Chapter 36

(Proposal pog?)

Jimmy woke up, yawning quietly. Like every morning, he was cuddled into Scott's chest. The cyanette however was reading first thing in the morning, unlike every morning.

"Good.... honey." Scott smiled, setting his book down to the side.

"Mornin' to you too." Jimmy said grogglily. He leaned away, reaching to his nightstand and picking up his hearing aids carefully. Scott let him put them in and turn them on until he pulled Jimmy back into bed. "Scott, I'm hungry." Jimmy whined but he still moved to hug Scott some more.

"Yeah but I'm quite cold." Scott replied, using his hand to card through Jimmy's blond hair. The ends were no longer fried, they had given him a haircut to get rid of everything that had burnt off. Jimmy wasn't completely fond of it, the haircut showed that the tip of his ear was missing and the scars around his forehead.

Jimmy hummed in agreement, it was pretty cold. He closed his eyes and felt the way that Scott's chest moved up and down. He could hear his light breathing.

It sounded a bit more wild than usual.

Jimmy ignored it, opening his eyes and pecking Scott on the cheek before trying to sit up.

"No, more hugs." Scott ordered, trying to pull at Jimmy again. He swatted the cyanette.

"Nope, I'm hungry and with my lack of hearing, I gotta at least listen to my stomach." Scott huffed but let him go, Jimmy walked to his side of the room. He pulled out one of his superhero shirts and threw it on. He didn't completely feel like putting effort into what he looked like today.

"Fine but we gotta actually do something today." Jimmy raised an eyebrow. That was new, since they arrived back in 3rd life, they had stayed indoors most of the time. It was safer that way.

"Like what?" He groaned, thinking about heavy lifting in the mines.

Scott snorted. "Nothing major, just getting out of the house for once. Maybe have a picnic like we used to."

Jimmy didn't know if he was implying when they were royals or before he had died twice. He tried to ignore it, instead just thinking about food.

"Nah, I want to stay in some more." He didn't want to have a picnic, the begonia and aconite had taken almost all of the grass around the pond. Jimmy didn't feel like leaving and seeing the warning signs.

"What if it's a date? I dress you all up and we have some fun together."

"That sounds like it benefits you more than me." Jimmy however felt a smile come to his face. He remembered when living in Rivendell, Scott would dress the both of them up and they would walk around the streets together, looking like the perfect couple. He kinda wanted to see what Scott would put together with their limited clothing. "Fine, but don't make me look stupid."

Scott nodded eagerly, "Promise!"

---

Like always, Scott went all out.

Jimmy pulled the Mazelean collared shirt and sweater on. It wasn't the colors of the classic Mazelean clothing but he could tell with the way that the thick clothing were still breezy enough that it wasn't hot. The collared shirt was white, the sweater was a baby blue color with a symbol on it. He recognizes it from his superhero shirt so it must be a S.

"Put on the overalls next!" Jimmy rolled his eyes. Of course Scott had a specific order he wanted everything to be in. He was going to leave it written on a paper originally but they both realized how much of a mistake that would be. Instead, he chose to be outside the door, wanting to surprise Jimmy with his own outfit.

Jimmy couldn't wait.

He put on the black overalls, listening to Scott and leaving one of the sides unbuckled. They were almost pristine besides a few patches on the knees that were a maroon color. Pulling his usual brown combat boots on (that he realized matched the maroon of the patches surprisingly) he was done.

Well, not completely.

On the bed sat the final piece of his outfit, the cherry on top. A beautiful twisted flower crown. It had red poppy flowers on top, sprinkled with some lavenders as well.

He didn't know if Scott knew that the poppy flowers were typically a symbol for remembrance and lavenders were for healing but it was a nice touch anyways.

Walking out the door, his jaw dropped to the floor.

Scott was sitting on the kitchen counter, looking completely bored as he waited. He wore a matching baby blue colored ruffled dress that went to his knees. It was off his shoulders, showing his collar bone clearly for all to see. A nice set of maroon flats were on his feet, he was kicking them idly around. On his head sat a flower crown, just like Jimmy's.

Instead of the red poppies and lavenders, there were malva flowers and green dahlias. Malvas meant protection and dahlias were for a new chapter in life. They didn't make sense to Jimmy for the symbolism. It might be to show their lives, Jimmy had the red poppies and Scott had the green dahlias.

The other two folowers must have just been colors that matched well.

"Oh! You are done?" Scott asked, finally noticing that Jimmy had entered the room.

"Uh, yeah I think?" Jimmy asked more than told, head tilting to the side gently. The flower crown shifted.

"Great!" Scott hopped down from the counter, his dress flailing as he grabbed Jimmy's hand eagerly. "Let's go!"

Jimmy laughed, shaking his head with love.

---

Scott had to admit, he was freaking out internally.

He had tried so hard to plan everything perfectly but Jimmy didn't seem that interested in even wanting to go out. He still smiled and all that but Scott could tell something was up.

And he was the one with a surprise proposal in his pocket.

Anyways, he pulled Jimmy along, bouncing on his feet as he leapt across the lime green grass. He would turn every so often, seeing Jimmy watching him with a curious yet endearing glance. He could tell Jimmy felt uncomfortable with his outfit, he would pull at the sleeves every so often and mess with the collar of his shirt.

Scott sobered a bit at the thought. He loved the way Jimmy looked, he looked so handsome just as he was and he was proud to have him as his own but he knew Jimmy had always had trouble with appearances. He struggled with it ever since he was a child, even when he had forgotten his memories and before he had died he had struggled. Jimmy would shy away when even his shirt got lifted a little bit over his stomach.

But now? Ten times worse.

There were times that Scott caught Jimmy pulling at the missing tip of his ear while looking in the mirror sadly. There were days that Jimmy would wear the heaviest of clothing, jackets apon jackets that covered every inch of skin because he felt uncomfortabel with his scars and mangled body.

So that is why Scott chose this outfit.

It was cute for one and Mazelea created longer clothing that didn't get as hot as other clothing. He could tell that Jimmy loved the way the sleeves flopped over his finger tips and the flower crown pushed his hair down over the cuts and scars on his forehead.

But what troubled Scott was his neck.

He had known Jimmy was obsessed with a scarf back then and he was always wearing it, even to bed. Now that he knew it was because he tried to take his life, he understood the sentiment. However, that didn't explain the behavior resurfacing.

Jimmy had never done it when they joined 3rd life. He never was wanting to cover his neck, he didn't have phantoms of them. But now he was pulling at the collars of his shirts a lot more.

Scott wished he could understand.

Regardless, they were going to have a nice day. Scott had an area set up under a cherry blossom tree, the area dotted with flowers of different colors. A picnic blanket and basket sat underneath, waiting for them.

Looking back to Jimmy, he watched the flower crown bounce on his head. He had put a lot of work and effort into creating the two crowns. He asked Joel which flowers meant 'I will protect you' and healing. That is how he came up with lavender and malva flowers. The other two, he just wanted to match their 'lives' they had. Green for him and red for Jimmy. He hoped it didn't mean anything.

"Ta da!" Scott said, gesturing to the little area he had made. Jimmy looked on with wonder and excitement.

"Picnic?" He asked like a little kid. It felt like he didn't completely understand the meaning of leaving the cottage until that moment.

Scott nodded his head, giving a wide smile, "Picnic," he agreed.

Jimmy, being the gentleman he was, helped Scott to sit down, fussing when Scott's dress got stuck in the basket and helped to set out the food. He looked at the food in wonder.

"It's just sandwiches." Scott said with a shrug as Jimmy took his own. He looked at it as if it were a treasure.

"A chocolate sandwich! I haven't had one of these since I was a kid!" Jimmy laughed, taking one of the triangular shaped sandwiches and having a massive bite of it. Scott watched as Jimmy groaned in delight, eyes widening at the sweet taste.

He smiled softly.

Sharing a few chocolate sandwiches in the garden alone was a calming experience. Scott would rub the chocolate onto Jimmy's face, making a mess while the other tried to clean it all up quickly. They would go about it over and over, hidden by the bushes. They were in their own world where they didn't need to be royals.

"Oh, you got some chocolate on you." Jimmy said, a smile on his face as he pointed to his own cheek.

Scott reached to wipe it off but Jimmy tutted him softly.

"No, no, my petal shouldn't get his dress dirtied up." Jimmy scooted over, licking his own thumb and rubbing at the chocolate on Scott's face. He frowned when it spread and tried again.

Scott loved the concentration in those grey eyes. They were the eyes of wisdom, constantly thinking despite not outwardly showing it.

Jimmy was just about to scoot back when Scott leaned forward.

Their lips met, Jimmy's eyes widened in shock but he continued the kiss without pulling back.

Scott could taste the chocolate sandwich in Jimmy's mouth, it was sweet just like him.

He could vaguely smell the ocean.

Scott deepened the kiss, pushing Jimmy onto his back on the blanket. The blond looked up with loving grey eyes. They both seperated for a second, both breathing heavily and staring one another. Scott leaned back down but instead of kissing, he hugged Jimmy. He was fully on top of the blond, burying his face to hide the red blush that appeared.

He felt the way that Jimmy chuckled and carded his hand through the cyan hair. It was shakey but it wasn't hesitant- it wasn't scared or nervous. It was comforting, it was familiar.

"Petal, is there something on your mind?" Jimmy asked softly, continuing to mess with Scott's hair. He wasn't pulling it out of place, he made sure to be careful but it was a soothing motion.

Scott pulled up, looking Jimmy in the eyes with a smile. "Just about how much I love you." Jimmy smiled back up at him and they laid there for a few minutes, sandwiches abandoned on the napkins and butterflies landing on them. Jimmy would brush away a cherry blossom petal out of Scott's hair, the cyanette just staring at the grey eyes in wonder.

They pulled back when Jimmy started quietly cursing and pushing Scott off him.

"Shit- my back is killing me. I'm getting too old for activities like this." He groaned, stretching to try and release the tension.

"Sorry," Scott apologized. Jimmy gave him a smile before sitting up.

"No worries, getting old has its consequences."

Scott wanted to bite back that Jimmy was supposed to be a teen and even then he was placed into an early twenty year old's body. His back shouldn't be hurting from something like laying on the ground with Scott.

They ate the rest of theit sandwiches in comfortable silence. Occasionally, Scott would describe a butterfly that landed on a nearby flower for Jimmy. Jimmy wasn't able to see the details with his struggling vision.

"Honey?" Jimmy looked over, sandwich no longer in hand but he was twirling a flower in between two of his fingers.

"Yes?" He asked, tilting his head.

Scott took a deep breath to get rid of his pounding heart rate.

(It didn't work)

"Jimmy, ever since I met you, we have been on a journey." He took another deep breath, turning to fully face Jimmy on the blanket. "A journey that we have both grown on in both good and bad ways. I love you, you are so cute and amazing. You have a good heart that I could only aspire to have." Scott walked behind the cherry blossom tree, retrieving another basket. He came back around with it, opening it gently. "Jimmy," he took out the flower boquet and the jewlery box, "will you be the honor of being my husband?" He held them out to Jimmy, hands shaking from adrenaline, searching for a reaction.

He was terrified

---

Jimmy stared at the water lillies.

"Jim Jim, you will receive water lillies just like these when you are older." The king said with a kind smile. He held them out for the young boy to touch gently. "They will be given from a nice young man or women, any person you choose to love and with your heart, it will be a very trustworthy and kind person. It doesn't matter if they are a fish hybrid or not, I believe that you can create unity. You will do great things, my sweet boy." The king chuckled when the child looked up with a confused face. "You may not understand now, but you will in the future. I hope that the person you love will be just as amazing as you. I'm just praying that your life would be better than my marriage to your mother. Grandpa believed in arranged marriages. He wanted to get with the cod hybrids in a childish manner." He scoffed quietly before looking back, the child playing with the king's hair instead. "You can love whoever you want, I will never let you be forced into something. Daddy will protect you."

Jimmy could smell the scent of salty lakes, reefs and seaweed. It reminded him so much of his father, tears were brought to his eyes. He hadn't thought of his father in forever.

The one person in his life that tried to make an effort to care but physcially couldn't.

The box next to the flowers pulled his eyes away. Inside were a matching set of necklaces. He knew exactly what they were.

When he started praying to Aeor with Scott, he had learned all about the elven traditions. He had planned on even proposing to Scott one day with a set of similar necklaces.

"Love whoever you want to love."

"Yes."

---

Scott's face brightened, throwing his arms around Jimmy and squeezing him tightly in a hug.

"Ow, ow, careful! Back still hurts here!" Jimmy jokingly swatted him away. He still smiled all the same.

Scott sighed, leaning into Jimmy. The sounds of birds chirping filled their ears.

"Husbands." He said, still smiling.

Jimmy kissed the crown of his head, "Flower husbands."

They snuggled for a bit longer.

---

In the dying sunlight, two young adults were in a field.

One in a beautiful dress that went to his knees.

The other in a casual outfit that was a bit too large in size.

Music played out of a portable record player.

The one in the dress held the other's hand and shoulder. The one in the casual outfit held his hand and waist.

They twirled around the meadow, necklaces proudly on their necks. The gemstones gleamed in the light, just like the rising stars.

Flowers seemed to bloom at their footsteps, new ones added to their crowns.

They looked at peace, nothing bothered them in the meadow where they danced alone. They swayed, they pranced, and they swooned in the chilling night breeze.

They danced through all the night under the magnificent moon, up until the significant sun rose again in the morning.

Despite being tired, they both had equal smiles on their faces, ones they were convinced would never go away.

In a marsh, a blond hybrid sat on the floor, staring at a ripped and bloodied photo. Glass surrounded him once again as he cried. A pressed flower and necklace lay abandoned in a nearby box, hinges broken as it lay on the ground.

The man cried, all alone, nothing but the sound of broken hearts followed.

(What? You thought you were gonna get something happy? Nah man, had some real life angst so i gotta vent somehow.)
