Family Dinner

~Amy

Before I even finished eating, my phone started vibrating, meaning I was being called. It was my mom. She rarely called since before I moved out, I told her I wanted to be a graphic designer while she wanted me to be a buisness woman like her. She also had a habit of forcing me to go on dates with people I didn't like. I mouthed to Mark that I was being called before I stepped outside. "You're coming home for Christmas." "Hello to you too mother." I replied sarcastically. "We invited the Petersons out and they have a very nice single young man who has a college degree. His name is Daniel." She ignored my comment. "Mom, I'm already dating someone." I rolled my eyes even though I knew she couldn't see me. "He's a YouTuber-" "Absolutely not!" Mom cut me off. "Mom-" "We already paid for your flight back home, see you in a few hours." She abruptly ended the call. I looked through the glass window, watching Mark talk with Jack and Signe, smiling widely. I couldn't break his heart by telling him I couldn't stay. I took a deep breath before walking back inside, forcing a smile on my face. "What'd I miss?" I sat down by Mark. "Just talking about boring YouTube stuff." Jack shrugged. "I gotta get going, see you guys later!" I plastered on a fake smile before walking towards the door. "What's the rush?" Mark gently grabbed my arm, his eyes shining with concern. "I-I just have to go." I swallowed hard, removing my arm from his grasp before leaving. I drove back to my hotel, packing everything I had back into my suitcase before driving to the airport, only just barely in time for the flight. Even though the flight was only a couple hours long, it seemed to drag on as I stared out the window, wishing I wasn't even on this plane. The only reason why I was was only because last time I refused to visit her, she came to me and made my life a living hell for a week, complaining about everything I did. I was brought back to reality when a voice announced that we were landing. I was the last one off of the plane, deciding that if I was forced to visit her, I might as well annoy her by being late. I climbed into a taxi, telling the driver the address. He seemed to sense my reluctance of going as he offered me an apologetic smile and a candy cane. I gratefully took it, giving him a good tip before staring at my house I hadn't seen in years. It looked exactly like it did the last time I saw it. Snow blanketed everything, making it hard to reach the door. I knocked on it, only having to wait a minute before my mom opened the door. "You're late." She deadpanned, opening the door wider go allow me inside. "Would it kill you just to say hi at least once?" I muttered under my breath as I sat down at the table. Dad was already there, his gaze sympathetic. He really supported me, unlike my mom who pretty much did the exact opposite. There was also two elderly women that I assumed were the Petersons, as well as a guy with shaggy brown hair and green eyes. "So Amy, how have you been?" Dad asked. "Pretty well, I'm trying to move to LA and I have a boyfriend." I glared in the guy's direction, hoping he'd get the hint that I certainly didn't want to be here. An awkward silence filled the room, the only sound being the scraping of forks on plates. I ate quickly in hopes that then I'd get to leave sooner. "Amy, would you like to go on a walk?" Daniel asked once he finished eating. I opened my mouth to say no, but caught the disproving glare from my mom in the corner of my eye. "Yeah!" I side with fake enthusiasm as I put my coat back on and walked out of the door with him. "Look, you're pretty and all, but I'm dating someone else." Daniel confessed once he closed the door. "O-okay." I stuttered, a bit taken aback by his bluntness. "You go ahead and go, I'll come up with an excuse." He smiled. "Thanks!" I nodded in appreciation, taking a taxi back to the airport. I was able to board a flight to LA as soon as I arrived. I only prayed I'd be back in time before Mark noticed my absence
