Chapter 7: Road Trip Part 1: San Francisco
I woke up earlier than usual.
Unfortunately.
Today was the day when we were, finally, going to Alaska.
I groaned.
It was too early, well 8 am, but still, that's like the middle of the night.
My door burst open and Drew entered the room with unimpressed look on her face.
"Somehow I knew you would overslept." She said casually while leaning against the door frame.
"Just a few more minutes." I murmured sleepily in my pillow.
"Nope. Nah. Now get up! Get up, get up!!!" She started shouting and when she saw that there is no use of that she climbed on my bed and started kicking me.
"I said get up!" Drew said before she kicked me so hard that I fell of the bed and landed on the floor with a loud thump.
"Ouch." I yelled.
"Oops."Drew smiled innocently and started battling her eyelashes.
I groaned more loudly this time. "Fine, I'm up. Are you happy now? I think you broke my kidney."
I said as I slowly started to get up because my whole body was in pain.
"I'm going to get you for this." I glared at Drew.
She just laughed and smirked at me. "Please. I'm been having karate classes since I was 7 years old. Good luck with that." She said as she made her was out of my room but paused at the door.
"You should probably shower and wash your hair 'cause you look like crap." With that said she left.
I groaned.
I went to bathroom to check myself in the mirror and I was horrified to say at least.
"I look like a homeless person." I said to myself. "Well that look has to go."
I stepped in the shower and let the warm water ran down my figure freely before I started washing my hair first.
When I was done I stepped out of the shower and put a towel around my body. I dried my hair with a hair dryer and left the bathroom.
I went to my closet and opened it searching for something to wear.
I picked a high waist dark blue shorts and a black crop top with the dream catcher painted on it. I also put on my black socks that were reaching my knees and paired them with my black boots, 'cause I have a whole room of only black boots according to Drew.
From jewelry I was wearing my black choker that had a little heart chained on it, a silver ring with little hearts on it and heart earrings.
I decided to put on a light makeup and my matte rose lipstick, I left my hair the way it is; with light natural curls.
When I was done I walked out of my room looking for my suitcases and duffle bag that I left in the hallway the night before only to find that they're not here anymore.
That was odd. I headed downstairs looking for Drew.
"Hey Drew, do you happen to know where my suitcases and duffle bag magically disappeared?" I asked her when I entered the kitchen.
"Oh I put them in the car along with my stuff. I couldn't wake you up so I put them myself. I was trying for half an hour but still nothing. You're the definition of the term 'Sleeped through a tsunami'."
"Well thank you for your compliment. And I'm sorry that you had to do it yourself. I feel a little bad now."
"Relax Lex. It was a piece of cake. Remember, karate classes since I was 7. This was nothing." Drew said in order to cheer me up once she saw how guilty I was feeling.
"If you say so." I said and went to hug her.
"Lexi. Can't breathe. Let go woman." She said while trying to show me off of her.
"I love you so much." I said to her holding her tighter.
"Lexi!"Drew screamed in my ear and I moved away from her.
"And I'm deaf." I exclaimed while she rolled her eyes. She was wearing black shorts and dark blue crop top with the gray wolf printed on it; she wasn't wearing any makeup except for her matte nude lipstick. She was wearing her favorite black choker with a little dragon chained on it and a couple of rings along with her star shaped earrings.
"Just sit down and eat the damn breakfast already. Come on, chop-chop. We don't have time to waste. We're already on tight schedule because someone overslept." She gave me a pointed look and I smiled innocently before I sat on one of the bar stools and started eating.
"Wait, what schedule." I asked her confused while I was chewing on some toast and fruit salad which she made.
"Don't talk with your mouth full of food." Now it was my turn to roll eyes.
"We're supposed to leave in 9 am sharp if we're going to get there according to our plan." Drew said while she packed our food in a large picnic basket.
"We have a plan?" This was news for me. When did we make a plan?
"Well, I have a plan. You just have to follow it." She said matter of factly.
"Okay so what's the plan?" I asked her once I was finished with breakfast. I washed the plate and put it in the cabinet on my left before I turned around to face Drew.
"Well we're going to follow the highway I-5 and we're going to switch every couple of hours so we could rest properly. You are going to drive first. We'll be on the road like a day and a half or two days until we cross the border. That is of course if we don't make any long stops in which case it could take us three to four days. I pinpoint on the map a couple of gas stations and diners if we need a short break and I put the coordinates and details in GPS. If we want to get there sooner we can't lose any time on resting in motels so we will just have to sleep when the other one is driving. Got it?" She asked while looking at me to check if I was following and I nodded.
"So far it's sounds simple." I said. "But I don't think that my aunt will resent us if we decided to sight see for a couple of hours? We could even stop in some bookstore if you like?" I asked Drew hopefully.
"Fine. But we're not going to stop at every location, just a couple. Okay?" I nodded feeling happy that she approved of my idea and excited that I will get to see new parts of America.
When I was away with my parents I only saw a glimpse of few places where we lived. Like New York, Boston, Virginia Beach, Louisville and Lexington. I could never make any friends because I knew that is only matter of time when my parents will get shifted to another state or city. The most of the time I was just walking around the city by myself with the map, and phone in case I lost the map; which happened to me, once or twice.
"Okay so after we cross the border we're going to continue our road trip towards Anchorage and then took our time to explore a little. After that we're leaving towards Talkeetna which is only two and a half hours away from Anchorage. Your aunt said she lives in the Talkeetna, right?" Drew asked me.
"Well, not exactly in Talkeetna. She said that she has a house outside of the city. It's a half an hour drive from Talkeetna. Somewhere in the woods or something like that." I answered her question and picked up a picnic basket.
"Okay then, are we ready?" I asked Drew since she was the responsible one.
"Our luggage is in the car, we have food, money is in our purses which are already in the car and I also took some of your cameras too. I figured you would convince me to stop and look around so I thought it would be nice to snap some pictures too. The windows are all closed and I checked an entire house to make sure everything is locked and secure. Yeah, we're all set. Let's go." She said excited.
"Goodbye house." I said sadly while Drew was locking the door.
"We're just leaving for a wedding Lexi. We'll come back. You're exaggerating." Drew said as we were heading to the car.
"You're right." But deep down I had this weird feeling that I will never see my house again. That I was going for a lot more than just a wedding.
I put the picnic basket in the backseat and went to sit in the driver seat while Drew sat in the passenger seat. I started the engine of my Matte Black BMW X6 M and left my childhood home behind me.
"According to GPS our first stop is San Francisco." I said to Drew while she was checking the map. "Also according to GPS it should take us 6-8 hours to get there. It was a good idea to leave at 9 am, to avoid the traffic."
"Yeah well, someone has to think about that stuff. You can't just hit a road and hope for the best, you have to have a plan." She said while checking the map and GPS.
"What are we supposed to do for 8 hours?" I asked her, feeling bored already.
"Well, we could always listen to some music." She suggested.
Drew turned the dial of the radio trying to find a nice song and decided on Stressed Out from twenty one pilots and we started singing along.
Not much longer after that Drew fall asleep, probably because she got up so early or she didn't sleep at all. I didn't mind her though, mostly because after San Francisco she was going to drive to Portland; which was a ten hours drive. We wouldn't be making any stops at Portland except to stop at the gas station and McDonald's probably.
My mouth watered at that thought. I didn't have McDonald's in a longtime, well a week, but still. Though, I'm pretty sure that San Francisco has a one or two or hundred so I can satisfy my hunger faster than to wait till Portland.
While I was thinking GPS started beeping signalizing that we entered San Francisco. I was so caught up in my thoughts that I didn't notice. I tapped in my phone to search for the closest McDonald's and found one that was 20 minutes away. I typed the location in the GPS and followed the route.
I pulled in the parking lot and turned off the engine. I unbuckled my seat belt and started shaking Drew by her shoulders lightly to wake her up.
"Drew. Hey Drew, wake up." She groaned and started rubbing her eyes before she looked at me.
"Are we in San Francisco?" She asked with a raspy voice still not fully awake.
"Yep. And I didn't kill us yet. We're in McDonald's parking lot. I figured that we could probably fill our stomachs before we go to explore the city." I said to her with a grin and her eyes widened. Well she was awake now.
She quickly unbuckled her seat belt and was out of the car before I knew what was happening. I followed after her but I left my car door open. "This feels great." She said while she was stretching.
"Yeah, it does." I said to her just as when I started stretching too.
"Shall we go to eat then?" I asked her while I picked my purse and my phone from the car as she did the same. "We shall." I locked the car and along with Drew headed to the front door.
We made our way to the booth on the left side next to the windows and waited for a waiter to come and take our orders. When he came I found myself starring at him. He was a good looking waiter, jet black hair and light brown eyes, he looked about our age, maybe a little older. Under his uniform he was wearing dark blue jeans and white T-shirt. He had a silver tag with the name Nate written on it in black letters.
I looked away from him and instead looked in the menu that was in my hands, I ordered Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit, Bacon, Egg & Cheese McGriddle, Sausage McMuffin, Bacon, Egg & Cheese Bagel, 20 Chicken McNuggets, 2 big fries and Iced Caramel Mocha.
He was a little surprised that I ordered so much but I was really hungry and I couldn't care less about what he was thinking. Drew wasn't that surprised that I ordered that much because she's used to it by now. I was always eating like there was no tomorrow.
She gave him her orders which consisted of 20 Chicken McNuggets, 2 big fries and big coca-cola. She smirked at me and I rolled my eyes. I guess she wasn't as hungry as me.
The moment Nate left us Drew started grinning at me. I was expecting her teasing any moment now.
"So, you like that waiter or what?" She asked while she was wiggling her eyebrows at me.
"He's...cute. I guess." I tried to shrug it off but she wasn't buying it.
"Oh really?" She asked with a raised eyebrow and her green eyes sparkled with a hint of mischief.
I gulped. She wasn't giving up that easily. One thing I know about Drew Mystique Freya for sure is that she's not a quitter.
"Yeah. Really." I didn't even believe myself. She continued to stare at me and I couldn't take it anymore. She cracked me.
"Fine. He is really, really cute. He even has a cute name." I admitted with a slight blush.
Drew just rolled her eyes at me. "I swear I have no idea how can you fall in love so easily?" She asked me with a confused look on her face. "You fall in love like...five times a day." She said and I scoffed.
"That's not true. Just because I think he's cute doesn't mean I'm in love with him. And I don't fall in love five times a day." She just raised her eyebrow at me and looked unconvinced.
"Can we just drop it, please?" I whispered to her once I saw that Nate was coming back with our food. "Please?" I said desperately and she nodded, but she still smirked once Nate reached our table with our orders.
We thanked him and dig in our food. This was heaven. I know that our parents wouldn't be so happy about this. They never allowed us to eat junk food because it was bad for our health, but it tasted so damn good.
So whenever we had chance we would often pay a visit to the good old McDonald's, KFC, Burger King, In-N-Out Burger and Taco Bell. Not every day of course, once or twice at week. However, we liked to make homemade pizza, to us it was more delicious and we could always experiment with new flavors.
"What time is it?" Drew asked while she was chewing on her food.
"It's half past three." I answered. I couldn't eat anymore, I was full. But I knew that in an hour or so I will be hungry again and my mum did teach me not to ever throw away good food, not that I would do it I mean come on don't you know me. I packed my McGriddle, fries and some of the chicken nuggets into the paper bag and then put them in the plastic bag before I put them in my purse.
Luckily, I brought my big purse with me on the trip otherwise I don't think it would fit. I still had some Mocha left but Drew also didn't drink her coca-cola so we will drink the rest of it while we explore the city. Unlike me, Drew actually ate all of the food she ordered.
I went to the counter to pay while Drew was looking for a map of San Francisco on her phone. We both had iPhone's 6 and we would switch our phones on daily basis so we had to buy phone cases only so we can identify them.
But Drew and I had a similar taste in that field, she would like my new case or I would like heir's so we switched them and after a while we forgot that we did that and we, again, started switching phones.
It became really stressing so I went to the store where I bought mine and switched my rose gold iPhone for a black one. The manager was a friend of my parents so it wasn't a big deal. It's a lot easier now.
When I returned to the booth Drew was ready to leave so I grabbed my purse and Mocha and left with her.
"Wait, shouldn't we first take our cameras?" I asked Drew confused as why we aren't going to the car.
"Check your purse woman." She said.
I opened my purse to see what she was talking about and found two cameras in the right pocket.
"But...How?"I asked her confused because they weren't there earlier.
"I put them in your purse while you were paying. I brought them with me from the car." She clarified.
I just smiled at her and put my arm around her shoulder. "You my dear friend, are a mind reader."
"Yeah, yeah." She said with a wave of her hand. We finished our drinks and dropped them in the nearby trash can.
Following the route on Drew phone we ended up in Alamo Square Park, a park in San Francisco. This park had a playground and a tennis court and we saw a couple of dog's with their owners too.
Drew and I took photography classes together and we were actually pretty good at it. We snap some pictures of kids playing on playground and I took a picture of Drew patting the head of the honey colored Labrador. I went to Drew and sit on the grass next to her and we started patting his head and scratching behind his ears, he was clearly enjoying it because he was barking happily.
I know he's a male because he had a collar and a little silver tile with a name Jax on it. As far as I know Jax is a male name. He must have heard his owner call out to him because in a couple of seconds he was gone.
We moved to the center of the park looking for something impressive and unique and then I saw it.
"Hey Drew, look!" I said to her while I pointed to Transamerica Pyramid building and the tops of the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge. "Transamerica Pyramid is a 48-story postmodern building and the second-tallest skyscraper in the San Francisco skyline." I explained it to her while she looked at me impressed. "I know something too, big surprise." She rolled her eyes.
"The Alamo Square is characterized by Victorian architecture, a series of architectural revival styles in the mid-to-late 19th century. Victorian refers to the reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901), called the Victorian era, during which period the styles known as Victorian were used in construction. The styles often included interpretations and eclectic revivals of historic styles mixed with the introduction of Middle Eastern and Asian influences." I recalled everything, everything that was in the textbooks and everything that my professor lectured in the class. It all came rushing back when I looked back at Painted Ladies of San Francisco. Drew followed my gaze and I started talking again.
"Painted Ladies are Victorian and Edwardian houses and buildings painted in three or more colors that embellish their architectural details. I had taken art history because I was fascinated with Victorian architecture and wanted to know more about it. For most people it was hard to keep up with everything from design, format, genre and style but for me it was like painting." 'Easy and beautiful', I thought.
"Well, I tried taking that class but it was all too much. I couldn't remember a single thing so I dropped and took Creative Writing classes instead." Drew said while she was looking at me.
"Art history studies the objects of art in their historical development and stylistic contexts such as art of painting, sculpture, and architecture as well as the "minor" arts of ceramics, furniture, and other decorative objects. I am an artist so maybe that's why it was easier for me to concentrate." I told her and she nodded.
"Probably. What else do you know, Clumsy?" She asked me intrigued.
"What I also remember from the class is that the in the United States, 'Victorian' architecture generally described styles that were most popular between 1860 and 1900. A row of Victorian houses facing the park on Steiner Street, known as the "Painted Ladies", " I pointed to where I was looking just a moment ago. "May be used to describe certain Victorian buildings, but do not constitute a specific style."
However, they were beautiful either way so I just had to take a couple of pictures of them. Drew took some more pictures of the Transamerica Pyramid and the tops of the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge and I joined her soon after.
"Well that was fun. Having some more lectures about art Picasso?" She asked with a raised eyebrow.
"No I think I'm done for today. But speaking about Picasso did you know that he also draw a couple of paintings about Minotaur?" I asked her with a grin and was pleased to see that I have her full attention. Since she was such a geek for Greek and Roman history, especially the religion. Due to Rick Riordan books so was I.
I didn't know as much about gods as her but I was learning slowly. I'm actually really happy that she and I have something that had held both of our attentions and captured our interests. Something to talk about and share opinions and ideas, something that we both loved equally, well her more than me.
"Really?" Drew asked and I nodded chuckling of how eager she sounded.
"But unfortunately I don't know anything else about that subject. Picasso was a bit...hard to concentrate to." I told her truthfully and then I wished I haven't because of the sad look that appeared on her face.
As fast as it appeared that fast it disappeared and she looked at me with sparkling green eyes and said: "Now follow me. It's time for me to lecture you."
She grabbed my arm and started dragging me through the crowded streets of San Francisco.
