Chapter 45

Alex was in what seemed like a room.
A very dark room, you couldn't see the end. The darkness and the space looked infinite.

"Where am I?" He asked. His voice seemed to echo around the room.

"Alexander."

The familiar yet sweet voice  made the hair at the back of his neck rise.

"Mother?"

He turned around quickly to see his beloved, and somehow alive, mother.

"Alexander..." She smiled.

"Mom!" He cried, running towards her and embracing her.

She didn't disappear.

"Mom..you're real, you're here!" He smiled, his eyes getting teary.

"Hello, Alex."

"Peter?" Alex looked at his left to see his cousin.

"I'm sorry for killing myself. I had to. I couldn't live in the world anymore.."

"I understand."

"Yes, we're here. I'm not so sure we're real, though." Rachel said.

"What do you mean? Aren't you real? Is this all in my mind? Where am I? Am I dead?!"

"Calm down, my child." She smiled weakly. "Tell me instead, I do not know where we are, but this could be mere imagination of your mind."

"Oh..."

"You could choose. You could go with us, or you could stay."

Alex stayed silent. He couldn't choose. Leaving John would be heartbreaking. But joining his mother could be great.

"I know it's hard for you, to leave the ones behind." Peter said. "But we respect your decision."

"Which is the right one..?" He mumbled.

"Ask me. Which is the right side of the coin? Neither. So any decision you make is neither right nor wrong."

"Your friends are waiting Alexander. In the world though, you have to pay to stay." Rachel sighed.

"What do you mean?"

"It's possible you could risk your life—"

"I'm going back." Alex said, determined. "I promise I would never leave John. No matter what happens to me, I just want to be with him."

"Atta boy," Peter chuckled.

"He's a nice one," Rachel smiled. "Now, go."

Alex nodded and walked onwards to the vast darkness.

The further he went, his head started to hurt. Until he couldn't go any further because of the unbearable pain.

And he fell to the floor.

Except this was all in his mind.

There was a maximum of 5 people allowed in Alex's room.
John, Eliza, Burr, Theodosia, and Lafayette were in there.

"It's been 2 months since he was in a coma, and he's not awake yet." John sighed, sipping his coffee.

"John, I'm sure he'll wake up." Eliza said. "We just have to wait for it."

"At least, I thought them something." Burr muttered to Theodosia. She giggled.

Their wedding had been moved for a few months, making it next month, as Alexander was under this condition.

"John, just get some sleep, please." Lafayette said.

"No..no, you guys could go, I'll wait." He mumbled, rubbing his eyes.

"Are you sure? You've been living on coffee...sorta like Alex." Theo said, worried.

"Don't get overdosed, though." Eliza warned him.

"Yes, yes, I'm fine," John yawned. "Now, go, I'll stay here for the night."

"Like you always do." Laf mumbled, and exited the room, followed by Eliza, Theodosia, and Burr.

John sadly smiled at Alex.
He's been staying at the hospital 24/7, unless to get food or snacks.

He sighed, "Alex, please wake up."
He took Alex's hand and squeezed it gently.

"Please."

He looked down to the floor, and watched his own tears fall, until he felt a slight pressure on his hand.

He looked up, smiling at Alexander.
He was stirring in his sleep.

"Alexander?" John smiled, as he saw Alex open his eyes.

"Where am I—?" Alex was cut off by John embracing him.

"I-I'm sorry," Alex started, once John let go. "Do..I know you?"

John's smiled turned into a frown.

This was the moment he dreaded.

"I..I'll get the nurse." He managed to say and escaped the room, leaving Alex confused in the room.

John closed the door and immediately broken into sobs.

"John? John? What's wrong? What's happening?" Peggy, who was actually at the waiting room, asked John.

"He's..he's alive. Can you call the nurse?"

"O-okay. Then why are you crying?"

"He can't remember anything." He muttered.

"So, we've ran a few blood tests, we couldn't do that when he was unconscious, and he doesn't have any sort of blood disease, but it's possible his brain was indeed damaged."

"Can he — he still recover?"

"Well, since it was a great fall.." The doctor paused. "It was very severe damage. The fresh memories have obviously been damaged, the old memories could disappear forever. It's possible. But, in a matter of time, let's say about a year, he could have some improvements.

"Okay.." John mumbled.

"I understand it's hard losing a loved one, even if they are, uh, are not dead, but I think he could recover. Try to show him to important places. Talk about his old memories and stuff. It could trigger for his brain to remember them."

"Thank you, ma'am." Eliza smiled weakly.

"Of course. Now, Mr. Hamilton is to stay here until we know he is stable and he could remember his motor skills. He could, but we just want to make sure he's fine. That's about 2 weeks."

"Thank you. Again."

"Yes, well, you lot should be going." She said.

"Yes, we'll visit soon." Lafayette said, dragging his friends outside.

"A year? A fucking year?!" John exclaimed.

"Yes — but he could recover —" Peggy started.

"I know. But a year for the smallest improvements. What have I done?" John mumbled, burying his face in his hands once in the car.

"It isn't your fault. It's the... crazy person who pushed Alex off." Theo said.

"That's true. And, when we catch him, we could put this to court and have charges, if you want." Burr said.

"Thank you, guys." John smiled.

"Like, who would push an innocent person off the fire escape?" Eliza sighed. "Peggy, watch the road. You didn't get your license for crashing."

"Yeah, yeah." Peggy mumbled.

John sighed and watched the view outside the window of the car.

He muttered, "I'm gonna kill him if it's the last thing I do."
