Ch. 12
“Excellent work, as always, Fräulein.” Klavier looked from the crime scene to the woman at his side. “And by the way, good to have you back on the field with us.”
Inari nodded, her newly repaired helmet covering her face. “Thank you. It's good to be back. Honestly, I was getting a bit bored with all the repair work I had to do. This…” She gestured to the gory scene before them. “This is a nice change of pace.”
Minerva had spent a good couple of months going to and from the prison to allow Aura to work on her spine. Simon was able to grant Aura permission to do so. Even after she regained the use of her legs, Minerva spent another three months repairing her helmet. It had been physically damaged and needed a lot of replacement parts, and due to the phantom hacking it, the entire system had to be built from scratch. It would've taken much longer if she hadn't already done it before. Through all of it, Simon stayed by her. He remained at the space center with her even after her spine had been fixed. Minerva knew he was capable of finding his own place or staying at his sister's home, yet he chose to be there with her. It was flattering, and it showed just how much he cared for her.
“By the way, are you still keeping the alias Inari?”
Minerva turned to face the man. “Well, I could, but I've no reason to hide anymore.” She slid off the helmet to match his smile. “Minerva Cyber at your service, Prosecutor Gavin.”
“Oh, how nice to finally see you, Fräulein! I knew you'd be pretty under that helmet.”
The woman blushed a little. “Please, d-don't say that, sir.” Clearing her throat, she turned her head toward the equally gory scene off to the side. “Who would've thought a double homicide could occur here of all places. Such a romantic destination.”
They were in the middle of a park at a beautiful gazebo. A man had been murdered inside the structure, and a woman just outside it. The two were apparently dating, according to their files.
“Indeed,” Klavier agreed. “And the suspect just so happens to be the woman's ex-boyfriend. He likely killed them both in a fit of jealousy.”
“That does seem to be the case.” The pair turned their heads to see Simon approaching. “I did a background check on the suspect, as you requested, Gavin-dono. He has mental health issues and has an incredibly short temper.”
“I'll add his information to my database.” Minerva put her helmet back on and clicked a button to pull up her keyboard, then typed up the details of the suspect.
“Thank you for your assistance, Herr Blackquill.” Klavier gave one of his handsome smiles. “As I understand it, you and Ms. Cyber work hand in hand, so I'm terribly sorry to have stolen her away for this investigation.”
Simon crossed his arms. “Hmph. Her talents aren't mine alone.” A smirk tugged at his lips. “But be warned, should I take on a case, our little Vixen will join me. You'll have to make do without her.”
Klavier chuckled. “As harsh as always, I see.”
With Minerva’s capabilities, the investigation was wrapped up pretty quickly. With the evidence collected and a faithful simulation of what transpired, Klavier had all he needed to put the criminal behind bars.
“You have my gratitude for all your help, Fräulein,” the blond man said, his hands on his hips as he leaned forward slightly. “How about I treat you to dinner after the trial?”
Simon’s face immediately twisted into a scowl, all while Minerva swiftly waved her hands in front of her. “No, no thank you. I appreciate the offer but I'm very busy.”
“Come on, one little date won't take too much time.”
“I'm flattered, really. But I can't.”
Klavier sighed. “Very well. I'll just have to settle for our investigations then. I'll give you a call should I need anything else, but I think we can wrap this up for today.”
“Okay. I'll be in touch, sir.”
“I'll take my leave as well,” Simon added. “I've no reason to stick my nose in a case that isn't mine.”
Simon left the park trailing behind Minerva. He had no trouble spotting her bright pink car in the parking lot. However, he did pause briefly to be sure no one else was around before he went and climbed in on the passenger side. Their relationship was kept private from their peers, hence Klavier’s ignorance on the matter. Only a select few knew they were dating, as their relationship could be seen as untoward in their line of work.
Minerva got behind the wheel and started the car, causing Vada to start up. “Welcome back, Minerva, Simon. What can I do for you?”
“Take us home, Vada.”
“As you wish.”
The car started moving with Vada in control. Minerva took off her helmet and carefully placed it in the backseat. Simon reached over, taking the blonde’s hand. She looked at him inquisitively, noticing the deep frown on his lips. His hand gripped hers tight.
“That pompous playboy,” he muttered. “How dare he make a move to steal you away. Who does he think he is?”
“He just doesn't know about us,” Minerva assured. “Prosecutor Gavin is a nice guy. He wouldn't knowingly do that.”
“Hmph. I respect his talent as a prosecutor, but he's not as kind as you think him to be. He's a rock star, Minerva. He's accustomed to the attention he gets from women. He'd break your heart, given the chance.”
“Well it's a good thing I don't fall for pretty boys then, huh?” The woman smiled, placing her other hand over his. “In all seriousness though, you don't have to worry so much. You know I'm loyal to you.”
Simon suddenly leaned over, dipping his head down enough to plant a kiss to the side of her neck. “I know, but that won't stop devious men from approaching you. Perhaps I should leave my mark on you, just in case.” He smirked impishly at the soft gasp that escaped her.
“S-Simon, you shouldn't…”
Minerva was blushing. She felt his lips on her neck a second time, lingering longer than the first time. Despite her response, if it weren't for the confines of the car and seatbelts, she would've leaned right into him for more. She loved whenever he kissed her because it allowed her to feel the genuine love and gentleness he normally didn't show.
“My scans are detecting rising body temperatures and quickening pulses.” The two froze upon hearing Vada’s analyses. “Are you both feeling well?”
Minerva lightly pushed Simon off her. “We're fine.”
Simon held back a chuckle of amusement. “Actually, we were in the midst of a moment of intimacy that you so rudely interrupted.”
“Simon, don't teach her about that!” the blonde scolded.
“My apologies,” Vada interrupted, her voice chipper and kind. “I did not realize. If you wish to better enjoy intimacy, you are free to move to the back. I will handle the driving.”
A laugh erupted from Simon, though even he had a light dusting of pink on his face. “Not a bad idea!”
“No, bad idea!” Minerva argued. “We're not doing that!”
“But it is important for couples to experience intimacy,” Vada argued, “for it allows them to build a meaningful connection. Whether emotional or physical, intimacy is crucial in building trust and allowing for communication.”
The pair both stared at the face on the screen in shock, until Minerva asked, “Where did you learn all that?”
“From an audiobook Athena listened to when she last rode with me. It was about the fundamentals of a successful relationship. It was her hope that this advice would be good for the two of you.”
“Well…it's unnecessary,” the blonde answered. “We don't need to hear about this. Just…turn on some music.”
“As you wish, Minerva.”
Some cheery pop music began to play from the speakers. Minerva felt the heat of her face finally subsiding. When she glanced over at Simon, he had his eyes closed and arms crossed, though his pale face was bright red. The woman held back the urge to giggle at him. It seemed Vada had gotten to him with her intrusive analyses and suggestions.
Upon reaching the space center, Vada parked and the two got out. Simon whistled to the hawk flying overhead, calling him down to perch on his shoulder. Taka had taken to nesting around the space center lately, likely because that's where Simon was most of the time now. They went inside and took the elevator up to their residence. As soon as they stepped into the home, Taka flew over to the sofa to preen. That's when Minerva felt his arms snake around her, pressing her back against him. Simon rested his chin atop her head, humming softly in thought.
“You know, it has been a while since we've spent time alone.”
Minerva clutched her helmet, leaning back into him. “That's because we've been busy. I had to work hard on getting my helmet operational again.”
“Not to mention that, just before, we had to get your spine repaired. That took longer than I would've liked.”
“Well, the parts are special in the way they're made. Just any old scrap wouldn't do.” She placed a hand over one of his arms. “And I'm grateful for all your help through every step of it.”
“Think nothing of it, my dear.” She smiled at the pet name, feeling him kiss the top of her head. “I would do it all over again, hundreds of times, if need be.” A smirk crept across his lips. “Do you remember after your first month of repairs, when you thought you were well enough to walk?”
“I do. You caught me when I nearly fell and hit my head on the coffee table. I would've had to go to the hospital if it weren't for your quick reflexes.”
“Indeed. But while you couldn't use your legs yet, you had retained some sensation in your lower half. We tested it, remember?” Minerva’s face lit up. “Oh, the sweet sounds you made. I did so enjoy every second of it.”
“S-Simon, why…bring that up now?”
“Because that was the last time we shared such intimacy. Perhaps Vada is onto something.” He moved an arm to slide a hand down her stomach, stopping just above her lower regions. “I quite like lavishing you with attention after you've worked so hard.”
Minerva was a blushing mess as she stared down at his strong arms timidly. “I…I wouldn't be against it. But what if Prosecutor Gavin tries to call me? He might need me before his trial tomorrow.”
“Hmph. Thinking of him already, are you? I assure you, he'll survive without you.” Simon nipped at her ear, turning on the charm.
She bit her lip to stifle the hum of pleasure in her throat. “But what if-”
“If you bring up that pompous playboy one more time, I'll be forced to cut him down!” the man warned. He felt his lover flinch in his hold, so he turned her to face him and kissed her lips. “Please, I merely ask for your full attention now, while we've the time,” he mumbled against her lips.
Minerva broke the kiss to smile at him, hearing his plea and finding it difficult to refuse. She did, in fact, want this as much as he did. “You can have it, Simon.”
With the man following closely, she moved to set her helmet on the coffee table. As soon as she faced him again, Simon scooped her up, planted her on the sofa, and was on top of her in an instant. His lips were on her neck, forcing a loud gasp from her followed by a moan of his name. Taka gave a startled screech before jumping on Simon, grabbing his unruly ponytail in his talons, and yanking at him.
Simon sat up in an instant, swatting the bird off him with a grunt of displeasure. “What's gotten into you, Taka?”
The hawk moved next to Minerva, rubbing his head against her cheek, causing her to pet him. “I think…” The blonde giggled lightly. “Either Taka is jealous, or he thought you were hurting me.”
“I have to contend with my own feathered friend now, do I?” Simon got up with a sigh. “Vada should've mentioned the trials that come with relationships. Vying for your lover’s attention can be quite troublesome.” Minerva held back a laugh, watching him whistle to the bird. “Come, Taka.”
Taka obediently flew up to his master’s shoulder as if he hadn't just attacked him a moment ago. Simon moved to the nearest window, opened it, and allowed the hawk to fly out before shutting it again. When he turned back around, Minerva was sitting up.
“Getting rid of him, just like that?” she teased. “It's not like you to send Taka away.”
The man smirked. “Nothing comes between me and my target, not even Taka.” If Minerva didn't know him so well, that would've sounded like a threat. He approached her, his eyes subtly roaming her. “Don't think I'm done with you yet.”
Minerva felt her face heating up again. Simon dropped to his knees in front of her, placing himself at her level. His smirk seemed to widen when he noticed her legs moving apart, and he took the opportunity to move himself between them, effectively pressing their bodies together. His hands rested on either side of her while hers wrapped around his neck. Their lips met for a deep kiss that left them breathless.
“I love you, Simon,” Minerva quietly admitted, locking eyes with the man. “I hope you know how much you mean to me. All those years, you were always on my mind.”
Simon stared at her, his normally stoic expression softening. He brought a hand up to brush some hair out of her face before pressing his palm against her cheek. “I know. Your letters made that all quite clear. I was able to keep going because you and Athena needed me to. I love you as well, Minerva. I vow to protect you with my life. Never again will I let anyone hurt you.”
“Ever the loyal samurai,” Minerva said with a happy sigh.
Simon Blackquill, the Twisted Samurai, had earned a life he never would've dreamt of having. After taking the blame for a crime he didn't commit, and rotting away in jail until his execution, the last thing he expected to have was a bright future as a prosecutor with the woman he fell in love with by his side. And Minerva Cyber, despite the trials and tribulations over the years, was happy with how things had turned out. They'd all been freed from the shackles of the past, and now they could all move forward together.
The End
