Chapter 54
"Eliza? Where is she? What happened?"
"I don't know, John, I'm so sorry," she whispered. "She was acting her usual self already, she seemed like she was getting better and I-"
"Don't be sorry, Liza, it's not your fault," John reassured her. "It's Paine's fault obviously."
Angelica glared at him. "It's the...bullet's fault?"
"Either way, Peggy's life is at stake," Alexander said.
Maria frowned. "Way to make the mood, Alex."
"I'm just tryna tell the truth."
John paced back and forth the waiting room.
He thought, How many times have I done that? Why does this keep happening?
Because the author is lazy and can't think of a proper fricking plot. unu.
"James!" Alexander called out as he caught sight of his older brother at the other end of the corridor.
"Alexander! I heard you got your memo-"
"Yes, I also heard," he muttered. "You knew, didn't you?"
"Knew what?"
"You knew earlier that Peggy had a high chance of death," he chided. "Why didn't you tell us?"
"..."
"So?"
"She didn't want me to tell you," James whispered.
"I'm sorry, what?" Eliza asked, giving her best death glare to him. "James, her life could have been saved! She could have been moved into another room-"
"Eliza, please. I'm sorry. Although the bullet had been removed, it caused an infection. She's been diagnosed with sepsis ever since." he explained trying not to flinch. "Look, the antibiotics failed to work. I'm so sorry, the other doctors ran tests and the chance of survival was low and still is."
Eliza gave James the hardest slap she could ever do. Everyone was shocked, as that was normally what Angelica would do. Speaking of the older sister, she was staring at the wall motionless; the news was just unexpected.
"I'm sorry, I hope your cheek won't be sore soon," Eliza cried. "How long can she stay?"
John's mind was racing as fast as the bullet that hit Peggy. That was the only thing he could thing of.
"I blame everything that happened on the author," Maria stated. "since the very beginning."
"Agreed," Alexander nodded.
"As much as I hate to say it, you have a very short amount of time," James sighed. "so-"
"Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait-" Maria exclaimed.
"Maria, we don't have time to wait!" Eliza yelled.
"I only got 10% of what you said earlier," she continued not exactly knowing what's happening.
"Maria, she's going to die..."
"..."
"Would you like to come in?" He asked poLItelY after a moment of silence.
"Oh, yes I would like to," Maria frowned and charged towards the room.
"Mars, what's happening? Why is it so cold? Why are my arms suddenly pale? Mars, please! Am I going to die? Will I survive? Also, is it possible for me to eat a baguette?"
"Here's the baguette!" Lafayette screamed and threw a baguette to Peggy.
"Ouch."
Maria glared at him.
"Laf, can we remember the fact that she's going to die?" Hercules asked.
"Oui, it is a great time to remember that."
"So, I am going to die!" Peggy exclaimed. "Don't forget to check my will under my bed, aND pUt mY deSiRed ePiTAPh!"
Theodosia muttered, "She's taking it well..."
"Oh, and I'm gonna haunt y'all as a ghost!" She chirped eating the baguette.
"Very well."
"Thanks, Pegs," John finally spoke up.
"What did I do?" Said girl asked.
"Oh, a million things that Alexander didn't get to do." He chuckled getting a playful shove from Alex.
"One last time!" Peggy yelled. "Group picture!"
"Eh, no harm in that," Maria chuckled wiping some tears away before bringing out her phone. "Sm-"
"TaLK lEss sMiLe mOre!" Burr said.
"Just- smile peeps!" She giggled as everyone in the room crowded over.
Peggy laughed as she was literally having the time of her life. Everyone nearly forgot that Peggy was at death's reach after countless photos.
"Thanks, John, too!" She smiled hugging him. "Thank you, everyone, for sticking until the end of my line."
Until they heard the familiar beep of the flatline.
"Oh, god, please no," John mumbled. He tried shaking Peggy to see if she really was faking it, slapping her. He half-expected her to wake up and tell her it was a late April Fool's Day Prank. "Why now..?"
"What'd I miss!?" Jefferson suddenly came in the room, followed by Madison, breaking the horrible silence. He took notice of everyone's reaction and the dead corpse of Peggy.
"A lot, Thomas," Maria whispered.
"oh."
That was when Maria screamed.
"July 14, 2021, 6:57 PM," James stated. "I am...deeply sorry for your loss."
