Chapter Four
Desiree was home alone, getting a break from work. Working seven days a week was really killing her. She had to hire more helpers, because she couldn't do it on her own anymore. Even though Tori was a big help at times. She had a life outside of work, also. Two weeks had passed, since they started their sex rendezvous, and honestly, she was exhausted. Gregg was like an energizer bunny that didn't get tired.
He was at work for the day, so Desiree was using her free time to relax and sleep. She needed it. As she was napping, a knock came at her door. She groaned in frustration.
"Go away." She yelled out. She wasn't up for seeing anyone today. She wanted to rest her body.
"Girl, if you don't open this door." She heard her mother said.
Desiree huffed, as she got up off the couch she was laying on. She went to open the door for her parents. She made sure she had a smile on her face when she opened the door.
"Hello, parents." She greeted them with a hug. Her parents walked in her house when she moved out of their way. She already knew she was about to hear her mother's mouth. She didn't want to, but she knew it was coming. She was ready for it.
"What are you doing laying around this late in the day? I know you have some chores to do." Her mother, SiMone said. Here she go. Desiree tried her best not to roll her eyes upward.
"Mom, really? I don't have chores anymore. I clean my house every day before I go to work." Desiree walked in the kitchen to put on a pot of tea for her parents.
"You're doing well for yourself, princess." Her father, Daniel said. Her father knew just what to say to make her feel better, unlike her mother.
SiMone glanced at her husband, and rolled her eyes. Desiree's parents were a good looking couple. Her mother was Caucasian and her father was African American. Desiree sometimes wondered if her parents had a hard relationship, since they were an interracial couple. She never got a chance to really talk to her parents about their life, or how was it growing up for them. Now that she thought about it, she really didn't know anything about her parents. She just knew enough.
"Yes she's doing well for herself, but she can do better. Working at a hair store? Come on, Dessy, you can do much better than that. Have a career." SiMone shook her head. She wanted the best for her daughter and knew she could do better than that hair store she owned. She wanted her daughter to be like her, well0known. Where ever SiMone went, people knew who she was. She and her husband were both criminal defense lawyers. They won a lot of cases, and helped a lot of people get off, from going to jail for a long period of time. When you heard their names, they were recognized as overall good people.
"Mom, my hair store is my baby. That's my career. When you and dad set me free at eighteen, you wanted me to make my own decisions and that's what I'm doing." Desiree got out the sugar for her parents' tea.
"Yes, I thought you would at least go to college and get an education." SiMone argued.
"Mom, I'm in college now for business. If you would listen to me when I talk, you would know, but you don't. If I wasn't in college going to school for business, do you think I would have my own business? No, I wouldn't." Desiree answered her own question. She was tired of her mother judging her, because she didn't do what she wanted her to do with her life. Her mother wanted her to follow into their footsteps in being a lawyer. Desiree wasn't going to do that, she didn't even like getting pulled over by the police for speeding. Why would she want to sit in front of some people all day telling them, what they needed to do, or what they shouldn't do? No, thank you. She would leave that to her parents.
"Don't sass me, little girl." Her mother snapped at her. Desiree shook her head at her mother, but kept her mouth shut.
"SiMone, you came in here, starting trouble with the girl for no reason. Cut her some slack. She's trying. Look at her, she has her own house, car, and business. She got it on her own. What else you want her to do?" Daniel asked. SiMone just glared at her husband, while Desiree smiled at her dad for having her back.
"Are you two hungry? I can make us grilled cheese sandwiches with a garden salad." Desiree looked at her parents. They never really stayed over her house long when they visit. She would love some of their company.
"I guess." SiMone muttered. Desiree shook her head as she got things together for her light meal she was about to make.
"And when are you going to settle down? You're not getting any younger you know and I want grandkids" Her mother pouted. Here she go, again. Desiree was definitely not about to have any kids, especially if it meant her mother would be breathing down her back even more. She didn't have time for that.
"Mom, I'm not looking for a relationship right now. I don't need the stress and a man wondering where I'm at all the time. I like my freedom." Desiree said. That was true, that's why she agreed to strictly sex with Gregg.
"That's right, baby girl. You don't need a man. Just continue to do you and don't worry about a man." Her father said, smiling at Desiree.
"Well, I want grandkids." SiMone pouted.
"Well you won't be getting any from me." Desiree said. Kids wasn't in her future at all. Desiree had too much going on for herself. She wasn't ready to be someone mother; nor was she ready for that responsibility.
"She have her whole life to worry about kids and a relationship. I say wait until you at least fifty." Her dad smiled, while Desiree laughed.
Gregg was just getting off work when he entered the house he shared with his grandpa. He had to hire a nurse to help him with his grandpa. He wasn't there all the time, and he needed someone with his grandpa when he was out.
"How you doing, old man?" He asked his grandpa who was laying down looking at The Andy Griffith Show.
"I would be doing great if I could eat some real food." His grandpa pouted. His grandfather didn't take his eyes off the television.
"But you have no teeth." Gregg chuckled, only making his grandpa glare at him in return. George Combs was a sixty-three widower after losing his wife to cancer. He took in his grandson, Gregg, when his son and daughter-in-law got killed in a bank robbery. He had a stroke at the age of sixty years old and had to live with his grandson. He didn't like the fact that he couldn't do things for himself. He didn't mind being taking care of by the nurse that comes and helps out his grandson, but he wished he could do it himself.
"I would have some if you would stop being stingy and take me to the dentist. I hate looking in that lady face smiling with no teeth in my mouth. That's not right," George pouted again, as Gregg laughed.
"Fine, I'll take you to the dentist tomorrow to see what they can do." Gregg said while laughing. His grandpa was truly a mess. George had no filter when it came to certain things.
"When you going to settle down?" His grandpa asked him.
"When I'm around your age." Gregg replied back. Settling down wasn't on Gregg's mind, and it didn't need to be.
"Your nuts will be hanging to your ankles by that time." George said and Gregg burst out laughing.
"You not right, grandpa. You wrong for that." Gregg wiped the tears that were falling down his face from laughing so hard. George smiled.
"I want great grandchildren, before the Lord calls me home." George finally stated. Gregg looked at his grandpa. He hated when his grandfather talk like that. He had so much more to live for. Gregg needed him to stop talking like that. Gregg didn't know what he would do if he lost his grandfather.
"You not leaving me no time soon. So stop talking like that." Gregg said.
"I know. I'm just talking. I just don't want you to be lonely when I finally leave this earth." George looked over at Gregg.
"I won't be, I have Toby." Gregg said. Toby and Gregg were friends for a long time now. They always relied on each other for certain things.
"If you say so, but if you find that special someone, don't mess around on her, son. She will be a keeper. Like your grandma was to me." George added.
"I'll keep that in mind. You get some rest." Gregg said and walked out his grandpa's room.
