47: RUN!

"Uh, guys." Leanne said. "We still need to set up the booth... But we won't be late for the opening."

"Never mind." Jeff returned. "Gym's still closed."

"Let's sit down!" Ciel landed on the grass in front of the grandstand, and the others followed.

Today was their school's fair, and each section (except for Grade Eleven and Twelve) had their own booth to maintain. Grade Seven was stationed at the second floor of the gym (the basketball court).

"Ooh!" Riannon looked at Kim's hand. "Did you draw that?"

"Hm? Yeah." She nodded, showing the 'cardboard bird'. "I just got bored."

"Do we have any plans for the fair?" Jabari asked the others.

"Ride that!" Hansel cheered, pointing at the structure. It was The Spider, but the ride's type was an octopus. It was also the  only one... Besides the two inflatables.

"Hey!" Gavin yelled after a while of chatting. "It's starting!"

"Subjects of Wonderland!" A man (or a Grade Ten student) in white announced. "Today is the awaited coronation of Princess Ivory!"

"Woo!" Some students cheered.

Trumpets rang, and within a line of guards dressed in white, the soon-to-be-queen, Ivory, made her way down the white aisle to the stage.

"All rise."

After doing a few royal things for the coronation, the golden crown sat upon Queen Ivory's head. She smiled at everyone.

"Guys." Cheese Roll whispered to her classmates nearby. "The Jailers are nearby."

Jailers... Gale took a deep breath. An upper year student had informed them that once the opening ceremony was over...

"In the spirit of this wonderful event!" The emcee said. "We have prepared a dance number to be performed by the best in all of the land."

And so, everyone remained standing, watching the school's dance club. Gale looked behind him after he saw Jeff do the same.

The Jailers, in their black uniforms and yellow police tape bandannas, were holding either ribbons or belts.

"Oh, nope." Carl quickly looked away.

"Denise," Andy nudged the boy with his hand slightly. "Stop."

"Ssshhh..." He still stood close to him. "They're coming..."

The music kept playing. The Jailers were moving in. The Meme students slowly inched their way to the pathway beside the grandstand that led to a road to the gym. It wasn't far, but since their soon-to-be pursuers were Grade Ten, their chances of making it out alive altogether seemed small.

The music stopped.

A Jailer reached forward.

"RUN!" Gavin yelled to his classmates, taking off.

They followed, sprinting as fast as they could to the gym. Behind them, they heard the heavier footsteps of the Jailers.

"PE BETTER PAY OFF!" Carl yelled, dodging the benches. The others didn't bother speaking.

Gale soon was ahead, skipping some steps of the stairs. They were so close to the second floor.

And there they were.

The Basketball Booth, Second Floor Gym.

Thirty students, all breathing heavily from the chase.

"Is it going to be like this everyday?" Brooke sighed, looking at everyone else to make sure they were there.

"Well..." Jared replied. "There's an opening everyday."

"Don't think so." Kotka said after drinking some water. "The upper year who told me said it was only on the first day."

"But we're still gonna be hunted everyday, every time." James groaned.

"As far as I know, the safe zones are the lines, the eating table, and some lounges." Andy said. He then tapped Lucas' shoulder. "You're gonna go to the Game Lounge, right?"

"Okay." Leanne called everyone's attention. "After we take this break, let's organize our booth and review the shifts."

"Basketball Booth!" John held up a sign. "Second Floor Gym!"

"ATTENTION, STUDENTS!" The speakers all around the school boomed. "ATTENDANCE REGISTRATION ENDS AT NINE-O-CLOCK! IF YOU HAVE NOT REGISTERED YET, PLEASE HEAD TO THE ATTENDANCE TENTS! THANK YOU!"

"Oh." Kara sighed.

"We're gonna have to run again!?" Ciel hugged his stuffed dog tighter.

"We still need to oversee the booth, and we can't have everyone jailed so..." Jeff said. "We can go by batches."

And so, apparently around half of the class went downstairs.

"So stay in the lines..." Jabari nodded, noting The Spider from within the building.

They ran out through the glass doors, onto the road, beside the grandstand, and reaching ride's line.

What a miracle.

"It's just there..." Ava looked to the white tent diagonally across from where they were.

The students took off—

"Huh!?" Kotka took her next steps away from the two Jailers, holding a blue belt, towards their group.

Then there was one on their left.

Then in front.

Then behind.

"What the hell?!" RD growled as the Jailers slowly led them somewhere.

Thank god it wasn't the Jail Booth.

It was the Spectator's Tent.

"The queen requested for a larger audience." The Jailer said.

"Wait." Andy looked at him. "We need to sign our attendance."

"No."

It escalated to negotiation.

"What's the show right now, though?" James said, looking a little baffled by everything that happened.

"Exemplar?" Kara read on her schedule. "What is that supposed to..."

"What can we do now?" Kim asked. "I saw some Jailers staying around the attendance, so that's hopeless!"

"The others still need us." Cheese Roll said.

"Escape again?" Denise whispered.

And so, another stampede of Memes students and Jailers appeared.

A/N
Oof this is only part one of day one : D

The school fair was one of my favorite parts of the year! And one of the most memorable, too!

Anyways, it's 1AM. I should sleep.
