Chapter 3

Aithusa paces in front of her friend, nudging the long white hair out of his face in a feeble attempt to wake him up. She snarls at the dark dragon when he inches closer, a warning. Clearly the dark dragon thinks nothing of this and bounds up to the spirit's side, letting out a deafening roar that jolts him awake.

Aithusa covers the boy with her snow white wing as if to shield him from the dragon. As Jack takes in his surroundings as Aithusa grumbles darkly to ward of the other creature. Jack, finally able to get his bearings, looks around and comes face to face with a pitch black dragon with deep emerald eyes.

Just like the one from his memory.

Jack lifts of the ground and hovers over to the dragon, Aithusa's wing still separating the two. Jack holds out his hand and the dragon looks at it curiously. He moved forward and Jack tensed, thinking he was about to strike. But instead he nuzzled his nose against the cold palm, emerald orbs thick with sorrow.

"I think I know your master, can you take me too him?" Jack whispered softly, trying not to set of the seemingly temperamental dragon again. Aithusa whipped her head around in disapproval at Jack's request and pushed him away.

"Hey! What was that for?" Jack protested, and Aithusa shot a small plasma blast in response.

Clearly Aithusa was irked by the nightfurys presence but Jack had no idea why. Nevertheless Jack obliged and stayed away from the dragon until eventually it took of. Before it vanished Jack took sight of a dash of red on the dragon's tail, sparking a rather unpleasant memory.

It was the dead of night and Jack was shoved awake by a very nervous Hiccup. Their eyes met and Jack knew whatever was happening was serious.

"Jack we are being attacked, we need to go help the others." Hiccup said frantically reaching for a crimson tail he had made for his dragon. Jack shot into action, pulling on his riding gear and running after Hiccup. He whistled for Aithusa and she was there in an instant, saddled up and ready to fight.

Hiccup was already in the air battling this huge dragon, most likely a queen. Jack knew that nearby tribes had been messing around with a dragon hive, but no one on Berk expected this beast to be hidden in the caves. Jack and Aithusa worked as one, swooping between fire and taking shots whenever possible.

Then the beast let out the most horrifying roar and shot forward, towards Hiccup. Jack screamed at his love to move, fight back, anything that would save him. Hiccup stayed put until the very last second. Toothless took a shot hitting the beast square in the back of its throat. It burst into flames, smothering the soon to be chief.

"Hiccup!" Jack screamed.

The cracking of ice awoke him from his dream. Aithusa was standing in front of him, head cocked. Familiar faces surrounded her: Guardians. North picked the boy up and held him close, sensing his fear and discomfort.

"You're remembering." Tooth said, her voice dripping with concern.

"He had a dragon as well. Toothless." Jack breathed out, avoiding eye contact at all costs.

"He did indeed, and I assume you have already met Toothless by the state of Aithusa." North asked gently, not wanting to trigger another memory. Jack nodded silently, eyes fixed on the ground where he was drawing intricate snowflakes with his staff.

"I know this will be hard for you Jack, but we need your help in finding Hiccup." North whispered.

Jack tensed up and turned away, not wanting to hear the name again. Something was telling him that Hiccup didn't want to be found. If they were really so close and he has been alive all this time, why not find him? Why stay away?

A dim golden glow cast a small shadow on the ground beside him. Sandy stood their with a soft ball of light and a warm smile. Slowly he lowered the ball into Jack's hand, the magic seeping in, its effects instantaneous. A pleasant feeling of relaxation washed over his body, lapping like waves in his mind.

"Thank you." Jack whispered looking Sandy in the eye. The guardian nodded a small image of a thumbs up appearing above his head. Jack chuckled lightly and turned to the rest of his family.

"I think I know how to find him." North perked up and stared at him intently. "We need to follow Toothless."
