was something special, and it really was, until she felt more for her friend than just a profound, friendly bond.
She never knew that Shannon felt the same way as she did and with the time she tried to suppress these feelings and tried to avoid the love she clearly felt. And she was good, they were nothing more than just friends with a little more profound bond that they probably should have had.
And now, in the night of all things, Shannon said to her that she loved her, that she had fallen for her. In this wonderful, quiet summer night when Theresa did not expect it and now the feelings in her body overran her.
You didn't mean to say "I love you"
I love you and I don't want to
Slowly Theresa let these words work in her mind, analyzed them and let them stream down her brain walls to absorb all the information she got from them.
She always tried to play like the bad girl and had this mask right in front of her face but now she felt like an open book, readable for everyone who wanted to and that scared her. She was scared that Shannon would leave her because she was too dumb to admit her feelings.
Her entire life felt like torture because her mom treated her like something that wasn't worth to live for. She didn't have a real time to be a kid because she was trapped with her mom, who she hated and her four annoying siblings, but she never accepted these people like her family. She wanted away from that life full of bullshit to the person she always heard glorious stories of, her father.
And when she was with 16 years finally old enough to lean against her 'family' she finally snapped out and walked away, to find her role model, no matter where on earth he would have been. But her way directly let her ran into the most magnificent person she ever met in her entire life: Shannon.
And Theresa knew her future way to find her father was very dangerous and risky and simply not made for a girl like Shannon in her life. She knew it would hurt them both but to keep the person she loved save they had to go separate ways. And just this imagination tore her heart out of her body and ripped it into pieces. She didn't want to leave.
Up all night on another red eye
I wish we never learned to fly
Theresa remembered the night they met; it was a quiet, actually peaceful night, just like this one. The moon shone promising on the night sky and let Theresa drown in the stunning ocean of lights together with the plenty stars around here. She was just on the way to her aunt Linn to get another hint for the location of her father.
She walked along the scenic road of the London Bridge with its beautiful light show of yellow and red colors which looked like in a dreamlike world far away from her strange, odd life. No car or bus was to be seen in the late of this hour so she walked along the driveway in an actually good mood.
And then suddenly she saw her; a girl which stood on the edge of the bridge. She had messed up shoulder-long brown hair with little curls in it and a lovely face, even though she seemed to cry her soul out of her body. Tears ran down her cheeks and she looked down at the dark, blackish water far under her feet. She just had to make one more step to fall over the rim and be gone forever.
Theresa immediately ran to her to save her.
„Hey Pretty-face, what's going on?" the black haired girl said with a calming voice.
The other girl sniffed and wiped the tears away from her face with one hand as she heard Theresa's voice. She now stood beside the crying girl on a narrow sidewalk on the bridge.
As the girl didn't seem to talk to her, Theresa just continued to speak with her. She wouldn't give her up because Theresa knew how precious life can be and that there's no reason to end it.
„Okay, you won't talk. But somehow we have to get you down from here."
„Please, just let me jump. You don't take any responsibilities for me." Her voice cracked and she began to cry even more.
Theresa just smiled at her and as their eyes met they both had to take a short pause from breathing to come back into reality.
„Oh, come on. We both know I won't let you take one more step toward this river." Theresa leaned a bit forward to see more of the girl's face as her hair covered her one half while she was looking again at the darkness underneath her.
„What's your name?"
„Shannon." Her voice was trembling as she spoke the word.
„That's a beautiful name." And Theresa thought it really was. With these words, Shannon's eyes lit up a bit and she began to smile shyly at her savior.
„I'm Theresa."
„That's a really cute name too, actually."
They both stood there a while at the edge of the bridge and just looked at the sleepy London. Everything was quiet until Shannon broke the silence.
„Theresa? I don't want to die..."
The girl smiled at Shannon and laid her arm around her waist.
„Then let's go off this damned bridge and get land under our feet."
Maybe we should just try
To tell ourselves a good lie
I didn't mean to make you cry
And now they just sat here in the cold grass and neither of them expected that this story would ever end up by confessing their love for each other.
Theresa never thought she would have friends. Maybe she never expected or wanted it because of the difficult and long journey to her father which she saw standing at the end of her road as her life goal.
She never wanted to sit next to her crush in a park at night and make her cry because Theresa didn't know what to say about her thoughts and feelings. What could she say? Should she said back this one and only 'I love you' and be together with Shannon beside this dangerous work of her father, or should she just say nothing, let Shannon go and let her live her life without Theresa? Maybe it was just the better option to let Shannon walk out of her life. Yes, their hearts would be broken again but even less Theresa wanted to get anyone she loved in danger.
The smile that you gave me
Even when you felt like dying
We fall apart as it gets dark
I'm in your arms in Central Park
There's nothing you could do or say
„I love you, too." Even though every single part of Theresa's body defended herself against it, in the end, she chose those words; just those four words that she had tried to suppress for so long.
Everything around them was quiet and speechless as if nature wanted to enjoy this moment as much as they both did. Not even the crickets made a sound or a firefly flew its way in the moonlight.
It seemed like a crushing eternity until she felt her lungs filling with air again. She held her breath until Shannon laid an arm around her shoulder and kissed her cheek.
They were lost into each other eyes and were just glad to have spoken those words. Shannon smiled at Theresa with this soft smile the black-haired girl has fallen in love with.
I can't escape the way, I love you
I don't want to, but I love you
